Ethnographic Museum, Varna
The Ethnographic museum was opened in 1974 in a restorated house from the National Revival period, built around 1860. Due to the initiative of Maria Nikolova - ethnographer, Assen Stoychev - artist and Kamen Goranov - architect, the creation of the exposition was possible. The museum reflects the rich material and cultural heritage of the local population during the second half of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century - catering, crafts, clothes, jewellery, ritual bread, survachki (special colour folded sticks, decorated with pop-corns, candies, ribbons, used by children on the first day of the New Year to tap neighbours on the back, wishing them good health, happiness, success in the new year)..

Archeological museum Varna presented by What's Up Bulgaria
The Archeological museum in Varna
1. Would you introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Igor Nazarenko and I am head of department archeology of the Archeological museum in Varna.
I'm an archaeologist by profession and I work here since 1998 year.
2. When the museum was founded?
The history of the museum starts at 19th century, when is established Archaeological Society of Varna in 1877 year.
The first collection of the museum was opened in 1888 year with a decision of the municipal council of Varna.
And the first museum collection in this building was shown in 1895 year. Actually, the museum is housed in former Girl's School,
which is the biggest Middle School of the Balkan Peninsula, which is built in the end of 19th century, from 1892 to 1898 year.
The museum is housed in this building since 1983 year.
3. What makes The Archeological museum in Varna unique?
It has the largest museum area in Bulgaria. It shows collections from different eras ranging from the Mesolithic through the end of 19th century.
Part of the exhibits aren't a subject of archeology but modern history and ethnography. This what most attracts tourists in our museum is
the famous Open Necropolis of Varna, where was found and processed the oldest gold in the world. There are a few more fields in the area like this, but here is been housed the largest collection of fields like this,
in Necropolis, which is uncovered in Varna.
4. Which find is the most popular, most interesting and has the widest audience?
This is the Necropolis. It attracts most tourists and specialists, because the people have been always attracted by shiny things.
Some of them comes only to see the oldest processed gold.
5. From which age groups the museum is visited?
It depends of the season. In the summer we have a large attendance of tourist groups, which are of different ages - families with children.
In the winter mainly coming students, after September 15 to early July when the school year ends.
Then the museum is visited by authorized school groups and pensioner's cruises which are moving on the Danube.
This period also is with preferential prices for tourist trips - most people who are aged and have smaller incomes like southwest Europe who anteriorly visit Varna during this period are our visitors.
We meet people who come in town.
6. From which historical period are most finds in the museum?
There are finds from different periods ranging from Mesolithic through to 19th century, but this what we are exhibited shows prehistory, antiques from roman era (1st do 7th century) and the history of medieval Varna,
because here began the foundation of the Bulgarian State. The coming of Asparuh according to the written sources is exactly in the outskirts of Varna so-called Odessos
and here ends the medieval history of Bulgaria with the defeat of the campaigns of Vladislv Varnenchik The Third, who makes the last attempts for restoration of bulgarian independence. The medieval history of Bulgaria begin and ends in Varna.
7. Considering all these findings, can we judge when was the prime of Varna?

مدينة فارنا Varna
The city of Varna is situated in the North-Eastern part of Bulgaria, on the Black Sea shore. Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and the largest one on the Black Sea shore with population of about 330 000 people. Because of its history and its economical and cultural significance, it is often called the Sea Capital of Bulgaria.
The average January temperature in Varna is +1.7 °С, the average July temperature is +22.8 °С, and the average annual temperature is +12.2 ° С, which makes it very appropriate for holiday sea tourism during the warm months of the year.
The town was established in the 6th century BC under the name of Odessos by emigrants from the town of Milet in Asia Minor. For a short time it turned into a polis and one of the most important ports and commercial centers on the Black Sea.
For a few decades Odessos was within the borders of the Macedonian Empire of Alexander the Great, but later it reestablished its independence and again rose as an economical, commercial and cultural center. The city was coining its own money which is an evidence of its development. In the 15th year AD Odessos was included within the borders of the Roman Empire. In 1201 the Bulgarian tsar Kaloyan (born 1168-- died 1207) integrated the town to Bulgaria, and in 1366 Varna was given to the Dobrudzha ruler Dobrotitsa, and it had served as his capital. In 1398 Varna was conquered by the Ottoman conquerors. During the Revival (18th -- 19th century) it was developed as a cultural and commercial center.
Today Varna is a modern city with a rich cultural calendar. Two of the most modern multifunctional halls in the county are situated here -- the Palace of Culture and Sports and the Festival and Congress Center, which allow the conducting of multiple international cinema festivals, scientific forums and sport events, among which are the following: International Theater Festival Varna Summer, Ethnic Festival, International Jazz Festival Varna Summer, International Folklore Festival of Varna, International Film Festival Love is Folly, International Festival of Puppet Art Golden Dolphin, International Photographic Saloon, Bulgarian Film Festival Golden Rose, etc.
With its modern port, railway connection and international airport providing connection with 35 states and more than 100 world cities, Varna is one of the largest transport centers in Bulgaria.
The strategic position of Varna on the map of south-eastern Europe has turned the city into one of the largest settlements on the Black Sea shore since antiquity. Multiple monuments presented today in the city Archaeological Museum date back to this period. The museum's impressive collection includes the finds from the Varna chalcolythic necropolis -- the oldest golden treasure in the world found by now, dating back to six thousand years ago.
Among the rest of the museums, some of the most interesting ones are the Maritime Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. The Maritime Museum collection includes articles related to the Bulgarian military and commercial shipping. The Ethnographic Museum presents the rich diversity of culture and the style of life of the population in Varna region from the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
As a cultural center, Varna has built one of the largest and richest fine arts galleries in Bulgaria.
An exposition of icons painted in the Age of Revival, are kept in the church St. Atanasius, built in the 18th century, and one of the most interesting historical landmarks of the town -- the Roman Baths -- the largest Roman bath on the Balkan Peninsula with an area of 7000 square meters, is situated in close proximity to it. It is the forth in size in Europe, after the baths of Karakala and Diocletian in Rome and in Trevira (Trier, Germany). It was used until the end of the 3rd century.

Nessebar is a well-known and popular resort in Bulgaria. There are not only great beaches, but also many attractions and beautiful scenery. In 1983, the area of the old town of Nessebar was included in the UNESCO world heritage list! The old part of Nessebar is located on a large Peninsula connected to the land by a wide road and pedestrian bridge. The city turns into a huge market — Souvenirs are sold in almost every building and stalls on the street, on every corner there are 3-4 restaurants.
It was here that the Emperor of Byzantium exiled the most powerful political opponents from noble families. On a small Peninsula began to live hundreds of famous and wealthy families, each of which sought to build their family Church. Nessebar is always crammed with more temples! Even after the capture of the city by the Ottoman Empire could not ban the Church!
Some of the beaches are fully cultivated-with lifeguards, international flag system and paid umbrellas / sunbeds. Some of them were wild. Almost every night there is a free zone for tourists. Seats on it always enough. You can find a beach with a gentle bottom, for children, and places where the depth is gained quite quickly — for yourself.
In addition to museums, you should definitely visit the Amphitheater. Located in the southern part of the city, on the same street with the Ethnographic Museum. The amphitheatre, in the evenings holds free concerts!
An important attraction of Nessebar is the Turkish fountain and Turkish baths. Picturesque delight narrow, winding streets paved with cobblestones, small parks where you can sit, and a kind of colorful Bulgarian houses of the Renaissance!
