North Delhi’s Ridge area, today, a haven for walkers and wild life, has several interesting historical places tucked away in different corners. Some of these, including the Chauburja Mosque and the Guard house go back two centuries and have stood the test of time. You could be a nature lover, a history buff, a bird lover, you would find plenty to attract you to this patch of Delhi’s lungs.
Described as ‘bare, a stony furnace in the hot weather, and a mirror of heat for civilians and soldiers on either side’ by noted historian Percival Spear, the Flagstaff Tower, happens to be a prominent landmark in the Kamla Nehru Ridge. It is the highest point of the ridge and hence the best place to give you a sbird’s eye view of the surrounding area. The tower was built around 1828 by the British as a signal tower and sepoys were permanently stationed here to keep a watch on the northern expanse. At this point of time, a majority of Delhi’s population was contained within the precincts of the walled city. The monument played a major role during the uprising of 1857. The tower was renovated in the late 1990s and became more pedestrian friendly once this part of the ridge was made a motor-free zone.
Khooni Khan Jheel
Going by its dramatic name, this little pond should be an abode of the darker spirits. Instead, you will find ducks and cranes dipping into its cool waters and enjoying the shelter. Nevertheless, the Khooni Khan Jheel enjoys this very distinctive name owing to the role it played during the pre-1947 years. Since the North Delhi Ridge was an ideal place to provide cover to lurking enemies, it was also a place where intermittent battles and altercations broke out between a sepoy and an invader. Invariably, the unsuspecting waters of the pond became a dumping ground for many a body. The best way to go to the Jheel is from the St. Stephen’s side and not the Raj Pur Road entrance. Although the latter is a shorter way, it has many turns that require one to be well acquainted with the area. Some signages are also up at certain points to help one navigate.
Chauburja Mosque
To the south east of the Flagstaff Tower lies the Chauburja Mosque. This 14th century mosque was built by Feroze Shah Tughlaq. The mosque, a guard house and the remains of a 14th century baoli in the vicinity indicate that this area continued to play an important role even in the era preceding the colonia rule. The structure, however, is dilapidated and is in bad need of repair.

Mutiny Memorial, Victory Tower or Ajitgarh in Delhi
The Mutiny Memorial is a monument in New Delhi near Northern Ridge locally known as Ajitgarh or Victory tower. It was built by the British Army in 1862 in memory of British soldiers and natives of the Delhi Field Force killed during the First War of Indian Independence or Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. This octagonal tapering tower of red sandstone is situated just 200 meters away from the Ashoka Pillar.
It comprises of typically Victorian Gothic architecture with an octagonal perimeter. Around the building there are several plaques bearing names of 46 officer casualties killed and many more soldiers who died from diseases during the battle. While the tower is of an octagonal shape from the outside, it is circular from within and is raised on a base that is two-tiered. It has an ornamental façade with a staircase leading to the top. All around the tower there are many plaques on the walls mentioning the names and ranks of the soldiers who fought for the British in the War of 1857.
In the year 1972, on the 25th anniversary of India's Independence, a new plaque was added to the memorial which mentions that the 'enemy' as mentioned by the British were actually the freedom fighters and martyrs of India, who fought bravely against the repressive colonial rule in the First War of Indian Independence.

Like a mini fort, this is a spot of the European survivors of the Delhi massacres gathered in this spot 155 years ago 11 May 1857. A survivor of 1857 Florence Wagentrieber, described the scene, There was not a tree near the tower to shelter it from the hot sun... the heat was unbearable, and the children were stripped of every garment. The British Families, spent four months in the ridge area, amidst pitiable, arid area. The women and children occasionally watched the english dead bodies stuffed in bullock carts.

Delhi is a metropolitan region in India that includes the national capital city, New Delhi. With a population of 22 million in 2011, it is the world's second most populous city and the largest city in India in terms of area. The NCT and its urban region have been given the special status of National Capital Region (NCR) under the Constitution of India's 69th amendment act of 1991. The NCR includes the neighbouring cities of Baghpat, Gurgaon, Sonepat, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida and other nearby towns, and has nearly 22.2 million residents.
Although technically a federally administered union territory, the political administration of the NCT of Delhi today more closely resembles that of a state of India, with its own legislature, high court and an executive council of ministers headed by a Chief Minister. New Delhi is jointly administered by the federal government of India and the local government of Delhi, and is the capital of the NCT of Delhi.
Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and the modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region. This is why Delhi is sometimes called the City of cities.
Delhi was the site of ancient Indraprastha, the mythical capital of the Pandavas during the Mahabharata. Delhi re-emerged as a major political, cultural and commercial city along the trade routes between northwest India and the Gangetic plain during the Delhi sultanates.
In AD 1639, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built a new walled city named Shahjahanabad, in Delhi, which served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1649 until the Rebellion of 1857. Shahjahanabad today is Old Delhi. The greater part of Old Delhi is still confined within the space of Shah Jahān's walls, and several gates built during his rule—the Kashmiri Gate, the Delhi Gate, the Turkman Gate, and the Ajmeri Gate—still stand. In 1911 the British determined to shift the capital of India from Calcutta (Kolkata) to Delhi, and a three-member committee was formed to plan the construction of the new administrative center. The key architect on the committee was Sir Edwin Lutyens; it was he who gave shape to the city. The British moved to the partially built New Delhi in 1912, and construction was completed in 1931. A new capital city, New Delhi, was built to the south of the old city during the 1920s. When the British left India in 1947, New Delhi became its national capital and seat of government.
