From Medellin to Guatape where Pablo Escobar spent most of his days! 90+ Countries with 3 Kids
Join us for a tour of Guatape, a colorful Andean resort in Colombia!
Located on the shore of the artificial lake called Embalse Guatapé, the town has become famous among travelers around the world for the fresco-like decoration you will find on the traditional houses. In fact, Guatape is also known as Pueblo de Zócalos, where Zócalos refers to beautiful, vivid molding covering walls and floor.
Also, the surrounding scenery is absolutely breathtaking, which is a reason more to visit this place. The Rock of Guatapé or La Piedra de El Peñol is one of the town’s main attractions. The landform is a granitic rock remnant that has resisted weathering and erosion for many years. The indigenous Tahamí, former inhabitants of this region, worshiped it, but it wasn’t officially climbed until July 1954.

Colombia: Medellin, La Piedra and Guatapé
In this trip, Carlos Phoenix and family go to Medellin, Colombia as a first leg to La Piedra (The Rock). The rock is an icon surrounded by the most amazing valleys and mountains we have ever seen. A beautiful spot for a movie, the lakes and mountains create a fantasy environment for the most romantic and nature loving tourists. At the top of the 700 step rock, a panoramic video, unlike we have seen before. A must travel spot for the traveler. Then they head to the most colorful town in Colombia, Guatapé where the streets and town are full of art and decor, with music and culture around every corner. It was a six hour trip on bus, going through mountain tops with beautiful towns over the clouds. From Medellin it was an additional two hours to “The Rock”.
Enjoy. Please share and Subscribe and help support these glimpses of the amazing views.
PABLO ESCOBAR TOUR in Medellin
In this video we visit one Pablo Escobar's building, the 7 story tall Monaco building; we also visit his grave site, the prison he built for himself and the place of his eventual death.
At one stage Pablo Escobar was the second wealthiest person in the world. So it is of little surprise that he and his family lived in the penthouse of a seven story building in El Pablado; and left the lower levels of this building vacant. This building was called the Monaco building and was partially destroyed by a car bomb, set outside by the Cali Cartel. This bomb managed to kill 3 of Pablo's security guards and partially deafen his daughter Manuela.
Surprisingly the grave of Pablo Escobar is nothing flashy or elaborate, and I was actually quite disappointed to discover this. At this site Pablo was buried along side his parents and also a security guard called Lemon; who died on the rooftop with Pablo in the shootout with the police. No one really knows if his body is still there or if it was removed and returned. The reason for this mystery is a paternity test, or lack of one in fact. It seems that one of the many woman Pablo Escobar slept with fell pregnant, and so her family wanted some of Pablo's DNA for a paternity test. Pablo's family did not want to share any of their millions of dollars with an illegitimate child, and so had his body removed. But nobody knows to where or if it was eventually returned to lay next to his mother.
The site of where Pablo Escobar was eventually killed by police is now a Spanish school. He was killed on the rooftop while trying to flee once again, along with one of his loyal guards, Lemon. The rooftop he was actually killed on is no more, as an additional level has been added to the building.
The prison Pablo Escobar built for himself is called the cathedral. It included a swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis court, soccer field, private helicopter pad, private chef and all the luxuries of any 5 star resort.

The Gangs That Inherited Pablo Escobar's Drug Empire: Cooking with Cocaine
Subscribe to VICE News here:
In Colombia, the heirs to Pablo Escobar's drug empire are conducting business as usual — though with a somewhat lower profile. Today's Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. But violent gangs operating in the city's slums provide the muscle; known as combos, they’ve carved Medellin into fiefdoms, imposing invisible borders between gang territory — borders that, when ignored, often get people killed.
VICE News traveled to Medellin to meet gang members — along with top cartel leaders and assassins — who revealed the inner workings of the city's modern-day cocaine industry.

EL Peñol Rock Guatape Colombia | What to do in Medellin Colombia | 4K Video (Recommended)
El Peñol Rock Guatape Colombia. Find out things to do when visiting Medellin Colombia. Take a quick trip from the city and explore Guatape and El Peñol Rock.
To climb the top of the rock you need to go up 740 Steps. The journey is exhausting but well worth it. The cost of a ticket to climb the rock is $18000 COP. It is a 10 million Ton Rock.
I took some video with Mavic 2 Zoom Drone.
As you may notice there is a Giant G on the side of the rock. The G came from locals claiming the Rock under Guatape and once the People of El Penol noticed they came ready to fight.
The Tahamies Indians, who inhabited the neighboring region, worshipped the rock. The Rock is located between the Colombian towns of Guatapé and El Peñol.

Pablo Escobar La Manuela Hacienda Ruins Tour in Guatape, Antioquia Colombia.
►Watch Hacienda Napoles Tour video:
I took a roughly three hour bus ride from Medellin to Guatape, Colombia. Guatape is known for its colorful decorated houses and the Piedra del Peñol. It is also where Pablo Escobar decided to build one of his biggest fincas, La Manuela, which was bombed by Los Pepes. Ultimately the ruins were turned into a touristic attraction, which you can visit by a boat, that you only have to pay 5,000 Colombian pesos at the time I went.

