The Erhai Lake (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Er Lake, Chinese Erhai (ěrhǎi, 洱海), is an alpine fault lake in Yunnan province, China. Its name means Ear-shaped Sea, due to its shape as seen by locals and travellers. Er Lake was also known as Yeyuze or Kunming Lake in ancient times. A commonly-seen mistranslation is Erhai Lake.
Erhai is situated at 1,972 metres (6,470 ft) above sea level. In size, the North-South length of the lake is 40 kilometres (25 mi) and the East-West width is roughly 7--8 kilometres (4.3--5.0 mi). Its area is 250 square kilometres (97 sq mi), making it the second largest highland lake of China, after Dianchi Lake. Its circumference reaches 116 kilometres (72 mi), its average depth is of 11 metres (36 ft) and the total storage capacity of 2.5 billion cubic metres (2,000,000 acre·ft).
The lake is sandwiched between the Cangshan Mountains to the West and Dali City. It starts at Dengchuan at its northern extremity and finishes at Xiaguan city in the South, receiving water from the Miju and Mici Rivers (in the North), the Bolou River (in the East) and smallers streams from the Cangshan Mountains. Yangbi River is the lake's outlet in the South and eventually flows into the Lancang River (Mekong River).
The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Highlights include Erhai Lake Park and the Butterfly Springs on the Western bank. Islands on the lake -- including Guanyin Ge, Jinsuo Island (Golden Shuttle Island), Nanzhao Fengqing Island and Xiaoputuo Island -- are also available for visits.
The lake is an important food source for the local people (Bais), who are famous for their fishing method: their trained cormorants catch fish and return them to fishmongers. The birds are prevented from swallowing their fish by rings fixed around their neck. Erhai also holds a high diversity of typical carps (Cyprinus), with for example the endemic species (C. barbatus, C. daliensis and the Spring Fish C. longipectoralis) being found here.
The lake used to be a royal deer ranch for the Nanzhao Kingdom.

A great bar run by an English guy. They put on live music across their 2 venues in the city. Their own craft beer is really good too, it's a real cross between Camden and China!
0:40 - Exploring the Ancient Town Streets
One of the best things to do in Dali is just walk the streets of the ancient town. You can spend a few hours wandering the paved streets, admiring the traditional architecture of the Bai ethnic minority, trying their local food and snacks, and buying some souvenirs. Dali is probably the most beautiful ancient town in Yunnan, only rivalled by Lijiang (which is much busier!)
1:08 - Dali Ancient City Walls
There are 4 gates in the walls that protected the city of Dali, dating back 600 years to the Ming Dynasty and they are all really well preserved. The North Gate, East Gate, Southgate (it's coming home) and West Gate. We cycled around to see them all.
1:35 - The Three Pagodas
The 3 Pagodas of the Chongsheng Temple are a must see in Dali. You can easily cycle there from the Ancient City and spent a couple of hours exploring the temple grounds and the various gardens and towers.
3:10 - Lake Erhai
Erhai or Er Lake is an alpine fault lake outside the ancient city. Again, its very easy to cycle there. Its name means Ear-shaped Sea, due to its shape. The second largest lake in the province after Dianchi Lake in Kunming (featured in the 3rd episode of the China Series)
3:45 - Kanshan (Cangshan) Mountain
The Cang Mountains (Cangshan) are a mountain range west of Dali City. There are a few different options for cable cars to explore the heights of the mountain, we opted for the Qingbi Waterfall area. I have heard that the Horse Washing Pond is even more spectacular though.

Dali 2018 - family trip to China
Dali will be remembered for a beautiful relaxing afternoon at Three Pagodas and an experience of renting scooters and driving around Erhai lake. Even though the road was under construction and the lake was covered in fog and did not impress the family that much, the joy of making kilometers by electric bike was just what we needed to rewind and get ready for our way back to Guangzhou.
Cycling and Swimming at Erhai Lake, Dali
For our second day in the ancient city of Dali, we rented bicycles and went on a cruise of the countryside. We stopped to swim in the Er Hai Lake, rode by a famous temple with its three pagodas, and enjoyed a delicious lunch. In the evening, we strolled the streets and enjoyed some more delicious local food.

“ 風花雪月 ” 是大理最著名的四大景觀。
1、“下關風” 大理的下關（地名）是一個山口，這是蒼洱之間主要的風源，風期之長、風力之強為世所罕見。
2、“上關花” 上關（地名）是一片開闊的草原，鮮花鋪地，奼紫嫣紅，人稱“上關花”；大理氣候溫和濕潤， 止於涼，暑止於溫，最宜於花木生長。於是， 愛花養花也成了白族人民的一種生活習俗。
3、“蒼山雪“ 經夏不消的蒼山雪，是素負盛名的大理 “風花雪月” 四景之一，也是蒼山景觀中的一絕。寒冬時節，百里點蒼，白雪皚皚，陽春三月，雪線以上仍堆銀壘玉。最高峰馬龍峰的積雪更是終年不化，盛夏時節山腰以上蒼翠欲滴，而峰巔仍縈雲在載雪。
4、“洱海月” 洱海的水，透明度較高，湖面碧波蕩漾，每當風和日麗的夜晚，行近洱海之濱，仰望天空，玉鏡高懸，俯視海面，地湧銀濤，水光接天，萬頃茫然，一輪明月在海中隨波飄蕩，洱海月色，令人驚嘆。

Lake Erhai in Dali City of China
Lake Erhai in Dali City of China,ancient times it is called Kunming Pool, Weihe River, Ye Yuze and so on. Because it looks like a human ear, it is named Erhai, located in Dali City, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The general lake area is about 246 square kilometers (about 251 square kilometers), and the water storage capacity is about 2.95 billion cubic meters. It is a long and narrow shape. It starts from the southern end of Wuyuan County in the north, ends in Xiaguan in Dali in the south, and is 40 kilometers long from north to south. Next to Dianchi Lake, the second largest lake in Yunnan, ranked 7th among China's freshwater lakes. The Bohai Sea was formed at the end of the Ice Age, and its cause is mainly sedimentation erosion. It is a lake with plateau tectonic faults and an elevation of 1972 meters.
Erhai has seven main functions of water supply, agricultural irrigation, power generation, climate regulation, fishery, shipping and tourism. The western part of the Erhai Sea is a bit like a screen, and the east side is surrounded by the Jade Mountain. The space is beautiful.
In 1981, the Yunnan Provincial People's Government approved the establishment of the Cangshan Bohai Nature Reserve. In 1994, it was promoted to the national level. The main protection targets are the plateau freshwater lakes and aquatic animals and plants, the natural landscape of the north-south flora and fauna transition zone, and the glacier relics, covering an area of 79,700 hectares.

Dali is definitely a Food town, and there's no better way to explore the local food of a great place, or meet the local people where you are, than when you are traveling by bicycle.
Beautiful day in Yunnan, Southern China. This province is not only famous for its local food, its also incredibly beautiful. The natural scenery of Yunnan is hard to beat, and DaLi is one of the main cities you should try to visit if you are ever in this part of the world. Here are the prices from this day:

In Dali you can hike the Cloud Traveller's Path, visit the Zhonghe Temple, take the Cangshan Cable Car, bike around the Erhai Lake and climb the Jizu Mountain. Unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs. We only take a walk through the Old City of Dali and visited the Chongsheng Temple to see the world famous three Pagodas.
Good shelters for the rain are the Bakery88 and Tin Tin Belgian Waffles.
