BEST VIDEO - Drive Down To East Portal (River Portal) 2015 - PILGRIMAGE
Every year we make an annual pilgrimage to East Portal -
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - Montrose County, Colorado. My GGrandfather was a driller on the Gunnison Diversion Tunnel which channeled water from the Gunnison River to help irrigate the Uncompaghre Valley making it able to sustain life and able to grow produce. The family came from County Down, Northern Ireland to Pueblo, Colorado and then here to what was then known as River Portal. The tiny town that used to be here was a company town - solely for the purpose of housing and providing the necessities for the workers on the tunnel. The grade of the road is now 16 or 17%. It's quite a ride!!! Wow!!! Back in the days of the tunnel building it was MUCH worse!!! The isolation and the difficulty of the labor caused many ppl to leave - average stay I believe was two weeks!!! My Irish family including my grandfather who was also born in County Down lived down here for a few years. They had 3 more children while living down here and lost one of them. I'm doing research on the families that lived here when the 1910 census was taken. It's my One Place Study for Genealogy. To me this is hallowed ground / sacred ground. I feel my Irish Mason ancestors when I'm here. I discovered the connection to this place the day that my grandson named Mason was born! I even got to see inside the tunnel that day! I hope it will always be a sacred place to the descendants of ALL the people who lived and worked at River Portal.
North America’s Hidden Treasure | Black Canyon
Do you have a favorite place on Earth? I think I found mine.
———————————————————————————————
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado is one of hidden treasures of the North America. This canyon is called Black because some parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day. The canyon is incredibly steep, it’s more than 2000 feet tall and it is probably one of the deepest and narrowest canyons I have ever seen in my life.

This canyon is deeper than the Royal Gorge and you can drive to the bottom. This is where we finally saw Karens Bear. I have a flight simulator video of me flying over this canyon from a few years back.

Colorado Road Trip - September 2011 - Black Canyon of the Gunnison
On the morning of September 20, 2011, we departed our hotel in Montrose and drove about 10 miles to the entrance of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, off US Highway 50. This video is taken on the East Portal Road, which drops over 2,000 feet in about 2 miles. Once all the way to the end of the road, where the dam is located, we turned around and made our way back up the 16% gradient road. Video taken with a VHoldr Contour GPS camera, on a windshield mount made by Delkin (fat gecko double knuckle model).

HWY 50 WEST of GUNNISON, CO - 9/26/13
The Long Way to Salt Lake City - 1787 mile, 6 day, Solo Motorcycle Trip
A fun, 6 day, 1787 mile solo motorcycle ride taking a roundabout way from Denver to SLC. This video is a compilation of the video I shot on the ride over those 6 days.
The video is playable up to 1080P and was recorded/edited at that resolution.
Highlights of the trip:
Ride down the east portal road @ the Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Ride to Canyonlands - Islands in the Sky National Park
Ride up the Moki Dugway
Visit the Hite Marina (former)
Antelope Island near SLC
It was a very fun trip and rivaled some of my other long 1500+ mile rides. Those other rides are from 2011 and 2012:
- 2012 - 2063 mile trip to Jerome, AZ
and
- 2011 a 1600 mile trip around colorado
This video took about 2 weeks to put together in my spare time using Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, and a handful of other tools.
All the video was shot with 2 GoPro Hero 2s @ 1080P.
I hope you enjoy my little trip around Colorado and Utah!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
This spectacular park features a deep canyon carved by the swift waters of the Gunnison river. The river has a sharp incline (95 feet per mile), so it had the power to carve through ancient, very hard stone which rose in its path from tectonic upheaval.
For photographers and other visitors, the park offers a number of overlooks which are easily accessed by a series of rim roads.. For contrast, the steep, winding West Portal Road allows drivers to go down to the river's level below the eastern limits of the cliffs.