One of the biggest rocks in the world ⛰???????? - Guatapé and El Peñol - Colombia
Hey guys!
I was back in Colombia for about a month, visiting family and traveling for a while. The first days we were in San Andres and we had an incredible time there! Be sure to check that out because I think this is a must of Colombia ( This time we went to probably one of my favorite places around Antioquia, and this is Guatapé and el Peñol. This is the home of a really incredible landmark of Colombia, and this is the Peñol/ Guatapé Stone. This Stone is definitely mind-boggling since it just looks like a massive solid 285 meters rock in the middle of a 6000 hectares dam.
If you ask around you will hear all types of theories on how this rock got here. There are the ones that say it was the aliens(of course), others say that it came from space, and others say it has just been lucky with erosion. I go more for the latest one, but whatever it is we need to admire how incredible it’s to see it.
You can hike all the way to the top of the rock and have an incredible view of all the Guatapé Dam. This has a small entry cost and will take you over 700 stairs, but believe me, it’s completely worth it.
Once we went back down we went to the town of Guatapé. This is a rather small town, but the buildings are incredibly beautiful, built in a colorful colonial style to attract people and lots of places where you can eat snacks and have a nice time.
This is considered for some the ”Sea” of Medellín, and during the weekends it’s full of people enjoying the place and doing aquatic sports. So I would recommend going to this place during the weekend if you prefer to shop around and do extra activities. If you prefer fewer people definitely during the week hehehe.
Later we went to see the replica of the old town of el Peñol. This is because the original town was actually flooded to build the Dam. It’s a small place but quite cute. From here sometimes you can even see the old church.
This was pretty much it, I really hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed making it :) Be sure to give it a like, subscribe if you have not yet and comment what you liked the most.

A brief overview of my past 2 days in Medellin, Colombia. Went on a Pablo Escobar Tour which was very interesting learning about the areas he grew up in and to see where he was shot. Then went to the incredible city of Guatape and climbed the massive rock. Finally, headed to a coffee farm 6,000 ft. above sea level in the Andes Mountains. Now on to the next country!
La piedra del Peñol desde un Drone | THE ROCK OF GUATAPE
The Rock of Guatapé (Spanish: El Peñón de Guatapé),[1] also known as the Stone of El Peñol (Spanish: La Piedra Del Peñol), or simply La Piedra or El Peñol,[2] is a landmark inselberg in Colombia. It is located in the town and municipality of Guatapé, Antioquia.[3] The town of El Peñol, which borders Guatapé, has also historically claimed the rock as their own and thus the monolith is sometimes referred to as the Stone of El Peñol instead of the Rock of Guatapé.
The landform is a grantic rock remanant that has resisted weathering and erosion, likely as result of being less fractured than the surrounding bedrock. Peñón de Guatapé is an outcrop of the Antioquia Batholith.[3]
Pablo Escobar's Neighbors In Guatapé, Colombia Ep. 4 (Travel Diary)
Hola everyone — thanks for exploring the Colombian countryside with me!
As most of you already know, I am currently off budget backpacking through South America, and this vlog is apart of a whole South America travel series. Right now, I am backpacking in Colombia. This travel vlog takes place in Guatape, Colombia or as I see it, my childhood fantasy land. More specifically, I stayed at the Happy Buddha Hostel.
This travel vlog begins in the El Poblado district of Medellin, Colombia. I pack my bags and head for the city metro station. From here, I get off at the North Bus Station, and I catch a 2 hour bus to the Medellin countryside.
Once I arrived in Guatape, I have to take a motor taxi rig back 10 miles because I got off at the wrong bus stop. Once I was on the right track again, I started my solo hike to my remote hostel, the Happy Buddha and was absolutely in love with the landscape unfolding before my eyes. Five minutes in, I met a few locals, whom insisted on giving me a ride to my destination. Despite the language barrier, they were so kind to me. Wherever you are guys, thank you and much love to you.
Almost immediately upon arriving, my new friends and I hit the lake for some standup paddle boarding fun. We played fetch with the pups, chilled out, and shared some laughs before we really started getting to know each other.
Because it was a new hostel, it was literally just me, the volunteers, and the owner all day for a week. I fell in love with them all and found them so hilarious. To say the absolute least, we all had SO much fun together.
In this vlog, you’ll get to see some of the fun times we had. I’m so excited to be able to share authentic, fun moments with you guys! Anyways, so enjoy that.
Me and the ladies chill out by the pool, and they share their perspective on our American gun policy. I quickly learned that they felt very passionate about this, and understanding their view on the matter, having never had guns in their country, was extremely eye opening. It was hard not to see their view, and it became evident that my culture had normalized the idea of guns when really it is, in fact, a pretty radical notion for many in other parts of the world.
—please comment any thoughts on the matter down below—
Additionally, we hit the lake again, but this time on motorboat. We toured the whole countryside via water, and guys, it was breathtaking. We say the stunning Piedra del Penol, an underwater city, and a lot of Pablo Escobar related things including his home and his family’s home.
We toured the La Manuela, which was Pablo Escobar’s vacation home in it’s better days. However, in 1993, it was bombed by the Los Pepes group with 200 kg of TNT. The Los Pepes are the People Persecuted by Pablo Escobar. Thus, we toured the ruins of the once spectacular mansion of the infamous Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar.
Thank you for watching, guys!

Things to do in Medellin, Colombia - Climbing El Peñol, the rock of Guatapé!
One of the best things to do when you travel to Medellin if visiting Guatape, and of course climb the giant Rock called the stone of El Penol (Or la Piedra del Peñol, in Spanish)!
It was such an amazing experience to ascend and enjoy the landscape, the view is marvelous!
According to Geologist, the stone is approximately 65 years old. The most accepted theory about its origin says that it was formed by clashes between tectonic plates that caused an outcrop of several rocks to the surface, of which due to its magnitude, the most important is Piedra del Peñol.
