JAPAN: TOKYO: EARTHQUAKE FEARS
Japanese/Natsound
Tokyo has been hit by major earthquakes every 70 years for the last three centuries
The last one was in 1923 and seismologists believe another is now due.
The problem of how to prepare for such a disaster is one which confronts everyone living in the city.
A report issued this week by the Tokyo Defence Agency predicts that an estimated 67-thousand Tokyo residents will die if the city suffers a quake like the one which hit Kobe.
Many of those people would probably come from the old suburb of Tsukashima.
It's an area very much like the parts of Kobe which suffered most last Tuesday.
Densely populated homes are built on congested narrow streets and constructed with a high proportion of flammable materials.
Fires in Kobe were a major hazard in the aftermath of the quake with ruptured gas mains fuelling burning rubble.
The people of Tsukashima are now well aware of the dangers they face.

I have now bought an emergency backpack.
SUPER CAPTION: Tsukashima resident
The Museum of Earthquake Science in the northern Tokyo suburb of Kita-ku is supposed to help people prepare for the next earthquake.
Here, people can experience what it feels like to be in a furnished room as it is shaken by violent tremors.
These trucks do regular visits to schools and public places, but people have become used to them and they are no longer a novelty.
But following Kobe there is a greater feeling of urgency amongst the public about how to prepare themselves.
Parents are now bringing their children to the museum in the hope that they can prepare them for a terrifying experience. And hopefully give them a greater chance of survival.
Other displays tell visitors about the danger posed by fires and advise them how to tackle them.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
When a big earthquake happens I want my daughter to know where to meet with me, so I brought her to show the area near the station and this earthquake centre. This is our earthquake tour today.
SUPER CAPTION: Visitor to the Museum
Other displays, like smoke filled chambers, are intended to show visitors how to cope with the risks which follow earthquakes - such as smoke-filled rooms.
Families can thus experience the sort of dangers they will have to face and hopefully be more prepared if they do.
The museum is safe, but the streets of Tokyo may well be a very different experience in years to come.

Why there's a ring of natural disasters around the Pacific
The belt of volcanic activity is called the Ring of Fire.
Subscribe to our channel!
The Ring of Fire is a band of volcanoes and frequent earthquakes that runs from New Zealand, up through Eastern Asia, across the Bering Strait and all the way down to the Southern tip of Chile. Volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis appear around the boundaries of the several, fast moving, tectonic plates that make up the region. When the plates collide, they create areas of volatility.
The Ring of Fire sees more natural disasters than anywhere else on Earth, but what makes it particularly dangerous is that few countries are prepared.
To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy.

Let's Denken 〜 Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Historic Buildings・Fukushima, Yame 〜
The Japanese government has designated 110 places throughout the country as Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Historic Buildings. 5 of those districts are in Fukuoka Prefecture.
These districts are not confined to houses; they can be anything from townscapes and waterways. Any area that has value as a historical community can be under consideration.
In this video, we introduce one of Fukuoka Prefecture's preservation districts, Fukushima of Yame City.

Shigeru Ban: Emergency shelters made from paper
Long before sustainability became a buzzword, architect Shigeru Ban had begun his experiments with ecologically-sound building materials such as cardboard tubes and paper. His remarkable structures are often intended as temporary housing, designed to help the dispossessed in disaster-struck nations such as Haiti, Rwanda or Japan. Yet equally often the buildings remain a beloved part of the landscape long after they have served their intended purpose. (Filmed at TEDxTokyo.)

SUMMARY

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō, ; Japanese: [toːkʲoː] (listen)), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, has served as the Japanese capital since 1869. As of 2014 the Greater Tokyo Area ranked as the most populous metropolitan area in the world. The urban area houses the seat of the Emperor of Japan, of the Japanese government and of the National Diet. Tokyo forms part of the Kantō region on the southeastern side of Japan's main island, Honshu, and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo was formerly named Edo when Shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city as his headquarters in 1603. It became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from Kyoto in 1868; at that time Edo was renamed Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolis formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府, Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市, Tōkyō-shi).
Tokyo is often referred to as a city but is officially known and governed as a metropolitan prefecture, which differs from and combines elements of a city and a prefecture, a characteristic unique to Tokyo.
The 23 Special Wards of Tokyo were formerly Tokyo City. On July 1, 1943 it merged with Tokyo Prefecture and became Tokyo Metropolis with an additional 26 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture, and the Izu islands and Ogasawara islands south of Tokyo. The population of the special wards is over 9 million people, with the total population of Tokyo Metropolis exceeding 13.8 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area called the Greater Tokyo Area with over 38 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy. As of 2011 Tokyo hosted 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city in the world at that time. Tokyo ranked third (twice) in the International Financial Centres Development Index. The city is home to various television networks such as Fuji TV, Tokyo MX, TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, Nippon Television, NHK and the Tokyo Broadcasting System.
Tokyo ranks first in the Global Economic Power Index and third in the Global Cities Index. The GaWC's 2008 inventory classified Tokyo as an alpha+ world city – and as of 2014 TripAdvisor's World City Survey ranked Tokyo first in its Best overall experience category (the city also ranked first in the following categories: helpfulness of locals, nightlife, shopping, local public transportation and cleanliness of streets). As of 2015 Tokyo ranked as the 11th-most expensive city for expatriates, according to the Mercer consulting firm, and also the world's 11th-most expensive city according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's cost-of-living survey. In 2015, Tokyo was named the Most Liveable City in the world by the magazine Monocle. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world. Tokyo was ranked first out of all sixty cities in the 2017 Safe Cities Index. The QS Best Student Cities ranked Tokyo as the 3rd-best city in the world to be a university student in 2016 and 2nd in 2018.
Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics, the 1979 G-7 summit, the 1986 G-7 summit, and the 1993 G-7 summit, and will host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

In 2015, Tokyo was named the Most Liveable City in the world by the magazine Monocle. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world.
