Dali Old Town, Yunnan, China in 4K (Ultra HD)
Dali was capital of two large kingdoms from the 8th and 10th centuries, until conquered by the Mongols in the 12th century. The present Old Town was rebuilt by the Ming dynasty in the beginning of the 14th century. Outside of the Old Town are the famous Three Pagodas, from 9th-10th century.

TOP 10 of CHINA: MUST SEE SIGHTs & HIDDEN GEMs for your FIRST VISIT
These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!
In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.
EVERY PLACE FEATURED AND INFORMATION MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).
FULL CHINA SERIES PLAYLIST:
APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!
BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.
CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.
CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.
DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.
GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.
HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.
KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.
LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.
RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.
SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.
TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):
VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. I used Astrill and it worked really well on my laptop and my phone (again not a sponsor):
XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.
XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.
YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

Best Food and Amazing Landscapes in Dali, China (Yunnan Trip Part 5)
I went on a 6 hour bus ride from Kunming to Dali and then took a taxi to Shuanglang. A long commuting day, but it was all worth it. The street food in Dali and the landscape around Erhai Lake were amazing

CHINA SERIES FULL PLAYLIST:
SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL, it's the best way to support me and means I can keep making more content. I currently upload a new episode every Tuesday:
Here's a detailed breakdown of information as mentioned in the film (a table of contents, if you will):
0:30 - Views from the Train Ride from Hong Kong to Yangshuo
1:14 - Arriving in Yangshuo: What is the town like?
A bit of background on the town and how it might not be the nature serenity you are looking for.
1:35 - How to get to the Yangshuo TV Tower Viewpoint (hard climb)
The best views in Yangshuo are accessible from the town centre, but it's a pretty long climb up to the top of a mountain. We followed the instructions on how to get there by ILP Blog, a really good article. Remember to bring 10 Yuan per person:
3:23 - This is what the TV Tower view looks like
4:03 - The Views from Yangshuo Park (easy climb)
A much less physically demanding climb to some nice views over the town. It's a really nice public park too, definitely worth checking out.
4:28 - Our Accommodation, Sudder Street Guesthouse
Great place to stay, just outside the town centre. An amazing pool, with great views. Dorms are £3 a night and private rooms (en-suite) with a balcony are £18.
4:55 - Yangshuo National Park
This is where you'll spend most of your time and where you will find the famous bamboo rafts that you've seen on Instagram. We rented bicycles to get around, but some people rent mopeds/motorbikes instead. You're going to want the freedom of your own transport.
6:00 - Here's the bamboo rafts
6:26 - Moon Hill, my favourite sunset spot (and favourite part of Yangshuo in general). A natural archway that has featured in one of the Transformers films I think.
And thats it. Any questions, let me know in the comments!
