Travel + Music = Road Trip
???? Laos - The roads in Laos are interesting to say the least so a 'roadtrip' involves rough roading, treks and trails and some paddling along the Mekong. This road trip starts in the beautiful former royal capital and UNESCO town of Luang Prabang, journeys by foot off road and into the misty blue mountains, down the Mekong, makes a stop at a Vang Vieng farm where I worked and ends in the colourful capital Vientiane.

Travelling Through Laos
Before my visit, Laos was one of those places really only known to me as a name. And that it was a socialist country. As a kid, I'd travelled to a number of countries 'behind the iron curtain' -- Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia and East Germany -- and so I was eager to see an Asia version of this political system. Some years after my visit to this small south-east Asian country, I lived for a year in the People's Republic of China.
In the 1990s when I travelled through Laos, you needed to have an invitation to stay from someone living in the country to be able to apply for a visa. Happily a woman I knew through friends worked for the World Health Organisation and was administering a water purification project in the capital, Vientiane. She was renting a rambling old wooden house overlooking the Mekong River, a house full of endearingly naughty monkeys who would steal anything not locked up or tied down!
Vientiane - a French protectorate from 1893 till a little after the Second World War - had as well as Laos architectural forms colonial echoes in triumphal arches, public buildings and old houses. Lots of photo ops for both styles.
When I visited the country, foreigners were often viewed with suspicion -- a road sign with an English translation five kilometres outside the capital stated ominously that foreigners found beyond this point would be shot.
I was told by local ex-pats that if I wanted to buy any Laos artefacts - antiquities or things with any age - I should go to the food market and having done my shopping ask nonchalantly if there was anything else for sale that day. And that was how I bought a beautiful set of three antique bronze weights.
The other most important memory of this trip was a to-die-for icy drink consisting very strong coffee and something like sweetened condensed milk -- the concoction left you 'vibrating' for hours! Coffee was introduced by the French in 1915 and now there is a thriving industry with high quality beans, Laos' main export commodity.
