BHTV: Broadway-level Entertainment at the Flat Rock Playhouse
The Flat Rock Playhouse brings Broadway-quality productions to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. With over 98,000 patrons annually, the Flat Rock Playhouse draws visitors from all over to the State Theater of North Carolina, for its many plays, musical, and concerts.
BHTV: Traditional and Modern Music Thrive in Western North Carolina:
BHTV: The Asheville and Hendersonville Symphonies Offer High-Caliber Performances:
BHTV: Supporting Local Arts with HandMade In America:
“I feel so fortunate to live in Hendersonville, because I'm able to attend the Flat Rock Playhouse. The talent and artistic directing and acting is just stupendous,” says Vickie Leeds, season ticket holder.
“When you think of Western North Carolina, you don't think ‘Broadway,’ professional-level entertainment, live entertainment. And we have it, right here. It's just this amazing jewel, sort of tucked away in the mountains. And we have so much pride in bringing those shows to the people of this area,” says Lisa Bryant, artistic director at the Flat Rock Playhouse.
Just south of Hendersonville, lies the small, picturesque town of Flat Rock, North Carolina. Its population is just over 3,000, but every year, thousands more come to visit the Carl Sandburg Home, explore Little Rainbow Row and the Village of Flat Rock's shops and cafés, and of course, take in a local show at the Flat Rock Playhouse.
Nearby Hendersonville's welcoming Main Street is a great place to shop and dine before a show. Many theater patrons make a weekend of their stay in order to explore all the area has to offer. With a vibrant arts scene, historic charm, and a friendly community, Flat Rock offers so many ways to Live the Life You Choose.
“I've been going to the Playhouse for 15 years,” saya Leeds. “And each year the shows get better and better, and funnier and funnier. I think for a theater that's in a small town such as Hendersonville, the quality is superb.
“In 2010, we opened our downtown theater space, Playhouse Downtown, on Main Street, and we love it,” says Bryant. “We love being actually on Main Street and being downtown and among all the stores and amazing restaurants that continue to pop up downtown—that are really tasty and delicious—and great shopping. To be right there in the middle of all of that, and be available to folks, is an exciting partnership.”
“We also do our Music on the Rock series down there, which is a series of concerts throughout the year that are a lot of fun as well, for our music lovers in the community, of which there are many.” says Bryant. “We really are here for the community. We want to partner with the community so that together we're creating an enviable life for families and our children and our businesses. Everybody benefits.”

Flat Rock, called The Little Charleston of the Mountains, was an oasis during the 19th century as affluent plantation owners from the Low Country in South Carolina built English-style summer estates in the vicinity to escape the heat.

Video Promo for Catfish Moon at Flat Rock Playhouse
Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina, will continue its 2015 season with the heartwarmingly nostalgic, Catfish Moon, which will run from October 29th through November 15th at the Flat Rock Playhouse Downtown.
Skipping school, skinny dipping, kissing your first girl and, of course, fishing off of the pier are all rites of passage for childhood best friends Curley, Gordon and Frog. But “life” happens and time has driven a wedge between these now middle-aged men who have come together for one last overnight fishing trip to patch old wounds brought about by anger, jealousy and betrayal. Despite these circumstances, Catfish Moon is a bodacious, southern fried bro-mance of a comedy that is sure to delight.
Penned by Rock Hill, South Carolina native Laddy Sartin, Catfish Moon is a popular play in the Carolinas due to its earnest portrayal of southern characters. Originally commissioned by Charlotte Repertory Theatre in 1996, and performed at the Flat Rock Playhouse Mainstage in 1997, Catfish Moon hilariously and thoughtfully explores themes of adolescence, ambition and midlife crises.
The Flat Rock Playhouse production of Catfish Moon stars Michael MacCauley, Mark Rowe and Scott Treadway as Curley, Gordon and Frog, the three childhood best friends reconnecting after going down very different paths in life. Also featured in the role of Curley’s sister and Frog’s ex-wife Betty is Debra Capps.
Catfish Moon will be helmed by longtime Vagabond Dane Whitlock in his Flat Rock Playhouse directorial debut. Joining Whitlock on the production team are Dennis C. Maulden, CJ Barnwell, Ashli Arnold, Kurt Conway and Paul Feraldi as the Scenic, Lighting, Costume, Sound and Properties designers respectively. Connie Silver will serve as Stage Manager.
Catfish Moon is presented by Downtown Series Sponsor Rug and Home.

