Walking Tour | Egyptian Bazaar | Spice Bazaar | Mısır Çarşısı | İstanbul | Turkey | 15 March 2019
hiking route is below
Location
Egyptian Bazaar is located in Sirkeci
Opening Hours
The Egyptian or Spice Bazaar (Turkish 'Mısır Çarşısı') opens daily between 09:00-19:00, Sundays from 10:00-18:00 and closes on public and religious
A natural pharmacy
Formerly, the Spice Bazaar functioned as a ‘natural pharmacy’. Recipes for medicines made from mixtures of various herbs were often hung outside of shops, so that customers could request these herbs if they so desired. This tradition still continues today. Many of the shops in the bazaar sell a large number of different spices and herbs that are known to be effective against many different ailments.
Although there are an endless number of shopping centers and supermarkets in Istanbul, shopping at the Spice Bazaar remains a popular, pleasant tradition for the city’s residents. After making a number of purchases in the bazaar itself, one can leave through the Tahtakale exit and complete one’s shopping at the shops in the adjacent open-air market.
Also, if you do go to the Spice Market, don’t forget to buy Turkish coffee from Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi (Mehmet Efendi Coffee Roasters), who produces the traditional Turkish brand of coffee. They are located just outside of the bazaar’s Tahtakale exit.
It is believed an older bazaar called “Makron Envalos” was previously sited there and its L-shape structure can be found on the west side of the New Mosque (Yeni Cami).
One year after the New Mosque was built the bazaar section of the complex was added by Mustafa Aga, the Head Architect of the Ottoman Palace and named the Egyptian Bazaar because it was built using tax money collected from Cairo in Egypt.
It is not only spices that have been sold here; all kinds of medicines and drugs were traded and many of which were prepared from recipes out of the book “Nüzhet-ül Fi Tercüme-Afiyet” (A Good Appetite).
Design of the Eygptian Bazaar
There are six doors leading into the bazaar and the section at Haseki Gate has a double-storied structured design where the upper floor was used as a Court Hall to hear the cases between people and tradesmen. The intersection of the short and long branches of the bazaar, designed and made from wood, is called the “Prayer Field” (Dua Meydani) and it is the most notable part of the bazaar.
In here the “Adhan Kiosk” is found and when the bazaar opens the officer in charge of the prayer wishes the bazaar’s tradesmen high earnings.
Spice Market Today
The bazaar today has over 85 shops selling items such as jewellery, herbs and spices, gifts and souvenirs, dried fruits and nuts, teas, oils and essences and sweets.
There is a flower and plant market on one side and a food market on the other and its ceiling, higher than the Grand Bazaar, is covered in domes. The original bazaar suffered two major fires one in 1691 and the other in 1940 and from when the Municipality of Istanbul carried out full restoration and is what you see today.

The Grand Bazaar (Turkish: Kapalıçarşı, meaning ‘Covered Bazaar’; also Büyük Çarşı, meaning ‘Grand Bazaar’) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. In 2014, it is listed No.1 among world's most-visited tourist attractions with 91,250,000 annual visitors.
The Grand Bazaar is located inside the walled city of Istanbul, in the district of Fatih and in the neighbourhood (mahalle) bearing the same name (Kapalıçarşı). It stretches roughly from west to east between the mosques of Beyazit and of Nuruosmaniye. The Bazaar can easily be reached from Sultanahmet and Sirkeci by trams (Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı stop).

About Akide Candy (Traditional Hard Candy)
Akide candy and Turkish delight are two of the most important culinary heritages of Turkey. Akide candy was invented in 16th century at a time when sugar was very expensive and more valuable than honey. The word “akide” comes from Arabic and means “faith and loyalty.” In Syrian Arabic dialect, it means “thickening, making a knot.” Therefore the candy that is made by boiling honey or sugar took on the name “akide.”
Later on, akide’s alternative meanings; faith and loyalty were picked up and akide candy took on a symbolic meaning. The janissary army would go to the place every 3 months to receive their salary, which was held in a ceremonial manner. The highest ranking janissary officers would offer this candy to the Grand Vizier and other dignitaries to symbolize their loyalty to the state and the sultan. It also became a tradition to offer akide candy to the members of the Imperial Council after the morning prayers every Tuesday, and akide candy became an important part of every type of social and religious celebrations as well as weddings and circumcision ceremonies.
The ingredients of akide candy are quite simple, yet making it requires a certain amount of expertise. Sugar with some water is heated up to about 175-180C (350F). Sugar has to be melted completely and come to an almost caramel consistency and poured on a marble counter. Marble is crucial in this process as the natural cooling effects will help with the cooling of the melted sugar and bring it to the right consistency to make the candy. At this stage the aromatics (e.g. mastic, mint, lemon, rose petals, pistachio, cinnamon, clove etc.) are added to the sugar and the kneading process starts that helps to bring down the temperature of the sugar, makes it pliable and incorporates the aromatics. When the cooling sugar comes to about 70C (160F) the shaping of the candy starts. Timing is very crucial in this process as the sugar hardens as it cools, so help from a heat lamp or a table with bottom heat is needed. The end product is the colorful little hard candies that are like little gems.
One of the most important discoveries of Turkish confectionery, akide candy is a cultural symbol of “eating sweet and talking sweet” (a famous Turkish saying).

SPICE BAZAAR TOUR in ISTANBUL 2019 | MISIR ÇARŞISI
The Spice Bazaar or also called Egyptian Bazaar is a popular tourist attraction in Istanbul. So it is recommended to visit this place. It's as must visit place in Istanbul for tourists. One of many other places to visit in Istanbul. You can reach the Spice Bazaar by the Bagcilar-Kabatas tram (T1 line) very easy. This covered marked was built 1660 during the Ottoman Period. It is called Egyptian Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) because it was built with the revenues from the Ottoman province (eyalet) of Egypt. The bazaar was is the center for spice trade in Istanbul, but in the last years, because of tourism, shops of other type are replacing the spice shops. Visitors and tourists can buy the famous sweets, Turkish Delight LOKUM, caviar, dried herbs, tea, Turkish Coffee, honey, nuts, dried fruits, jewellery, souvenirs and different kind of Spices BAHARAT.
I went to the Spice Market on early time. It was about 8:00 o'clock in the morning. The shop owners and workers were opening and preparing the Shops for the visitors. Few minutes later the first tourist group arrived in the Bazaar and than it became crowded slowly. Now walk with me in the Spice Bazaar of Istanbul and enjoy a great shopping experience in a Turkish Bazaar.

ISTANBUL: GRAND BAZAR | EGYPTIAN SPICE BAZAR
This video is based on my visit to Grand Bazar, Istanbul. Watch this to know interesting facts about the Grand Bazaar, which once upon a time had to be the world's largest mall. Thereafter I visited Spice bazar or called Egyptian bazar. Both the markets are quite big and are popular tourist attractions in Istanbul. So I was recommended these places as the must-visit place for a tourist in Istanbul, besides Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. I met a lot of interesting people on the way. Thereafter I went to Eminonu to catch the ferry to Uskudar. I have shared the process of getting on to the ferry and the free fare to Uskudar. The beginning of the video you will see me visiting a Tourist Information centre in Sultan Ahmet, which I always recommend. The gentleman in the centre helped me to plan the itinerary for Turkey trip.
