Dominica Crossing Flyover.m4v
Welcome to Dominica Crossing, a remote and rugged island trail race.
The Caribs, who settled here in the 14th century, called the island Waitikubuli, which means 'Tall is her Body.'
Dominica (DOM-in-EEK-a):
This small volcanic island has many names but they all point to a place of unmatched charm, incredible beauty and dramatic terrain features that has been left preserved and unspoiled in its quiet corner of the Caribbean. With several peaks over 4,000ft, it also boasts one of only two World Heritage Sites in the Eastern Caribbean - Dominica's Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Starting at sea level the trail goes right through the heart of the park and climbs up the island's highest peak, Morne Diablotins, 1447 metres (4747 ft).
The Waitikubuli Trail is just now complete and completely traverses the rugged Caribbean island of Dominica. The local Carib people are looking forward to welcoming international runners with open arms and lively spirits. They are excited to showcase the trail and all that the island has to offer visitors at Dominicas first 100k ultra run and 100 mile trek.
We have been granted special permission by the Ministry of Agriculture and and Forestry (MOAF) to stage an international Trail Race in late 2011.
Dominica is usually classified as one of the Windward Islands and is located between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. It marks the midpoint of the Lesser Antilles.
The island has an area of 754 sq km (291 sq mi) and is 47 km (29 mi) long by 26 km (16 mi) wide, with a coastline of 148 km (92 mi).

Bits & pieces from our visit to the EMERALD POOL in Dominica (Bumpiing Tours - December 27, 2011)
DOMINICA = called the NATURE ISLAND
Tour guide Gary (of Bumpiing Tours) drove us 1 hour from Dominica's capital Roseau, in an AC van, to our first stop - the EMERALD POOL (it was raining at times but we enjoyed very much the rainforest, the cold & clear water at the Pool and the beautiful Waterfall).
After our visit to the Pool and Waterfall, we listened to live jazz music (performed inside the Visitor Center by a talented young man).
- This wonderful grotto is a short walk into the rainforest in the centre of the island (on the road to Castle Bruce). The easy walk to the Emerald Pool (actually a waterfall-fed pool that appears bright green in the tree-filtered sunlight) is a loop trail of less than 1 mile that takes about 15-20 minutes to complete (it's considered the most accessible spot in the entire Morne Trois Pitons National Park).
- If you're taking your swimming gear be warned - it's a little cold in the pool & rocks can be slippery behind the Waterfall !
Boiling Lake - Jungle Bay Resort & Spa, Dominica
The Boiling Lake is Dominica's most famous excursion. The Lake is inside the Morne Trois Piton National Park which is UNESCO Word Hertiage Site. Features on this challenging six hour rainforest hike include several classifications of tropical rainforest, the geologically active Valley of Desolation, hot mineral springs and scenic vistas. The highlight of this hike is the second largest boiling lake in the world!
100 Things to Do in Dominica

Dominica is known as one of the top five-dive underwater photography destinations in the world

Fresh Water Lake Dominica
The Freshwater Lake
2.5 miles from the village of Laudat high in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, this lake is the source of the Roseau River and forms the basis for Dominica's hydro-electric scheme.
The Lake was originally of volcanic origin but construction of a dam some years ago as part of the hydo-electric scheme increased the size of the lake.
It is said to be bottomless although it is actually only 55ft deep... If you visit on a grey, misty day when wind-swept vapours swirl across its dragon-green surface, you will forgive the story-tellers for creating their far-fetched legends.
The Lake is reached on a new 2.5 mile road from the main Laudat-Roseau road just before you enter the village.
2005 saw the introduction of kayaking and boat tours on the Lake.
Besides the Lake itself, there is a good hour-long trail around the lake.
You can also continue on the road to the Boeri Lake.
Dominica: The Rainforest Island
It rains in the rain forest. Rain kills cameras. Who didn't know that? But, Peter, our guide, did make a forty foot high dive into the falls, so I guess it all balances in the end.

The peak and its surrounding habitat was and likely still is important nesting habitat for this rare seabird species. EPIC has carried out surveys for the bird a number of times over the past ten years and is looking forward to its next trip in the near future.

Geographically, Dominica is distinctive in many ways. The country has one of the most rugged landscapes in the Caribbean, covered by a largely unexploited, multi-layered rain forest. It is also among the Earth's most rain-drenched lands, and the water runoff forms cascading rivers and natural pools. The island, home to rare species of wildlife, is considered by many as a beautiful, unspoiled tropical preserve. According to a popular West Indian belief, Dominica is the only New World territory that Columbus would still recognize.
