Witnesses to Double Execution in Arkansas Say Inmates May Have Suffered Botched, Painful Death
- We speak with The Guardian’s chief reporter Ed Pilkington about the shocking double execution Arkansas carried out Monday night, marking the first time in nearly 17 years that any state has killed two people on the same day. At 7:20 p.m. local time, 52-year-old Jack Harold Jones was pronounced dead in the death chamber at the Cummins Unit state prison. Infirmary workers had spent more than 45 minutes unsuccessfully trying to put a central line into his neck. According to a court filing, during Jones’s execution, he was moving his lips and gulping for air, which suggests he continued to be conscious during the lethal injection. Lawyers for the second man, Marcel Williams, filed a last-minute appeal for a stay of execution following Jones’s killing, arguing Williams could also experience a botched, painful death. A district court judge initially granted a temporary stay of Williams’s execution but then allowed the execution to go forward. Williams was pronounced dead at 10:33 p.m. The executions came after legal challenges reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which rejected a stay for Williams. The only justice to dissent in this ruling was Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The last double execution carried out in the United States was in 2000 in Texas.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A K-Mart spokesperson announces their decision to stop the sale of handgun ammunition in their stores nationwide.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Filmmaker, author, and political activist Michael Moore trains his satirical eye on America's obsession with guns and violence in his third feature-length documentary, which gets its title from a pair of loosely related incidents. On April 20, 1999, shortly before they began their infamous killing spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold attended their favorite class, a no-credit bowling course held at a bowling alley near the school, the same bowling alley which would become the scene of a robbery and triple homicide two years later. While pondering these events, Moore humorously considers the link between random violence and the game of ten pins; along the way, Moore calls on the Michigan Militia (and gets to know some of the models for their Militia Babes calendar); spends some time with James Nichols, brother of Oklahoma City bombing accomplice Terry Nichols; visits K-Mart's corporate offices with two teenagers injured in the Columbine massacre as they ask the retail chain to stop selling bullets for handguns; investigates the media's role in the American climate of fear and anger; compares crime statistics in the United States with those of Canada (which, despite higher unemployment and a larger number of guns per capita, manages to rack up a small fraction of the homicides committed in the United States), and questions actor and National Rifle Association president Charlton Heston regarding his appearance at a pro-gun rally held in Littleton a few days after the Columbine massacre, and a similar rally in Flint, MI, after a six-year-old boy killed a classmate with a gun he took from his uncle's house. Bowling for Columbine received its first public screening at the 2002 Ann Arbor Film Festival; the film's official premiere took place a few months later at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Truth Behind Those $1 Detroit Homes
Downtown Detroit is seeing a revitalization of sorts sparked by Dan Gilbert's $1 billion investment in the area. Since 2010, Gilbert's investment has created an estimated 6,500 jobs in downtown, and, as a result, it's nearly impossible to find a vacant apartment as residential occupancy rates reached as high as 99.4% for the downtown area.
But what about the rest of the city? You can buy a bunch of homes outside of downtown Detroit for under $500 and some are even listed at just $1.
Problem is: these prices are incredibly misleading. The homes are in abysmal condition and there are few city services in and around these neighborhoods.
Detroit realtor John Lewis took us to the Brightmoor neighborhood to show us what these $1 Detroit homes are really like.

Enrique Marquez, the former friend and neighbor of San Bernardino gunman Syed Rizwan Farook, was arrested on Thursday and is charged with conspiring with Farook to provide material support to terrorism in 2011 and 2012, making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of firearms, and immigration fraud, announced the U.S. Department of Justice.
Marquez and Farook have reportedly known each other since 2005. A neighbor, Lorena Agurre, told the Daily Mail that the two bonded over their passion for cars. Marquez reportedly converted to Islam in 2007.
The two allegedly planned to attack the library or cafeteria at Riverside Community College, where both men had been students, with pipe bombs and guns in 2011, according to the affidavit accompanying the charges. The two also planned to attack a section of State Route 91 that was not near any exits during afternoon rush hour. They had planned to throw pipe bombs onto the freeway before shooting people in stopped cars.
Marquez bought the two AR15 rifles that were used in the December 2 attack carried out by Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, according to the FBI. Marquez told investigators he agreed to purchase the weapons because Farook believed he wouldn’t pass the required background check.
In 2012, the two continued to plan attacks, but backed off after announcement was made of arrests made in unrelated terrorism cases in November 2012, according to the affidavit.
Marquez also entered a sham marriage with the sister of Farook’s brother’s wife so that she could obtain legal status in the United States, and was paid $200 each month, according to a statement released by the Department of Justice.
Marquez has cooperated with investigators and provided information since his arrest, officials have said. He told investigators that he didn’t know of the plans for the San Bernardino attack and also checked himself into a mental health facility.
According to the complaint, Marquez allegedly made a 911 call on December 3. He told the operator that Farook was behind the San Bernardino attack, and that the guns used in the assault were weapons he himself gave to Farook for safe storage.
If charged, Marquez could face up to 35 years in prison. He made an initial court appearance on Thursday and was appointed a lawyer.
