Hiking the Enchantments - Washington State
This video was made during an untypical snow free period in October, hiking from Colchuck Lake over 7,800 foot Aasgard Pass. The Enchantments are a very special region, high up in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Leavenworth Washington. Some say this astonishingly beautiful place has magical powers that will cast a spell on all those with open hearts. There are dozens of absolutely beautiful alpine lakes surrounded by stunning jagged mountain peaks in all directions.
It is difficult to get there, but well worth the effort.
Here you can find out more about the special permit you might need to camp in this area

The Beautiful Colchuck Lake Hike, Leavenworth, Washington, PNW, USA
The Colchuck Lake hike is undoubtedly one of the PNW's best and is VFC's favorite, aside from what sits beyond the lakes in the Enchantments.
Sitting at the gateway to the Enchantments, as the slopes of Asgard Pass dive down into the glacial green waters of this beautiful lake. Surrounded by multiple mountain peaks and attainable only by a respectable hiking climb, this mountain paradise is a must-see if you are in the area of Washington's Bavarian town of Leavenworth. Even if you are not, it's certainly worth the drive from anywhere in the state.
It is certainly one of the more crowded in Washington State, especially when you decide to go on a Saturday in the summer, but part of the hiking experience in the PNW is exchanging pleasantries and exchanging small conversation with others who share a love for the outdoors as you do, by making these journeys.
The West Cascades were covered in rain and clouds on this day, so VFC hit the road and drove the 3+ hours to the heavenly sunshine and fresh waters of Colchuck. It was very worth it, needless to say.
The water was cold, the sun was sweet, and VFC was in heaven.
Ah yeah.

Leavenworth Washington - Hikes, Lakes, and Bavarian Town
Taking in the Bavarian town of Leavenworth, Washington and the surrounding region. We hiked to Colchuck Lake as well as The Pinnacles and Lake Chelan.
Leavenworth is a Bavarian Town located in Washington State. The town was a hotspot for logging in the late 1800's, however due to many avalanches and destruction to train tracks over time, the industry moved to other areas of the state. Leavenworth re-branded the town and focussed on tourism, becoming a Bavarian-themed town in the USA.
The town is located in the centre of snow-peaked mountains and alpine lakes. It also has many wineries as it is in a warm valley near Wenatchee. There are many mountain hikes to beautiful lakes in the region. The Enchantments trail boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States and has multiple green and light blue lakes. We only got to see Colchuck Lake due to the time of year, however the Enchantments is doable in a day.
Lake Chelan is located about an hour outside of Leavenworth and is a great spot to enjoy a summer day and picnic. Drive up above the lake for a stunning view of the valley and lakes below like we did!
The Pinnacles are rock formations about 15 minutes outside of the town of Leavenworth and are a great spot to view the wineries of Leavenworth. These formations stretch high in the sky and are perfect for rock climbers and hikers alike.

From Mountains to Prairies 2016 (Pt. 2) - Washington State's Bavarian Town of Leavenworth
July 2, 2016 - Welcome to Leavenworth, Washington, on the eastern side of the Northern Cascade Mountains. Leavenworth is located on the Wenatchee River where the forests of the Cascade Mountains and the dry interior of Washington State meet. Once just a sleepy little town with no character, locals then gave it a Bavarian makeover to increase tourism...and it totally worked. It brought me here, didn't it? I haven't been here since 1987 and, frankly, besides having WiFi, I doubt it's changes too much.
I made sure to stop at the local Christmas store, Kris Kringl, to pick up some items for my Christmas Village, too: a sasquatch. Of course!
Sadly I didn't have the time to visit the biergarten or sausage garten on this trip. Maybe next time.

Made our way back to WA. We head up through the snow to see Santa in Leavenworth.
Backpacking the Enchantments - Eight Mile/Caroline Zone
Backpacked and stayed overnight in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Eight Mile/Lake Caroline Zone of the Enchantments. It was 90 degree sunny days in Central Washington State for this 11.5 miles backpack and overnight.
More on the Enchantments (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
The Enchantments is an area comprising an upper and a lower basin, the lakes and tarns contained within them, and the peaks of the Stuart Range bounding the basins. The area is located entirely within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Leavenworth, Washington in the United States. The Enchantments is regarded as one of the most spectacular locations in the Cascade Range.
The United States Forest Service restricts access to the Enchantments, which includes five zones. The three most popular zones are the Snow Zone (from Icicle Creek up to Snow Lakes), the Colchuck Zone (the area surrounding Colchuck Lake) and the Core Enchantment Zone (the Upper and Lower Enchantment Basins and surrounding peaks). The other zones are the Stuart Zone (the area around Stuart Lake and the northern approaches to Mount Stuart) and the Eightmile/Caroline Zone (Eightmile Lake, Eightmile Mountain, Cashmere Mountain, and vicinity).
The 1981 Alpine Lakes Wilderness Plan established a quota of 60 people at one time as the carrying capacity of the Core Enchantment Zone. For overnight camping between June 15 and October 15 hikers in any of the five currently established zones must have permits. 75 percent of the permits for each hiking season are awarded in advance by lottery. The first round of the (very competitive) lottery includes all applications received by February 1st (moved up from March 1st in 2010). The other 25 percent of permits are issued each morning (except Sunday) at 7:45 a.m. at the Leavenworth ranger station for trips beginning the same day. If not enough permits are available for the day's applicants, the permits are awarded by lottery.
There are two primary approaches to the Enchantments Basin. Both trail heads are accessed via Icicle Creek Road. The Snow Lake trailhead is off Icicle Creek Road at a large parking lot next to the creek. The trail climbs 6.5 miles to Snow Lake gaining 4100 feet. From Snow lake the trail ascends over sloping granite rock another 1400 feet to Lake Viviane at the lower end of the Enchantments. This hike usually takes two days each way and is described as long, steep, and grueling. The alternate route is from the Stuart Lake trail head a couple of miles up Eightmile road off Icicle Creek Road. The trail up to Colchuck Lake is 4.75 miles long and gains 2100 feet; another 1.75 level miles bring hikers to the south end of the lake and Aasgard Pass, which climbs 2200 feet in less than a mile. This route is regarded by some as easier since it is shorter, but the Snow Lake route is the recommended approach to the lakes. Aasgard Pass is a steep scramble which is dangerous in snow. The Aasgard Pass route has also been described as in very bad taste because it bypasses the beauty of the lower basin to get to the upper basin first. The two routes can be combined to form a loop if the hiking party has two cars, a bicycle, or otherwise arranges transportation between the trail heads.
