Cub Lake, Rocky Mountains, Colorado, United States
Cub Lake, Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA 2005
From Estes Park, continue west on Hwy 36 to the Beaver Meadows entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. Just beyond the entrance, turn left and head south on Bear Lake Rd. for about 1.3 miles, then turn right (west) toward the Moraine Park Campground (the turnoff is just past a large stand of aspen trees, near the Moraine Park Visitor's Center). This road follows the north side of Moraine Park for about 1/2 mile to another junction. At this junction, turn left toward the Fern Falls And Fern Lake and Cub Lake Trailheads. There are no facilities at the parking lot, but there is a restroom at the Fern Lake parking lot. The trailhead parking lot is small and fills up quickly. If so, you can continue up the road to the Fern Lake parking lot, but this will add about 1 mile if you walk back to the Cub Lake Trail. Be advised that during the busy summer months, even the Fern Lake parking lot can fill up by midmorning.

Backpacking with Kids: Fern Lake Trailhead, Rocky Mountain National Park
This was a two night trip. Our hikes to our campsites were pretty easy, about 3 miles each day. We did do additional day hikes to explore the park more. As we do more backpacking trips with our kids, we realize they are capable of more and more... And they love it! Our advice for those just starting out: Be cautious about going on a backpacking trip with continuous rain. Here in Colorado, we do typically get afternoon storms, but it tends to be sunny otherwise. But avoid those 40 degree, constantly wet trips with the little ones. Remember, the goal is to have fun!

4 BEST DAY HIKES IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK | Everything You Need to Know [WILDLIFE & CAMPING]
Hiking and Camping in Rocky Mountain National Park was an absolutely incredible 4 day experience! Every day was a unique and inspiring new destination that left us at a complete loss for words! We had an absolute blast, and you will too if you follow our 4 day itinerary!
VIDEO TIME STAMPS:
0:00 - Introduction
1:16 - Day 1 - Hiking to Bierstadt Lake and a nature walk around Sprague Lake
2:19 - We saw a moose!!
5:15 - Day 2 - Hiking to Dream Lake and Emerald Lake
6:55 - Day 3 - Hiking to Bear Lake and Alberta Falls and a nature walk through Moraine Park
9:05 - Day 4 - Hiking a loop to Fern Lake, Fern Falls & Cub Lake and a nature walk through another part of Moraine Park!
10:45 - Bonus Hike up Lily Mountain just outside Rocky Mountain National Park!
Stop 1 - #bierstadtlake
Bierstadt Lake is about a 4 mile round-trip hike, about 1 mile and a half to the lake itself then a 1 mile loop around it. There are 2 separate trail to get to Bierstadt Lake, and both trails are excellent ways to achieve the goal: a morning exploring one of the most stunning lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park: Bierstadt Lake. Bierstadt Lake now holds a special place in our hearts, because it was the location where Zach saw his first moose!
Stop 2 - #spraguelake
Sprague Lake is more of a lakeside walk than a hike, but it is a MUST on any trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Sprague Lake is located very close to both Bierstadt Lake trailheads, so it makes sense to do in succession with that hike. The walk around the lake itself is easy, and let's just say that old saying 'All good things take time' was not written by someone who had been to Sprague Lake.
Stop 3 - #dreamlake
Dream Lake is located on the hike to Emerald Lake, at just about the halfway point. FYI, there is a lake called Nymph Lake on the route as well, but this one is much less noteworthy than the larger two. Dream Lake is the most beautiful lake we saw in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was incredible.
Stop 4 - #emeraldlake
Now, Emerald Lake MIGHT be prettier than dream lake in the heat of the summer. This 'Dream Lake was the prettiest lake we saw' business might be considered cheating, because a few lakes we hiked to were still frozen over. Emerald Lake was one of those lakes. Now, this lake was STILL beautiful, even covered in ice!
Stop 5 - #bearlake
Whatever you do, you MUST make a stop at Bear Lake. It'll be the easiest stop on the adventure, except for maybe Sprague Lake, and you will thank yourself for making the trip. Like most lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park, the best part of the view!
Stop 6 - #albertafalls
Located a little over a mile from Bear Lake, ALberta Falls is nuique from ANY OTHER of the hikes on our 4 day adventure hiking the Rockies. How so? Well, it is the only waterfall on the adventure!
Stop 7 - #morainepark
Moraine Park is FREAKING HUGE! There is no way to see it all in one day, unless that is the only thing you do that day. It is enormous AND spectacular, and we saw 57 elk there!
Stop 8 - #fernlake
Fern Lake itself is 3.8 miles from the Fern Lake trailhead, but you can take it as fast or slow as you care to. And even better? Along the way is Fern Falls, a cascasing waterfalls flowing almost as powerfully as Alberta Falls.
Stop 9 - #cublake
We ourselves did not spot any moose here at Cub Lake, however we heard from at least 4 or 5 people who went to Cub Lake on previous days who did see a moose hanging out. We must have went on the day that moose was intermittent fasting or something, because we didn't find them. However, that shouldn't take away from Cub Lake itself, because the lake was incredible. It was the bluest lake we saw without a doubt!

