Kangaroo Island is just off the mainland of South Australia, below Adelaide. It's known for its diverse wildlife and nature reserves, including Flinders Chase National Park and its kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and many bird species.
At Cape du Couedic, the park's southwestern point, sit the huge, striking Remarkable Rocks granite formations. Nearby, Admirals Arch is a rock bridge with an adjacent fur-seal colony.

Ravine fire burning on Kangaroo Island ‘virtually unstoppable’ as major towns only safe place.
Ravine fire burning on Kangaroo Island ‘virtually unstoppable’ as major towns only safe place left on island. A massive fire burning in a national park on Kangaroo Island is “virtually unstoppable” and threatening the entire island.
The damage from the Ravine bushfire has exceeded 15,000ha as 150 Country Fire Service personnel battled to contain the fire before the arrival of a gusty cool change in the evening. The bushfire emergency warning zone was expanded to include the coastal town of Vivonne Bay which was then evacuated.
As conditions deteriorated further the fire danger area was expanded to cover the entire island.
The town of Parndana in the middle of the island is also being evacuated with police declaring the major towns of Kingscote and Penneshaw as the only safe place to be
Spot fires were already occurring in Vivonne Bay, kilometres ahead of the fire front.
There are reports that the Flinders Chase visitors centre and Southern Ocean Lodge have been affected by the fire.
Staff at the Lodge were reportedly seeking shelter in a fire bunker as the fire raged overhead.
Residents and CFS personnel are counting the minutes until a cool change arrives around midnight which is forecast to push the fire back on itself.
The change is expected to push smoke from the fires north over Adelaide, the Mount Lofty Ranges and as far west as the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas.
Country Fire Service chief officer Mark Jones said that he would be “astounded” if there were not homes lost in the fire.
There is an emergency warning message in place for the Ravine fire which has forced the evacuation of holiday parks and visitor centres.
A cool change is likely to push the fire east for several hours before swinging back onto itself in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The Ravine fire is predicted to burn for several days.
There are 150 CFS personnel on the island fighting the fire with more to be sent in the coming days.
A second fire burning in Duncan in the centre of the island broke containment after 50km/h winds buffeted the fire ground.
The fire threatened the township of Parndana as well as rural properties.
Resources were relocated from the Ravine fire to contain the fire.
“Bushfire index predictions have greatly exceeded those predicted for today,” Mr Jones said.
“These conditions caused the Duncan fire to break containment and head easterly direction, thankfully aerial bombardment and hard work from our fire fighters on the ground have got that fire contained.
“We will get as many resources over there as we can bearing in mind we have several other fires burning.
“It is pleasing that resources on the ground are having a good impact but the conditions as well as the severity, and size of the fire means that the fire is virtually unstoppable at the current time.”
Mr Jones said 412 CFS personnel were in the field battling 25 fires across the state.
Meanwhile, CFS units have been tackling a hay fire south of Mount Torrens, after strong winds caused a flare-up of the Cudlee Creek fire.
The fire on Onkaparinga Valley Rd is causing large amounts of smoke to be visible over the area.
There are fears a forecast wind change later on Friday will whip up other blazes across SA.
A large fire on the Eyre Peninsula is threatening vital power infrastructure.
Residents of the Eyre Peninsula are being warned to prepare for a sustained blackout if the fire causes the power lines to trip.
Department of Energy and Mining engineer Reinhard Struve said that Port Lincoln’s power generators could kick in but rural residents should start charging their phones in case of a blackout.
Amazing footage shows a smoke and fire “tornado” at the uncontrolled Ravine fire, which started near the Playford Hwy and West End Hwy. It is burning in a westerly and southerly direction towards the coast.
Volatile winds ahead of a cool change this evening are sending the fire front in multiple different directions.
There are spot fires ahead of control lines to the south while a new fire front has separated from the fire ground and jumped the Playford Highway to the south west.

Australia, Kangaroo Island, Wild and Untamed
First 5 minutes of a 1/2 hr TV documentary, from the series Australia's Natural Wonders.
Kangaroo Island is famous for its untamed wildlife species and natural beauty. With a surface of 4500 sq km, the island has very few feral species allowing animal and bird populations to thrive. We can see Koalas dozing in lofty eucalypts, sea lions basking in white sandy beaches or rocky cliffs, black swans on shimmering lagoons, abundant bird life and kangaroos and wallabies day and night… everywhere. The famous Seal Bay, Kelly Hills Cave, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, the New Zealand Fur-seal at Cape du Couedic, the wildlife in Flinders Chase National Park, American River, the north coast and Cape Willoughby with the oldest lighthouse is South Australia. Kangaroos, Wallabies, Cape Barren geese among many wildlife species. Note: I own all the footage used for this video as well as all the music rights (Royalty Free) of the pieces used on the audio band, I never use but RF own music.
