Salvation Mountain- East Jesus - Slab City California
Salvation Mountain is a hillside visionary environment created by local resident Leonard Knight (1931–2014) in the California Desert area of Imperial County, north of Calipatria, northeast of Niland near Slab City, and several miles from the Salton Sea.
The artwork is made of adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint.[citation needed] [1] It encompasses numerous murals and areas painted with Christian sayings and Bible verses, though its philosophy was built around the Sinner's Prayer.[2]
The Folk Art Society of America declared it a folk art site worthy of preservation and protection[3] in the year 2000. In an address to the United States Congress on May 15, 2002, California Senator Barbara Boxer described it as a unique and visionary sculpture... a national treasure... profoundly strange and beautifully accessible, and worthy of the international acclaim it receives.[4]
In December 2011, the 80-year-old Knight was placed in a long-term care facility in El Cajon for dementia.[5] Leonard Knight died on February 10, 2014, in El Cajon.[6]
Concern has been raised for the future of the site, which requires constant maintenance due to the harsh surrounding environment. Many visitors bring paint to donate to the project, and a group of volunteers has been working to protect and maintain the site.[7][8][9] In 2012, a public charity, Salvation Mountain, Inc., was established to support the project.[10]

Salvation Mountain - Niland California
Leonard Knight was one of America's greatest folk artists. He spent thirty years building and painting Salvation Mountain in Slab City, California. He re-purposed bales of hay, millions of gallons of paint and adobe to build this place. The theme of love is everywhere. It's fifty feet high and one hundred and fifty feet wide. Today Ella and Ron take care of it and keep the desert from eroding it away. It's just south east of the Salton Sea in Southern California.
East Jesus is the Last Hippie Haven in America
There’s a dusty corner of the desert in California’s Imperial County that no soul has claimed for decades. Within that dusty corner is a tiny spot of land that bears some resemblance to a civilized community, and it is called East Jesus.
Located within Slab City, a barren patch of government-owned land taken over by RVs and squatters, East Jesus is an off-the-grid, hippie artist commune. It’s home to a rotating group of six to fifteen residents throughout the year, with up to a thousand visitors per week dropping by to look at the repurposed art.
The entire site is made of reclaimed, recycled and reused materials. Even its residents go through a process that involves the prefix “re-,” staying at East Jesus to essentially retreat from mainstream society and live life with minimal laws.
As solar companies eagerly buy desert lands, the future of the East Jesus compound is in the air, and its squatters have formed the Chasterus Foundation in an effort to purchase the land for the first time in its history. Playboy’s correspondent Yoonj Kim pays a visit and stays overnight at East Jesus, looking at the systems and the people that are working to keep it going.

The Last Free Place in America
In this two-part series, video journalist Katie Schoolov and reporter Angela Carone explore the threats facing a desolate desert area in California that some call The Last Free Place in America.
Part One: Slab City is like the Wild West. It’s remote - in the brutal Imperial Valley desert. There’s no mayor, no city council, no stoplights. People have lived there for decades. They are squatters on state-owned land. They call it the last free place in America. KPBS reporter Angela Carone says Slab City’s free spirit is being challenged, and it may change the place forever. KPBS video journalist Katie Schoolov was also in Slab City to produce this story.
Part Two: In the middle of the desert, a few hundred people live without electricity or running water in a squatter community called Slab City. Yesterday, we brought you a story of the land dispute threatening the Slabbers’ way of life. On the same far-flung patch of desert, a community of artists is fighting to keep their land - and their art. KPBS reporter Angela Carone and video journalist Katie Schoolov bring you the story of one evening in East Jesus.

Funniest Slab City Documentary. Pranking The Locals. Partied with Slab City Locals and really got a taste for what life is like on the Slabs. This is the funniest and possibl the best slab city documentary ever made.
Slab City or The Slabs is largely a snowbird community in the Sonoran Desert, located in Imperial County, California, 156 miles northeast of San Diego, in the California Badlands, and used by recreational vehicle owners and squatters from across North America.[1][2] It takes its name from the concrete slabs that remain from the abandoned World War II Marine Corps barracks of Camp Dunlap.
Several thousand campers, many of them retired, use the site during the winter months. The snowbirds stay only for the winter, before migrating north in the spring to cooler climates. The temperatures during the summer are unforgiving (as high as 120 °F) (48 °C); nonetheless, there is a group of around 150 permanent residents who live in the Slabs all year round. Some of these Slabbers derive their living from government programs and have been driven to the Slabs by poverty. Others have moved to The Slabs to learn how to live off the grid and to be left alone. Still others have moved there to stretch their retirement income.
The site is both decommissioned and uncontrolled, and there is no charge for parking. The site has no official electricity, running water, sewers, toilets, nor trash pickup service. Many residents use generators or solar panels to generate electricity. Supplies can be purchased in nearby Niland, California, located about four miles (6 km) to the southwest of Slab City.

Please contribute to our Land Purchase Fund, and protect East Jesus!
We have the opportunity to purchase the land East Jesus sits on. We must raise $90,000, or we risk having the land leased out from under us. Help us preserve and protect East Jesus with a tax-deductible gift.
Together, the inhabitants of East Jesus and offsite members provide a refuge for artists, musicians, survivalists, writers, scientists, laymen and other wandering geniuses.
We are dedicated to providing a working model of an improbable improvised community at the edge of the world.
We are most interested in low-tech solutions, unresolved theories, non-linear advancement, and creative reuse.
We strive to document the results of these endeavors, sometimes simply by their existence. Our documents are sometimes nails, concrete, and sweat.
We are partially an exhibition space for those problematic projects taking up your warehouse space, partially a build space for those problematic projects taking up the desert.
One of our guiding philosophies is “do as thou wilt”; another is “do no harm”.

A few months ago we went to visit the incredible abandoned city called Slab City. It used to be a military base but hundreds of squatters came and made it their home. We went with our friend Justin Escalona and truly had a fascinating experience. We thought the place would be hostile and dangerous when in fact it was inviting and beautiful (in it's own way). Shout-outs to all the description readers out there you know we love you :)

SALVATION MOUNTAIN CALIFORNIA - Letting Go.
Salvation Mountain in the desert of southern California, is an art installation near Niland created by Leonard Knight and painted with hundreds of bible verses using thousands of gallons of paint. Ever since I had seen this place in the movie Into the Wild I always dreamt of going there. It seems like a place my parents would have loved when they were alive, and so I traveled there to leave a symbol of my childhood and also my nomadic lifestyle there for them.
In this short teaser clip of a full video under development, I am testing some color correction done in Adobe Premiere for a nice warm tone, and I mixed in a sound clip from Alan Watts about life and death. Let me know your thoughts, and see more on LostBoyMemoirs.com

I forgot to mention that on 3/22/13 at 11:09pm as I lay in bed I had a vision of 3 independent missiles coming from the west of the United states towards the east. But I knew they were headed to our west coast. These missiles were in slow motion and VERY powerful.
