Auguste Perret, architecte expert du béton armé, contribua largement à la reconstruction de la ville du Havre après sa destruction durant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. L'église Saint Joseph, achevée en 1956, est son plus grand chef-d'oeuvre et devint rapidement un symbole de la ville reconstruite. Nous visitons cet incroyable monument et découvrons son architecture étonnante et colorée, jusqu'à atteindre le clocher à son sommet : comme un phare, c'est la première chose que l'on voit depuis la mer.

St. Joseph's Church, Le Havre is a Roman Catholic church in Le Havre, France. It was built between 1951 and 1957/58 as part of the reconstruction of the town of Le Havre, which was entirely destroyed by the British during World War II. It acts as a memorial to the five thousand civilians who died in the conflict.
The church was designed by the chief architect for the reconstruction of Le Havre, Auguste Perret, teacher and mentor to the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. The sombre interior is in the Neo-Gothic style. The tower is 107 metres tall and acts as a beacon visible from out at sea, especially at night when illuminated. This is the must visit of the reconstructed city. This masterpiece by Auguste Perret will surprise you. Take the trouble to enter, you will discover a majestic modern church.
With 6500 stained glass windows and concrete walls, St. Joseph's Church is a lighthouse in the heart of the city. It was erected in memory of the victims of the bombings of the Second World War.
Visible more than 60 km offshore in good weather thanks to its 107 meters high, the octagonal lantern tower is a body with its square base that combines nave and choir. This masterpiece of 20th century architecture will take your breath away with its incredible beauty.

L'église Saint-Joseph, un phare dans la ville du Havre
Emblème du Havre d’après-guerre reconstruit sous la direction de l’architecte Auguste Perret, l’Eglise Saint-Joseph trône, tel un phare dans la ville. Impossible de la rater. Et pourtant, Sophie, Havraise, a attendu 40 ans avant de pénétrer dans ses entrailles. Le jour où elle se décide enfin à pousser les portes de ce monument, elle est tout simplement éblouie ! Cet édifice conçu en 1951 par Auguste Perret s’articule autour de quatre pylônes en béton et accueille 6 500 vitraux réalisés par l’artiste vitrailliste Marguerite Huré ! Avec sa lanterne octogonale de 107 mètres de haut, la beauté du lieu est subjuguante. Au centre, l’autel est entouré de sièges et strapontins qui peuvent transformer l’Eglise en un véritable théâtre. Dans le monde de l’architecture et de l’art, l’Eglise Saint-Joseph est une référence.

Le Havre is a city in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northwestern France. It is situated on the right bank of the estuary of the river Seine on the Channel southwest of the Pays de Caux.
Le Havre is the most populous commune of Upper Normandy. Its port is the second largest in France, after that of Marseille, for total traffic, and the largest French container port. The name Le Havre means the harbour or the port.
Le Havre started growing and the port took off first with the slave trade then other international trade. After the 1944 bombings the firm of Auguste Perret began to rebuild the city in concrete. The oil, chemical, and automotive industries were dynamic during the Trente Glorieuses (postwar boom) but the 1970s marked the end of the golden age of ocean liners.
In 2005 UNESCO inscribed the central city of Le Havre as a World Heritage Site. The André Malraux Modern Art Museum is the second of France for the number of impressionist paintings
