Elephant's Head point, Mahabaleshwar Overview :
Elephant's Point is famous for the beauty and peace that one gets by being there. The greenery around is worth appreciating, and nature around is stunning and gives one a sense of comfort away from the fast moving life of the city. The rock formations at the site are present in a way that forms the trunk of an elephant. It is one of the most visited and famous attractions of Mahabaleshwar which is flocked in by tourists from near and far.
Elephant Point got its name from the age prevalent during the British Raj and the Governor of Bombay at the time, Sir Mount Elphinstone. It is believed that it was founded in the year 1930 by Dr Murray who also has an old mansion present nearby.
Today, only the ruins of this hotel are present in the place of which a picnic shed for the tourists is being constructed by the local authorities. The elephant's point justifies its name and give one a picture of an elephant's head and trunk. One must surely not miss out on the place.

People visiting the place can get a panoramic view of the humongous fort of Pratapgarh surrounded by Kova Valley on one side and Savitri Valley on the other side. One can also get hold of the view of Sahyadri range from the elephant's point. One can also get hold of the sandy patches which counteract the greenery surrounding Mahabaleshwar perfectly. One can easily spend a lovely picnic with family or friends amidst the scenery and experience the sunrise and sunset at the place.

Mahabaleshwar is located at 17.9237°N 73.6586°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 1,353 metres (4,439 ft).
Located about 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Pune and 285 km (177 mi) from Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar is a vast plateau measuring 150 km2 (58 sq mi), bound by valleys on all sides. It reaches a height of 1,439 m (4,721 ft) at its highest peak above sea level, known as Wilson/Sunrise Point.
Mahabaleshwar comprises three villages: sumit dave Malcolm Peth, Old Kshetra Mahabaleshwar and part of the Shindola village.
Mahabaleshwar is the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar. Legend has it that Krishna is Lord Vishnu himself as a result of a curse on the trimurtis by Savitri. Also, its tributaries Venna and Koyna are said to be Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma themselves. An interesting thing to notice is that 4 other rivers come out from the cow's mouth apart from Krishna and they all travel some distance before merging into Krishna. These rivers are the Koyna, Venna (Veni), Savitri, and Gayatri.
Climate of the area is suitable for cultivation of strawberries, Mahabaleshwar strawberry contributes to about 85 percent of the total strawberry production in the country. It also received the geographical indication (GI) tag in 2010.

At a distance of 7 km from Mahabaleshwar Bus Stand, Kate's Point and Elephant's Head Point are the most picturesque viewpoints of Mahabaleshwar in Satara district of Maharashtra. It is among the best tourist places in Mahabaleshwar.
Kate's Point area has 3 points in total; they are Kate's Point, Echo Point and Needle Hole Point or Elephant's Head Point. Kate's Point is named after the then British governor Sir John Malcolm's daughter. The original name of the point is Nake Khind and is situated at an altitude of 1290 m. Dhom dam as well as peaks of Kamalgadh, Pandavgadh and Mandardeo can be seen from Kate's Point.
Elephant's Head Point or Needle Hole Point is another popular vantage point in Mahabaleshwar, situated next to the Kate's Point. The overhanging cliffs of this point are similar to the head of an elephant and its trunk. Thus the point got its name as the Elephant's Head Point. One can see a natural rock formation with a hole in between, thus giving the name Needle Hole. Kate's Point and Needle Hole Point are often confused with Elephant Head Point which is near Lodwick Point. From this point, tourist can also get a view of the Sahyadri mountain range.

Elephant’s Head Point, also known as Needle’s Point, lies at the extreme end of the mountain range beyond Lodwick Point. Resembling to the elephant’s head, this extended ridge is the most popular tourist spot in Mahabaleshwar that offers the stunning views of the Sahyadri mountain range. Set amidst nature’s extremity, the place gets completely covered with greenery during monsoon, that attracts the nature lovers to visit and appreciate the serene nature bestowing immense charm.
WHAT TO DO AND SEE :
Along with Elephant’s Head Point, one can visit Dhom Dam, Sydney Point, Parsi Point, Kate’s Point, Table Land, Mapro Garden, Cheese Factory, Velocity Entertainmentz, Menwali Ghat, lying within the distance of not more than 10 km.
GETTING HERE :
Distance from Mahabaleshwar bus station is 7 km. Tourists can take local transport like bus or auto-rickshaw to reach its main gate, from where a pony ride will finally drop them to the point.
