Fifty West Brewery plans major expansion
COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP (WKRC) -- A popular local craft brewery has unveiled a major expansion plan which includes more beer and more fun. Fifty West Brewery on Wooster Pike plans to take over the Hahana Beach property. They'll invest .5 million in improvements. The additional brewing facility will include bigger tanks to expand Fifty West's capacity to serve and supply local bars and restaurants. The owners plan to keep the sand volleyball courts from Hahana Beach and also plan to add a cyclery nearby to rent bikes. That area is slated to be near the Little Miami bike trail. The owners hope to have it open sometime next spring. Follow us on Twitter @Local12 and LIKE us on Facebook for updates!
Liquid Gold: More craft beer companies pouring into Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - They're pouring into the Greater Cincinnati area like fine-crafted beer. You might call it liquid gold.
The brewpub industry in Southwest Ohio is overflowing – it has increased eight-fold in the past eight years.
Guys like Dave Emery, who started in his garage, and is opening Big Ash Brewing in Anderson Township in early September, are a part of the movement.
Eight years ago we got 28 guys together, each chipped in 200 bucks and we bought some equipment and some ingredients and we all started brewing together,” says Emery.
Just down the Little Miami River in California, Ohio, you'll find another group of entrepreneurs pouring their hearts into a new brewpub, Dead Low Brewing, scheduled to open in late September.
We really wanted a community destination that could serve a wide variety of people,” says Dead Low Brewing’s Christine Hall.
The Ohio Craft Brewers Association reported in 2018 that craft brewers contributed a $967 million and 8,300 jobs to the Ohio economy. In 2011 there were 45 independent breweries in Ohio, now there are more than 300.
Greater Cincinnati is home to 55 of them.
Nationwide, Food & Wine reported the cities with the greatest thirst for breweries are Portland, Maine with 18 breweries per 50,000 people, Asheville, North Carolina, with 17 per 50,000 and Bend, Oregon with 16.
Cincinnati is 25th, with 6 breweries per 50,000 residents. You might think that those already in business in the area would be upset to see startups flooding the market. But that's not the case. They say the more beer the better.
We keep on the path we're on and hopefully you have people coming from all over the United States to come see this great thing we have going on in Cincinnati, said 50 West Brewing Company’s Bobby Slattery.
Slattery said it's not just about a creative menu and crafting beer, it's about creating a community.
Our bike shop, our running group, our canoeing and kayaking, our volleyball league. We like to come up with as many ways we can bring that community together and at the end of the day we hope you end up with a beer.
Jerry and Karen Weber agree. We caught up with them as they were heading into 50 West for lunch. They say they appreciate the local nature of the restaurant, and of course, the beer.
I love the beers. I love the variety,” says Karen. “And they're fresh,” adds Jerry.
Ohio is the fourth largest independent beer producer in the country, crafting 43 million gallons of beer in 2018, mostly fueled by our three biggest breweries - Samuel Adams, Great Lakes and Rhinegeist.
Cincinnati brewery plans $1.5 million expansion
Fifty West Brewery plans to spend $1.5 million on a new expansion. But the expansion isn’t just about beer. Subscribe to WLWT on YouTube now for more:

Alexandria Brewing Company opening April 21, extending Cincinnati's brewing boom south
Cincinnati's craft beer boom has already reached across the Ohio River into all Northern Kentucky's river cities, but the new Alexandria Brewing Company is stretching it further south. After a Kickstarter fundraising campaign in July 2016 and some property setbacks, the brewery has slated its opening day for April 21 with 16 brews on tap at 7926 Alexandria Pike. While serving in the Army, Head Brewer Andy Reynolds was able to “discover” beer while stationed in Germany. It opened his eyes to different styles and tastes.
Cincinnati State offering Brewing degree in the fall
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The brewing boom has reached new heights as Cincinnati State is offering a degree in brewing this fall. It's the first of its kind in the region.
The two-year associate degree is limited to 20 students, 21 and older. It was created in response to the massive growth in the brewing industry. Ohio is now the fourth largest producer of craft beer in the country, according to the Brewers Association. Cincinnati State launched a brewing sales and marketing certificate last year.
The new offerings are the brainchild of Carla Gesell-Streeter, a Cincinnati State professor and beer blogger. She's been working on the curriculum for about six years and the college just got formal approval for the program from the Ohio Department of Higher Education in April. She's researched similar programs elsewhere and talked to industry professionals. I said, 'Here's the curriculum I'm thinking about offering,' and the guy I was talking to at the time said, 'Whoever has this degree goes to the top of my hiring list, says Gesell-Streeter.
The program's curriculum will concentrate on brewing science, production, sensory evaluation, marketing and quality assurance and control. Our wonderful chemistry department is working with us to offer a special fundamentals of chemistry class where all the examples and all the experiments are going to be related to brewing, says Gesell-Streeter.
If you think about somebody who's coming out of a knowledge-based degree with the skills in brewing to be able to step on the brew deck and be even 30 days faster, just allows us to ramp [production] up faster, says Jake Rouse, co-founder and CEO of Braxton Brewing Company. It's just one of many breweries to expand production. Braxton Labs opened Tuesday evening. It's an innovative space where brewers can experiment with different drafts.
Cincinnati State educators want to keep class sizes small to ensure students get plenty of hands-on experience in the college's new brewing lab set to be installed in the Midwest Culinary Institute. Industry professionals say the new program will make the local brewing industry more competitive nationally.
Cincinnati Brewery Heritage Trail opens this Saturday

Driving through Downtown Cleveland, Ohio on Innerbelt and Dead Man's Curve in 4K
The nearly 90º turn on Interstate 90 near downtown Cleveland, officially called the Innerbelt Curve, at the point where the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway connects to the Innerbelt Freeway at a modified trumpet interchange just south of Burke Lakefront Airport. The advisory speed is 35 miles per hour (56 km/h), although the maximum speed limit is 50 miles per hour (80 km/h), as on adjacent sections of the Shoreway and Innerbelt. Location: 41.5173°N 81.6754°W
Dead Man's Curve was constructed as part of the Innerbelt project in 1959.At the time, Interstate 90 had been planned to continue westward on the Shoreway, connecting with its current location via the never-built Parma Freeway. It soon became apparent that the curve was too sharp for travel at typical Interstate speeds, and in 1965, the state lowered the speed limit from 50 mph (80 km/h) to 35 mph (56 km/h).Four years later,[not in citation given] authorities completed the first set of safety retrofits, which included banking the curve and installing rumble strips and large signs.
According to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), the crash rate on the Innerbelt (which includes Dead Man's Curve) is two to three times the regional average for urban freeways, despite the reduced speed limits on the roadway. The department has investigated ways of enhancing safety on the stretch, including a complete realignment of the roadway to reduce the degree of the curve.
