Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary Victoria BC - Gingerbread Cottage
Amazing creatures have a safe place in the Esquimalt Lagoon migratory bird sanctuary. This lagoon is just a short drive from our Gingerbread Cottage bed and breakfast. Vanessa and I came here today because we love birds. There are beautiful swans here, but I get a kick out of this cute looking bird with webbed feet. I don't know what kind of bird this is. This comical video also reveals that I like talking to birds and asking them questions. If anyone can tell me what type of bird this is, please do so in the comments.

As a child, Vanessa was a real life “Heidi” living in the Eschen Villa on the clean, cold alpine Attersee Lake, in Seewalchen Austria, 50 KM East of Salzburg
Vanessa’s birthplace was located 50 meters from her Godmother’s famous Paulick Villa – the Summer Playground to Vienna’s Elite Art Noveau Community including Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Richard Teschner and Friedrich Paulick at the turn of the 19th century.
In fact, the aunt of Vanessas' Godmother, Gertrude Floege, was the famous fashion designer Emelia Floege – life companion of the famous artist Gustav Klimt who frequently painted at the Paulick Villa..
Also the last Countess Maria dei Medici, who lived adjacent to the Eschen Villa hand wrote a poem for Vanessa as a child… Not many People can say that!
Vanessa got her teaching Degree in Salzburg but her real love and talents were for cooking.. after moving to Vancouver Island, she honed her chef skills under the eye of her brother in law Dieter von Schellwitz who had been the first executive chef at the famous Ilikai Resort in Waikiki, and had chef career in New York and San Francisco.
Coming to Vancouver Island via Culture City itself – Salzburg Austria – A true Austrian,Vanessa has pure Mozart flowing through her veins and a delicious piping hot Austrian ApfelStrudel in the Oven for her many guests! Feeding the wild birds... they are not used to this cold weather- It's cold for coastal Victoria. Minus 18 including the wind chill factor... sorry about wind noise.

Esquimalt Lagoon, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, February 6, 2010, four days after the bridge to Coburg Peninsula was closed to vehicular traffic owing to structural problems. On a normal weekday 3500 vehicles take this route, right through a federally designated migratory bird sanctuary. On this particular weekend afternoon, traffic was extremely light- in the order of one vehicle every ten minutes or so.

The unique geological history and physical processes of Esquimalt Lagoon have created an area rich in wildlife that is highly valued by locals and visitors to the area. This shallow lagoon is enclosed by sand and gravel barrier spit, and is connected to the ocean with a tidal channel at the northeast end. The lagoon is bordered by some of the oldest Coastal Douglas Fir forest remaining in the Victoria area.

Essencia Village in Esquimalt Lagoon
Essencia Village in Esquimalt Lagoon. This aerial tour is of Essencia Village in the Esquimalt Lagoon.
Essencia Village is a proposed development at the shore of Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood. The property is at the end of Heatherbell Road, north of the Aquattro development.
Plans are for several residential buildings of four to 15 stories, commercial space and community gardens, plus the restoration of a heritage house. A creek running through the property will be incorporated into the plan as well. It appears as though plans were first released in summer 2009. There appears to be a significant ecological and farming theme to the development.
Esquimalt Lagoon features miles of breathtaking ocean beachfront perfect for walks, beachcombing, sand castles and water play, Across the road from the beach is the Esquimalt lagoon, where ducks and swans float and herons and eagles are often spotted along with many other shorebirds. The calm water of the lagoon is perfect for a peaceful ride in the canoe or kayak. I hope you enjoy my aerial tour of the Esquimalt Lagoon.

Esquimalt Lagoon Extreme Low Tide: Great BC Beaches
In June of 2004, there was a 30 year low tide. We wandered off to Esquimalt Lagoon (Victoria BC, near Fort Rodd Hill) to see how the beach would look. Its a great beach any time, but the extreme low tide made for quite a bit of nice sandy beach to walk on. Quite a few people were walking around the beach in amazement at how the beach looked. There were quite a few very large clam shells on the lower parts of the beach. You can see the Fort Rodd Hill Lighthouse in the pan around.
This is a great area for kayaking. There's the lagoon, the open ocean, and the reversing tide flow at the entrance to the lagoon.
