Watch Famous Ponies Swim in Chincoteague Island Tradition | National Geographic
These horses aren't taking a dip in the water just to cool off in the sweltering Virginia summer. They're the famous Chincoteague ponies of Assateague Island, and they're herded across the channel to Chincoteague Island every July by saltwater cowboys. Most of the foals are auctioned off the next day to raise money for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, which owns and manages the herd under a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A few foals designated as buybacks are donated to the fire company and returned to Assateague Island to replenish the herd and live in the wild for another year. The auction also helps maintain the feral horse population at around 150 on the Virginia side of Assateague Island.

Chincoteague surf fishing from the beach with light tackle gear. June 30, 2018
Fun quick morning fishing trip in Chincoteague, VA. I did a
little light tackle surf fishing. The tide was terrible. Almost
a dead low tide at sunrise. Water was slightly cooler than
yesterday evening. As you saw, i caught nothing big at all but
it was still fun.
All Croaker and 1 Spot. I was using a simple high low rig
with a 2 oz. pyramid sinker. Fish bites on top and blood worm on
bottom.
Bigger Croaker and Spot should be moving in soon. Thanks
for watching.

America's Wildest Places - Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska
Misty fjords, deep glacial valleys, and lofty mountains distinguish the 1.9 million-acre Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Kodiak is the Island of the Great Bear, the Kodiak brown bear that inhabits this wild, rugged Archipelago in the Gulf of Alaska, 252 miles south-west of Anchorage.
Today, the refuge has a global conservation role - to instil regard for bears, salmon, and other wildlife within the largest intact, pristine island ecosystem. Kodiak's diverse habitats encompass 117 salmon-bearing streams, 16 lakes, riparian wetlands, grasslands, shrub lands, spruce forest, tundra, and alpine meadows. Collectively these habitats sustain 3,000 bears, account for up to 30 million salmon caught by the Kodiak-based fishing fleet, support more than 400 breeding pairs of bald eagles, and provide essential migration and breeding habitat for another 250 species of fish, birds and mammals. Such natural abundance and spectacular scenery attracts thousands of visitors to the refuge annually.
WILDLIFE & HABITAT
Refuge terrain is mostly mountainous dissected by fiords and deep river valleys carved by ancient glaciers. Diverse refuge wildlands, ranging from Sitka spruce forest on Afognak Island to rolling tundra on the Aliulik Peninsula, help sustain brown bears, bald eagles, Sitka-black tailed deer, red fox, river otter, ermine, tundra vole, and little brown bats along with other wildlife.
Kodiak brown bears are a distinct subspecies from mainland brown bears; they have been isolated on the archipelago since the last ice age, about 12,000 years ago. A rich variety of vegetation, salmon, and berries provide ideal habitat for bears, and their population flourishes - estimated at about 3,000 bears within the boundaries of the Kodiak Refuge.
TRAVEL & TOURISM
Kodiak Refuge offers superb recreational opportunities—an ideal destination for wildlife viewing, hunting, hiking, kayaking, fishing, camping, and other types of outdoor adventures.
If you enjoy getting outdoors and looking for wildlife, Kodiak provides incredible opportunities for viewers and photographers! From birding to bear watching, visitors come from all over the world to enjoy observing species in their wild habitat.
Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge offers a number of environmental education programs for a variety of audiences. Is your school, youth, environmental or other group interested in learning more about the wildlife, plants, habitats and ecology of Kodiak? Contact or visit the refuge Visitor Center to check on program availability and reservation policies.
Popular fishing destinations such as the Karluk, Uganik, and Ayakulik Rivers offer world-class fishing opportunities for salmon, steelhead, and rainbow trout. Hunting is a popular activity on the refuge. As practiced on refuges, hunting, trapping and fishing do not pose a threat to wildlife populations, and in some instances are necessary for sound wildlife management.
The Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center is located at 402 Center Ave, Kodiak.
Getting there:
Visiting Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge can be the experience of a lifetime! Getting to the refuge is not as simple as jumping into a car or strapping on a pair of hiking boots. The refuge covers 1.9 million acres on Kodiak, Uganik, Ban, and Afognak islands, areas only accessible by floatplane or boat.
Before departing for a trip into the Refuge, visitors typically reach the island of Kodiak by air from Anchorage. Listings for lodging, tours, air charters and outfitters are available through the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce at (907) 486-7605.

Virginia Beach Crabbing
We monitored websites from the piers in the greater Virginia Beach area for months. Most advertised the best blue crabbing in ages. Not being local we flew to the East Coast to cash in on the action. Upon arrival they sang a different tune.
“It’s been so hot here the crabbing has been very slow,” the young man working the booth at the Virginia Beach Pier told us. “You should have been here a few weeks ago. I’ve seen a few crabs the last two weeks, but they’ve been real small.”
Local tackle shops echoed his view. Meanwhile, we were here and couldn’t have pitched a better scenario. Our purpose was to show how well Pautzke’s Blue Crab Fuel worked when conditions were challenging and the 99-degree temperatures and warm water proved worthy.
“You guys couldn’t have picked a worse week to crab,” he joked. “This heat is keeping action slow.”
While the heat and overpowering sun was nearly unbearable from the pier it served as the perfect vehicle for a true test. We grabbed our gear and bait chicken soaked in Blue Crab Fuel and walked 20 yards past the fish cleaning area. Before crabbing it was obvious the man was telling the truth. Of the few dozen people crabbing at 2pm few had any. Most told us it was packed with anglers and crabbers that morning, but most left due to the heat and slow action.
It didn’t talk long for crabbers to look at us peculiarly. As soon as we opened our cooler and tied the Blue Crab Fuel soaked chicken onto the crab trap it drew attention. Most others simply used chicken. Fortunately, a friend of ours presoaked the bait the night prior. The scent (Blue Crab Fuel) had a night to marinate the bait and create the scent trail we hoped for.
And, it worked.
Within a few minutes we started catching crabs, even though action was slow. Rather than the three or more at a time we expected we lured one, but it was far better than most others had experienced. Unfortunately, many were smaller than we hoped. Nevertheless, action was consistent over the three hours we crabbed.
In all, we caught two-dozen crabs, a few of which we had to released because they didn’t meet the 5.5-inch minimum. Meanwhile, we ended up overcoming the brutally slow action the experts anticipated and captured the footage filming this episode.
*Blue Crab Fuel is available at Walmart & Bass Pro Shops

SUMMARY
=======
Virginia ( (listen)), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States located between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains. Virginia is nicknamed the Old Dominion due to its status as the first English colonial possession established in mainland North America and Mother of Presidents because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2017 is over 8.4 million. The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution. In the American Civil War, Virginia's Secession Convention resolved to join the Confederacy, and Virginia's First Wheeling Convention resolved to remain in the Union; that led to the creation of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous law-making body in the New World. The state government was ranked most effective by the Pew Center on the States in both 2005 and 2008. It is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms. Virginia's economy has many sectors: agriculture in the Shenandoah Valley; federal agencies in Northern Virginia, including the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); and military facilities in Hampton Roads, the site of the region's main seaport.
