Spirit of Gulfport Florida
Excerpt, Gulfport City Council meeting 1/4/11, public record DVD, City of Gulfport, Florida
It appears that for the first time in the 100 year history of Gulfport, Florida, a nominee for the Spirit of Gulfport Award was rejected. The Spirit award is used to recognize contributions to the city ranging from the organization of a city-wide yard sale to decades of service to the city. The January 4, 2011 nomination of Al and Cindy Davis was made in response to their Clean Water Act lawsuit settlement with the EPA which has national implications.
Those who spoke in favor of the nomination were Councilmember David Hastings and Councilmember Dr. Jennifer Salmon, PhD. Those who rejected the nomination were Vice Mayor Michele King, Councilmember Sam Henderson and Mayor Mike Yakes.
The Environmental Protection Agency settlement agreement is addressed in the December 26, 2010: St. Petersburg Times article, Couple hold EPA's feet to the fire over U.S. water quality by Patti Ewald
