South Africa Vlog #4 - Cheetah Project @ Emdoneni Lodge
On our way back from Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve to Umdloti, in the north of Durban, we stopped at the Emdoneni Lodge to visit the Cheetah Project. Being huge cats lovers we were really looking forward to be so close to these beautiful animals.
This special project is about caring for Cheetahs, Serval Cats, African Wildcats and Caracal (Lynx), which have been orphaned or injured in the wild and are in need of care and rehabilitation.

Emdoneni wild cat project
Wild cats in Africa are losing their habitat at an alarming rate, this project found in Zululand South Africa, is doing some great work helping Cheetahs, Servals, African Wildcats, and Caracals, as they adapt and survive in an ever shrinking world.
Emdoneni Lodge
Emdoneni is situated on the Elephant Coast in Zululand South Africa. This unique game lodge is a little piece of African magic, combining an animal rehabilitation centre with a family friendly game lodge and situated close to the oldest game reserve in Africa Hluhluwe/Imfolozi. Also within easy distance one can find the world heritage site of Isimangaliso (AKA St.Lucia). Being surrounded by such a wide variety of wildlife and Zulu culture plus the unique insight the animal rehabilitation centre offers makes Emdoneni a must see destination on any visit to South Africa. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast or just someone wanting to do their one time African safari this place is for you.
Emdoneni Cheetah Escape
This is the video that I shot of the Cheetah escape. Some facts surrounding the situation in no particular order:
- The park guide was extremely professional and quick thinking. He saw one cheetah escape, and immediately reacted to distract the second one so that it wouldn't also become a problem. Most of all, he maintained calm and control of the group of guests by issuing clear instructions.
- There were 4 children in the group, and 8 adults. The children got frightened and started crying. The adults were dumb-founded and did not know what to do so we stood about and gawked :)
- This incident happened at about 5:30pm local South Africa time, 30th June 2012.
- This enclosure houses a pair of male cheetahs. Both are about 7 to 8 months old, bred and brought up in captivity, so they are domestically inclined, but still new to Emdoneni.
- They are recent transfers from a Cape Town conservation project. They were transferred to Emdoneni in order to introduce new breeding stock for the conservation project, they could not stay in Cape Town because that would have introduced inbreeding. Each Cheetah costs R120,000.

Emdoneni Wild Cat Project
The Emdoneni wild cat project is situated in Zululand on the Elephant Coast of South Africa.
The project aims to rehabilitate and act as a breeding centre for several species of wild cats, including Cheetah, Caracal, Serval , and African Wild Cat.
Cheetahs, due to a very small gene pool have been under threat for quite sometime in Africa, and without projects like this one it is doubtful they would survive as a species.
The project also takes in injured or abandoned wild cats and rehabilitates them and where possible returns them to the wild.
As an educational project where one is able to interact with some of Africa's incredible cats Emodneni is a must see destination on any visit to South Africa.

This is Lio's account of the incident -
I'm writing to inform you about a cheetah attack that occurred on 14 March at Emdoneni Safari Park, the very day before the 14-year-old boy's incident.
On Tuesday, I was attacked by a cheetah named Dew, probably the same cheetah that attacked the boy*.
Our group of about five people, along with another group of 10 people, went into the enclosure and was told that we were allowed to pet two cheetahs, as well as take pictures. We were all standing together as a group. Suddenly, one of the cheetah approached me, jumped on me and pulled me down on the ground, attempting to bite me.
After the attack, I had scratches all over my body - my back, shoulder and arm.
I asked a couple of the employees from Emdoneni Safari Park if I needed to go to see doctor and get injection, but they said I don't need to because the cheetah has had a rabies injection before.
Even although it was not a very serious injury, I'm very concerned about that would happen in future - after the 14-year-old boy and I was attacked.
*Traveller24 can confirm that the same cheetah, Dew, also attacked Isaac Driver on 15 March.

Tembe Elephant Park - The Local Tembe Singing Group
This is an after school singing group that is focused on preventing teens from joining gangs and getting involved in crime. They perform at events like our stay at the Tembe Elephant Park to also promote the local culture. Some of the songs were very funny and include interpretative dancing. One involved chopping a rival suitors head off because he was pursuing the singer's girl...the interpretive dance was the funny part on that one...
