It's the penultimate week of Dan's Epic Wine Route, and the wine of the Cape Epic route. With SAA having mislaid the original wine, Ellerman House star sommelier Manuel Cabello supplied four replacements from Wines of Elgin, and so here's this week's selection: Elgin Ridge Wines Chaos white, Richard Hilton Vineyards Emperor Probus viognier, Spioenkop Wines reisling, and Richard Kershaw's chardonnay.

Many might not know this, but South Africa has been producing wine since 1659. Vines were originally planted to produce fruit and wine to give to the sailors passing by on the Spice Route, to ward off scurvy.
In the 1990s, when Apartheid ended, the world's export market opened and South African Wines began to experience a renaissance and many producers quickly adopted new winemaking technologies.
I believe the great quality of our wine also has something to do with our weather. The Western Cape is known for its bright and hot summers, and mildly cold winters. Coupled with the sea climate surrounding the Western Cape, it makes for a great recipe to produce outstanding wines.
Today, I’m reviewing a delicious South African Pinot Noir made by Paul Cluver Wine Estate situated in the cool-climate South African Wine Region of Elgin in the Western Cape. Get yours here: and here:
This Pinot Noir has a lovely luminosity – the colour is bright plum skin. The nose has earthy almond aromas combined with cranberry, pomegranate and raspberries. On the palate these characteristics follow through combining with interesting seaweed, umami savory flavours.
This easy-drinking Pinot Noir pairs well with a diversity of dishes. Game fish, game birds, and venison works very well, as does grilled beef and strong, hard cheese. Sushi would also pair beautifully with this wine!
Don’t be fooled by the screw top. It does not at all devalue the wine or make it go off quicker.

Elgin Vintners - A view from the Top!
In the heart of the Elgin Valley, nestled between vineyard rows, orchards of apples and pears with an amphitheatre of the Kogelberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges, lies the brand home of Elgin Vintners on the Elgin Orchards farm which dates back to 1890.
Wrapped by orchards, vineyards and sloping pasture, this wonderful historic homestead has been renovated into a Victorian-style home and still boasts with its original oak and hickory floorboards. The Ridgelands Manor House was known to be a nursing station for wounded soldiers returning home after world war two ensuring their recovery after defending their country. With library shelves safekeeping a private collection of old Elgin Vintners vintages guests can sip on the award-wining current releases, either on the sandstone terrace or relaxing under the cool shade of the ancient oak trees with views of the surrounding mountain ranges and vineyards of the region.