Robin Farquhar - Genius of Flat Rock Playhouse - NC Theater History - Depression Education
Remembrance with reverence for Robin Farquhar, genius director of Flat Rock Playhouse, pillar of North Carolina theatre history, recipient of NCTC's Marian A. Smith Distinguished Career Award (posthumous), friend and confidant in the business, and true mentor of thousands. CAVEAT: Serious subject matter - Mental health education & suicide awareness and prevention.
Members of an exclusive club where few consult, on a cold Spring night in 1996 we eulogized publicly and excruciatingly personally the suicide of North Carolina Arts Council's Theatre Arts Director George Parides. Theater producers would rather chew glass and piss rusty nails than gather in a room together, but we did it - white-knuckled. Later that same night, Robin reassured my spoken testimonial choices, a voice in a phone, saying softly: No bro, if I thought you dropped trou', I'd tell you...
The gift of understanding, he gave ... and I just wanted to give something back, gift to gift. (Michael Picasso, also by Ian Hunter*, whose music is used here interpretively with gratitude, for purposes of commentary and education.)
12 years later, the phone no longer rang, and I had no idea of Robin's struggle. The only disgrace is that this growing epidemic of suicidal depression remains in shadow, and its contemporary social ignorance and stigma will be remembered in medical history as barbaric.
2012: Over 1 million people commit suicide in the world each year - 83,333 a month - 19,231 a week - 2,740 a day - 114 an hour - 1 every 40 seconds - a 60% increase in the last 45 years. Now among the 3 leading causes of death in some countries, ages 15-44 - 2nd in those 10-24. 36,000 per year in the USA (1 every 15 minutes) - 10th leading cause of death (more than homicide) - 4th for adults between 18 and 65.
A gun is not a cry for help. It is the choice of self-deliverance for 60% of the 36,000 per year, of which 4 out of 5 are men.
Meditation, prayer and other belief systems are no more a cure for the biochemical illness of suicidal depression than for pancreatic cancer. Clinical depression is not normal passing sadness, nor is it attitude.
Decision-makers, is silence better for business? Millions are diagnosed and treated effectively; millions more are not. Millions more dollars are spent on pharmaceutical marketing than on research and development.
1) Fund assertively 21st century research, development, education, prevention, treatment and cure.
2) Be vigilant of friends. Listen carefully to the young and to the aging.
3) Know it is okay to ask, and it is okay not to understand.
4) Know it is not okay to condemn, and the absence of condemnation does not mean that you condone.
Robin was an education advocate, a rocker at heart, and I feel him standing over my shoulder saying: THAT'S the way it happened, I CHOSE as I did with my visonary life - don't waste my PUBLIC statement. George Parides would have said: No, we're not gonna sweep it under the carpet ... we're gonna TALK about it!
Now Robin talks with Robroy, founder of this true American Theater Dynasty, begun as Vagabond Players. The Father and the Son and the Playhouse. The holy trinity. Robroy started it; Robin took it further than anyone could have imagined.
They did not own it. They gave it their entire lives. Two generations of total dedication, public service, courage, brilliance and sacrifice - from the 1930's until November 2008. Like George Bailey, Robin took over in 1982 and gave 26 years' leadership. There was no one waiting in the wings for Act Three.
Online video tributes to Robin's magnificent LIFE achievement are invited and welcomed. The following link directs you to brief footage of the vibrant Robin:

This live version of Dead Man Walkin' (EastEnders) is by the legendary former leader of Mott The Hoople, rocker artist survivor Ian Hunter, born in 1939 - music & original lyrics from the album Rant (2001) - an artist more vital and relevant than ever, offering songs of hope and encouragement at age 70, incl Win It All from Man Overboard, released 2009.

Flat Rock Playhouse Money Withheld
Henderson County Commissioners vote to withhold 0,000 from the cash-strapped Flat Rock Playhouse. Commissioners appropriated 00,000 to support the state theater of North Carolina. They've paid out 0,000 so far, but they'll need to see proof that playhouse managers have a plan to avoid bankruptcy before paying out the next 0,000 contribution. Playhouse managers say losing 0,000 out of their budget would could be disastrous to the non-profit's plan to at least break even this year. Commissioners plan to discuss the issue in their meeting December 3rd. They could take a second vote on whether to withhold the county's payment.