About Zach & Julie:
We first found out each other had a passion for travel when we started dating, and set off on our first trip together to sunny San Diego after only dating for a few short weeks! You really learn who someone is when you travel with them... Everything started off great with a delayed flight and lost baggage (the only reason Zach has broken Julie’s terrible overpacking habits and convinced her to become a backpacker gal) but we bonded the rest of the time over sunsets, bike rides, seafood and strong coffee. We were quickly hooked to the feeling of exploring a new place and found ourselves planning our next trip before returning home from the last.
Starting in January 2019, we purchased a 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan MV and are making the road our home! We spent 2 months converting our van (Winnie) into our home, with a TON of help from YouTube tutorials, and of course some help from Zach's handyman pops. Now every day is a new adventure!
Dom Nozzi hikes to Fern Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park
This is an excellent day hike. Without stopping, the hike takes 2 hrs from the TH to Fern Lake, and 1.5 hrs to get back to the TH. The first half of the trail is very easy. The second half is a steady, rocky incline. Dom hiked this on June 25, 2011. There is a 1380-foot elevation gain. Rocky Mountain National Park is 265,770 acres in size.

2013-07-06 Koeneman Lake (Fern Lake) Trail
Very nice 2.5mile roundtrip through some second growth fir & cedar forest, carpeted with sword ferns, salal, huckleberry. After the first 0.5 mile, the trail goes along a large marsh with lilypads. Then it crosses Rocky Creek on some logs. Finally, it reaches Koeneman Lake - beautiful!
It's on Wright Bliss Road Kp N, about 3 miles North of where that road intersects Elgin Clifton Road(Highway 320) on the Key Peninsula.

Best Hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park
There are so many beautiful hiking trails in the Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s hard to pick just one. So, we took the advice of locals working at an outdoor shop in the nearby town of Estes Park and chose the path to Sky Pond. The hike was just difficult enough that I felt like I got a great workout, but not so hard that I couldn’t do it.
Along the way stops included a photo op a the 30-foot Alberta Falls, walk around the Loch Vale, hike up to the larger Timberline Falls, stroll around Glass Lake, and lunch at Sky Pond.

What is becoming one of my favorite hikes - a 9.4 mile (one way) trip from Moraine Park to Bear Lake via Fern and Odessa Lakes - possible because of the park shuttle busses. Rocky Mountain National Park; June 15, 2019
We're heading to Rocky Mountain National Park to see the snow walls! Trail Ridge Road just opened up for the season last week, so there should be plenty of snow! We drive up US 34 through Loveland (instead of US 36 through Boulder and Lyons) so we can see the Big Thompson Canyon. While in Loveland, we stop at the visitor center to see the Lovelocks and walk around the lake. We cruise through Estes Park, then drive up and over Trail Ridge, down to the Granby side of the park. There we see deer, moose, and elk! Then Chuck accidentally steps on his glasses, so we have to head home. If you enjoyed this video, please like, comment, and/or subscribe!
