2011 Fred Jones Jr Gallery at OU in Norman Contemporary Opening Preview
The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is celebrating the
reinstallation of contemporary art with the help of some new friends. Austin band White Denim and guest speaker Bill Goldston, director of Universal Limited Art Editions New York, are just a few of the guests scheduled for the exhibition opening, which starts at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 4. Several events are planned for the evening, which is free and open to the public. As part of this fall's upcoming
opening of the new Stuart Wing and reopening of the newly renovated original building, the University of
Oklahoma's art museum is reinstalling works of contemporary and modern art from its permanent collection. The Sandy Bell Gallery, formerly the museum's location for such works, has been utilized as a rotating exhibition gallery since construction began in spring 2009.
Our excitement for October's grand opening of the Stuart Wing is so contagious, We can't wait to share it with the community, said Ghislain d'Humières, Director of the museum. We've packed so much into the June 4 weekend. If you've never visited the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, this will be an unforgettable event you will not want to miss.
To celebrate, the museum kicks off a weekend of events Friday, June 3 with live music from 5-9 p.m. by OU School of Music instructor Ricardo Coelho de Souza's
ensemble, The Eighth Street Trio.Saturday's event begins at 5 p.m. with a guest lecture by Goldston, who will
speak about artist Robert Rauschenberg's relationship with art collectors Sash and Mary Spencer. Mary Spencer recently gave the museum a collection of works by the same contemporary artist. Following the lecture, choreographers Derrick Minter and Lieneke Mous will present a special dance inspired by works in the exhibition and performed by OU School of Dance students during the
opening reception. At 7:30 p.m., Austin, Texas indie rockers White Denim start a live concert on the museum's front lawn, in collaboration with the Norman Music
Festival. The concert was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Norman Arts Council Hotel Tax Grant Program.
The opening weekend also serves as a sign-up
party for the Museum Association's newest level, the Metro Arts Circle (MAC). The MAC is geared towards 25-45-year-olds and will host exclusive parties throughout the year featuring art, networking, special
guests and more. After the concert, those are interested in joining the MAC invited to an after party at 9 p.m. at Blackbird Gastropub on Campus Corner.

Oklahoma City Sooner or Later Grand Opening
On March 1, 2011, Retro Metro OKC helped celebrate the opening of Oklahoma City Sooner or Later, a historic exhibit on the history of city government. The project was led by Retro Metro OKC founding members Frances Kersey and Pete White. Those assisting on the project included fellow members Steve Lackmeyer, Buddy Johnson and Catherine Montgomery. This exhibit also marked one of the last public appearances of City Hall historian Kathie Wrights, who sadly passed away a few short weeks later. Wrights helped research and write for this exhibit.
The exhibit spans more than 120 years of city government history, from the city's first unofficial mayor who was shot in a land dispute to the evolution of the present form of government.
The history is told through artifact displays, photos, documents and text, with topics including the birth of Oklahoma City, growth, equality, transparency, MAPS and the evolution to the Council-Manager form of government.
Oklahoma City! Sooner or Later... also examines the 122-year history of the Oklahoma City Fire Department. Objects on display include a badge collection on loan from the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum, a 1940s fire helmet, a cherry bomb fire extinguisher, a water cannon nozzle and a sand bucket used to extinguish fires in the 1920s.
One of the exhibit's focal points is a 1938 class A dress uniform once worn by deputy chief Hayden W. Marrs Sr., grandfather of former fire chief and current City councilman Gary Marrs, who is a third generation fire fighter.
Plans call for parts of the exhibit to rotate, featuring different aspects of City government history annually.
The self guided exhibit is free and open to the public year-round from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on the second floor of City Hall, 200 N Walker. For more information, contact the City Clerk's Office at 297-2391.
The Sooner or Later exhibit is made possible by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the We the People initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The City of Oklahoma City matched the grant funds and partnered with the Metropolitan Library System, Oklahoma Historical Society, Oklahoma Publishing Company, Oklahoma City Museum of Art and Retro Metro OKC.

We love to dive-in to the secrets of working with chocolate in traditional desserts and contemporary dishes as well as tasting, chocolate pairing, sensory evaluation and a special feature on chocolate drinks.

Kent State shootings
The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre) occurred at Kent State University in the US city of Kent, Ohio, and involved the shooting of unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on Monday, May 4, 1970. The guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.
Some of the students who were shot had been protesting against the Cambodian Campaign, which President Richard Nixon announced during a television address on April 30. Other students who were shot had been walking nearby or observing the protest from a distance.
