Montevideo is the pleasant capital city of Uruguay, a country in South America. It is situated on the east bank of the Rio de la Plata and is the southernmost capital city in South America. It revolves around the Plaza de la Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel. This plaza leads to Ciudad Vieja (the old town), with art deco buildings, colonial homes and landmarks including the towering Palacio Salvo and neoclassical performance hall Solís Theatre. Mercado del Puerto is an old port market filled with many steakhouses.
Montevideo was founded in 1724. For much of its early history, the city consisted of what is now known as the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town). By the mid-19th century the city began to grow eastward towards what is now known as Centro. The demolition of the old fort that used to mark the eastern boundary of Old Town enabled the construction of what is now Plaza Independencia. Eventually Boulevard Artigas was built around Centro, but by 1910, suburbs were already developing beyond it which were later annexed into the growing city.
The nation’s capital and home to nearly half of Uruguay’s population, Montevideo is a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life. Stretching 20km from east to west, the city wears many faces, from its industrial port to the exclusive beachside suburb of Carrasco near the airport. In the historic downtown business district, art deco and neoclassical buildings jostle for space alongside grimy, worn-out skyscrapers that appear airlifted from Havana or Ceauşescu’s Romania, while to the southeast the shopping malls and modern high-rises of beach communities such as Punta Carretas and Pocitos bear more resemblance to those of Miami or Copacabana. Music, theater and the arts are alive and well here – from elegant older theaters and cozy little tango bars to modern beachfront discos – and there’s a strong international flavor, thanks to the many foreign cultural centers and Montevideo’s status as administrative headquarters for Mercosur, South America’s leading trading bloc.
Montevideo is not a large city and it boasts a very efficient public transportation system so getting around is not difficult at all. If you are not bashful about your Spanish, feel free to ask people which bus route you need to take to get to your destination as it can be the most effective and cheap option. The Rambla is a waterside roadway has people biking, fishing, drinking mate, and enjoying the great views. Spend part of Sunday morning with the locals on La Feria Tristán Narvaja Flea Market. Pocitos barrio lies about 2 miles south-east of El Centro. The Pocitos beach runs east from Punta Trouville for about a mile.

One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the magnificent Palacio Salvo, in downtown.
Given its beautiful facade and unique styling, the name Palacio, meaning palace, seems a fitting title.
The building was constructed in the late 1920s, the creation of architect Mario Palanti.
The Palacio Salvo's singular appearance is a mixture of Art Deco and Gothic styles.
The initial plans for the structure were for its use as a hotel, but it became a residential and office building instead.

STORYLINE:
Argentina appealed on Thursday to the United Nations' highest court to order an immediate halt to Uruguay's construction of two paper mills, saying the fragile ecosystem of the Uruguay River and the health of hundreds of thousands of people are at risk.
Pollution from the mills will cast the smell of rotten eggs over a vast pristine river basin, now a centre of eco-tourism, and irreparably damage local fishing and agriculture, Argentina's delegates argued to the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court.
Uruguay, seeking to protect the largest foreign investment in its history, has said the mills' emissions will meet internationally tolerated pollution levels and will not damage agriculture or aquatic life along the river.
Uruguay's ambassador to France, Hector Gros Espiell said he hopes the ethical and judicial independence of the court will lead to a ruling in his country's favour.
Argentina's chief delegate to the court, Susana Ruiz Cerutti, believed Argentina was undertaking two projects on a monumental scale in a location that was the worst possible from an environmental point of view.
She said What we believe is that the construction of these plants has been made in violation of an international treaty that binds Argentina with Uruguay. These two projects have caused damage, and will cause damage to the Uruguay river and its perimeters.
Argentina accused Uruguay of violating a 1975 treaty calling for protection of the 1,600-kilometre waterway, which supports 150 species of fish and 400 bird species.
During the hearings, Uruguay said that pollution controls are tougher than the treaty requires, and it has offered to allow Argentina to monitor emissions from the mills.
The dispute threatened to escalate earlier this year, when Argentina blockaded bridges between the two countries.
Uruguay complained that it lost hundreds of millions of dollars in business and tourist traffic.

Montevideo (Spanish pronunciation: [monteβiˈðeo]) is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country's total population) in an area of 201 square kilometres (78 sq mi). The southernmost capital city in the Americas, Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata.

It was also under brief British rule in 1807. Montevideo is the seat of the administrative headquarters of Mercosur and ALADI, Latin America’s leading trade blocs, a position that entailed comparisons to the role of Brussels in Europe.The 2017 Mercer's report on quality of life, rated Montevideo first in Latin America, a rank the city has consistently held since 2005. As of 2010, Montevideo was the 19th largest city economy in the continent and 9th highest income earner among major cities. In 2019, it has a projected GDP of $47.7 billion, with a per capita of $27,542.In 2018, it was classified as a beta global city ranking eighth in Latin America and 84th in the world. Montevideo hosted every match during the first FIFA World Cup, in 1930. Described as a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life, and a thriving tech center and entrepreneurial culture, Montevideo ranked eighth in Latin America on the 2013 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. In 2014, it was also regarded as the fifth most gay-friendly metropolis in the world and the first in Latin America. It is the hub of commerce and higher education in Uruguay as well as its chief port. The city is also the financial hub of Uruguay and the cultural anchor of a metropolitan area with a population of around 2 million.
