4. Kunming Moon LakeShilin County The Stone Forest or Shilin is a notable set of limestone formations about 500 km2 located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, near Shilin approximately 90 km from the provincial capital Kunming. The tall rocks seem to arise from the ground in a manner somewhat reminiscent of stalagmites, or with many looking like petrified trees, thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. Since 2007, two parts of the site, the Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village , have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the South China Karst. Mar 10, 2012 China_Villagers go long way to fetch water with mule in SW China
Forty-three families in a village of the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture of southwest China's Yunnan Province have to fetch water with their mules twice a day from a pond six kilometers away due to the worsening drought since last year.
Li Juxian is a farmer in Alubai Village, Santang Township, Luxi County. She has a daughter and a son who stay in the school and will not come back home until Friday, and her husband is a migrant worker. She has to fetch water with fellow villagers every day.
Mules are household pack-animals in the village that are also used for plowing. Farming is now impossible because of the drought, so mules are used to carry water every day.
Li and other villagers followed a relatively wide road before stepping on a steep mountain trail narrow enough for only one person. After covering a sandy path, they had to take a break before hiking on another narrow mountain trail for half an hour to reach the water source.
It is a pond barely the size of a queen bed into which spring water trickles from the mountain.
Li was the first to scoop the water, but she filled only two of her four buckets, afraid that the water would not be enough for the other villagers. She mounted the buckets on her mule when it suddenly refused to go until another villager came over to help. A couple of villagers were too late for the water.
I didn't get water today, and such a thing also happened before. I have no way but to go back home empty-handed, said a villager.
Li returned from the pond at 15:00 and didn't get home until almost 19:00. The six-kilometer distance drained her for almost four hours.
