DINNER WITH AN APPRENTICE GEISHA! |Kyoto, Japan Vlog|
My family came to visit and we saw all the sites! We visited Himeji Castle, Koko-En Gardens, and had dinner with an apprentice Geisha, or Maiko. I also got to ride the bullet train. It was an awesome experience.
And yes, I spelled Maiko incorrectly at one point in the video *face palm*

ENCHANTED TIME WITH MAIKO:

How to Play with Maiko and Geisha Experience Playing Japanese Games “Tora-Tora” in Kyoto !

≪Tora-tora≫
Tora-tora is a Japanese version of rock-paper-scissors.
Rock: samurai (Watonai)
Paper: old woman (Watonai’s mother)
Scissors: Tiger
The Samurai can kill the tiger with his spear, so he wins to the tiger, but he loses to his mother (the old woman) since she gave birth to him. Therefore, the old woman can win to the Samurai, but loses to the tiger since she’s old and frail. As such, the tiger loses to the Samurai, but wins to the old woman.
When playing Tora-tora, two players stand next to each other with a folding screen in between. They sing a song and at the chorus, “tora, tora, tora, tora (tiger, tiger, tiger, tiger)”, they hide behind the screen and pretend to be either the Samurai, the old woman, or the tiger, then they come out from behind the screen to reveal their hand.
To reveal their hand, there are specific gestures for each of the three characters:
The Samurai (Watonai) pretends to hold a spear in his hand to kill the tiger, the Samurai’s mother pretends to walk with a cane, and the tiger is on all fours.
<Lyrics & Dance>
In a large bamboo grove
(Gesture: push through a bamboo grove)
(Minasan-nozoite-goroujimase)
Believe me and take a look
(Gesture: make a pair of glasses with your hands and look at the other player from across the folding screen)
(Kin-no-hachimaki, Tasuki)
with a golden headband and rolled up sleeves,
(Gesture: pretend to wrap a headband and to roll your sleeves)
(Watonai-ga-enyarayato-toraeshi-kemono)
the Samurai is trying to catch a…
(Gesture: Thrust a spear toward the tiger)
tiger, tiger, tiger, tiger
(Gesture: pretend to be one of the 3 characters and appear from behind the screen. Depending on your gesture, you will win or lose. In case of a draw (as in this video), repeat A until either player wins.)

What is a Maiko/Geisha?
Maiko and Geisha are people who spend all their energy on cultivating their beauty and skills in Japanese traditional performing arts. They dedicate their entire youth to become a full-fledged geiko (mature geisha). They have continued to inherit their custom well over for 300 years. They undergo rigorous training, from learning the ‘hanamachi kotoba’ (a language specially used by people living in flower towns), to practicing their posture, their way of carriage, dancing, singing, and playing musical instruments. They have a deep self-awareness of being Japanese, and embody the essence of Japanese culture in today’s modern society.
