In this episode, David’s Been Here explores what to see and do in Varna, one of the most beautiful towns along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.
David begins at the Archaeological Museum of Varna, which holds an exquisite collection of artifacts spanning thousands of years. Among all the priceless objects held here is the oldest uncovered golden treasure in the world. David shows us the skeleton of the Thracian man that was found alongside his golden treasure, dating back to 5,000 B.C. The man and gold were found in an ancient necropolis in the western industrial zone of Varna. Archaeologists believe the man was around 45-50 years old when he died.
Continuing with the history tour of the city, David makes a stop to see Varna’s Roman Bath complex. These are the fourth largest Roman Baths in Europe! The bath complex still has remnants of the different rooms where cold, warm, and hot water pools were situated. Another part of the complex that is visible are the shops, which are located just outside the bath complex.
Next stop is the Varna Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Bulgaria, dating back to 1886 (pre-dates the Sofia Cathedral). It is the biggest Cathedral on the Black Sea coast. Inside, David shows us some of the hand painted icons and scenes from Jesus’ life. Inside, the priest of the church gives us some more information about the history of the Cathedral.
After sightseeing, David works up an appetite. He heads to the pedestrian zone in the city center to get a snack of roasted corn sprinkled with cheese. For just 3 leva you can also enjoy this delicious snack.

The regions near Varna have been inhabited since ancient times - in the necropolis of Varna was found a gold treasure for which is claimed to be the oldest one on earth. On the shore of the bay in VI century B.C. was found the Odessos castle, which is also the ancient name of the city Varna. The city has been Roman and later Byzantine possession and later in the epoch of trouble Varna has been torn down.
In VII century khan Asparuh conquers Varna and settles in the castles of the acropolis. An act has been signed by the ambassadors of the Byzantine emperor Konstantin Pogonat and Asparuh. With that act it was proclaimed that Bulgaria was found on the Balkan Peninsula.
Later Varna becomes an important cultural and trade centre. City's development had been stopped when the country was held in slavery in 1389 but the city keeps its strategic value. In the time of regeneration, things started reviving and on 27 of June 1878, Varna is set free. The years after that the population increased and many refugees from Macedonia and Turkey came in Bulgaria. Nowadays the city is happy with its architecture dating from the beginning of the 20th century.

A Tour of VARNA, BULGARIA on the Black Sea
WHAT TO SEE AND DO in VARNA, BULGARIA
We've travelled a lot in our country this summer and one of the best weekends we've had was in Varna, the sea capital of Bulgaria.
Our top places and experiences:
1. Diner in the Sky - no words can describe this, unfortunately they were only there for 15 days and got closed on the next day we've visited.
2. Kaliakra Cape - epic cliff edge views to the endless horizon.
3. Bendida Beach - the clearest waters and powdery sand, about 1 hour drive from the center of Varna.
4. Botanical Garden - Balchik. This is the largest and most picturesque botanical garden in Bulgaria, along with a castle built next to it, it makes a popular foreign tourist destination during the summer months.
5. The Bay - honestly, go there for the food only. A beautiful seaview restaurant, located in a secluded bay in St. Constantine & Helena resort village, 15 min driving from Varna. There was a lot of seaweed when we were there in August, so didn't really swim much.

Things NOT to Do in Bulgaria
When venturing out to the Balkan nation of Bulgaria, you’ll likely be visiting Devil’s Bridge and taking a selfie in front of the Bulgarian State Monument. But, you should take into account these 10 things NOT to do to make your stay in this cultural melting pot more enjoyable.
1. Don’t Splurge on Cheap Liquor
It might be tempting to purchase some inexpensive alcohol during your stay, but cheap liquor can cost you your life. In 2015, four people died of alcohol poisoning after drinking counterfeit alcohol during celebrations. Be cautious...
2. Don’t Spend All Your Time in the Capital
Sofia is a beautiful and vibrant city that you should definitely explore. But there’s so much more to see, like the coastline of the Black Sea, the beautiful beaches, the stunning mountains, the crafts, the traditional dancing, and the streams of the Danube river.
3. Don’t Talk Bad About Their Football Team
Football is the most popular sport in the country. Bulgarians treat their football players like kings, and participating in some unfriendly banter about their favorite past time is a recipe for disaster. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
4. Don’t Trust Hotel Ratings
It's better if you check the traveler's reviews online, just in case you're looking for something different. Anyway, it's always good to know other people's opinions and suggestions.
5. Don’t Pack Too Much
You’ll want to leave some extra room. Bulgaria is full of markets and you’ll definitely want to take home, from handcrafted pottery to handmade jewelry. They also have amazing art galleries by some of the country’s most talented artists.
6. Don’t Confuse the Nod
In Bulgaria, they nod differently. For “yes,” they shake their head from side to side. And for “no,” they nod their head once upward. If you’re not aware of this, you might actually be saying no when you really mean yes!
7. Don’t Criticize Their Food
In Bulgaria, they love their traditional dishes (Visual: Musaka), and they want their guests to enjoy the food, too. If you’re not particularly fond of what’s on your plate, remain courteous, and chow down anyway. You don’t want to turn someone off and come across as an inconsiderate traveler.
8. Don’t Drink in Public in Varna
If you head out to the port city of Varna, be aware that there is a ban on drinking in public. Due to an increase in inebriated tourists, the mayor felt the need to prohibit drinking in gardens, alleyways, and parks.
9. Don’t Stop at Stop Signs
Okay, okay, this is a bit of an old one. Locals of Bulgaria used to take Stop signs very lightly, more of an suggestion than a rule. But times have changed and drivers have improved, although it doesn't hurt to be extra wary when faced with one of these signs.
10. Don’t Visit Without Brushing Up on Their History
They have a lot of pride in their country, and they know the ins and outs of the ancient Bulgarian kings and the discoveries that were made in the country centuries ago. If you want to impress them, brush up on some Bulgarian history beforehand.
Where do you want to know what not to do in next?
