The Big Lap, Sailing Around Australia - Ep.01
After much preparation, our trip sailing the Lagoon 52 'Paradise' for 12 months around Australia has finally begun. Nathalie and I are crew helping the skipper and owners John and Tania in what promises to be an epic trip. My hope is to create a real, living account of what it is really like to sail around Australia, creating a journal of all the memorable places and interesting people we will no doubt meet along the way.
After leaving Sydney, it didn't take long before settled into a groove of pushing up the NSW coast, mostly motoring with a southerly to begin with. We had an interesting bar crossing into Port Macquarie, nothing too radical but we'd prefer it a little less hair-raising. We had friends filming from the headland as we came in as well as vision from the boat. Check it out at 3:30.
We then had 2 days of motoring into a northerly wind and current before reaching Yamba and a break for a few days as a southerly change blew through. Nice to feel the country town vibe. From there we pushed onto Ballina and then the Gold Coast for the haul-out and some final maintenance before we set off for real on The Big Lap, starting 6th May. It's interesting watching the boat being taken out of the water on the travel lift.
Apologies in advance for the video quality. It's my first attempt and using an iPhone is not ideal. Gotta get rid of that wind noise and learn how to add backing music properly!

Familiarisation cruise in our Baysport 620 Offshore,
s02e35
After several months of looking for a larger boat, we have finally purchased a Baysport 620 Offshore model.
This is a short video of our first trip out in it. My wife loves boating and the water in general but she is not into fishing or crabbing, other than cooking and helping to eat what I catch. With that in mind along with the fact that this was to be her first time on the water in this boat, I made this a pleasure cruise rather than a fishing expedition.
It was one of those rare days where the weather was perfect AND I didn't have to work. The boat behaved perfectly and my wife found that she had no trouble sleeping on a small boat. A perfect day on the bay.

Treasures of Ningaloo Reef::
From Exmouth down to Coral Bay on the Ningaloo Reef there’s a wealth of treasures to show you this week. Hugging the shore for 240 km down the coast of Western Australia, World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef is the world’s largest fringing reef. As soon as we head out from Exmouth with fishing charter, True Blue Bonefish, and Skipper, Brett Wolf, we find shallow reef studded with coral and bommies. The crystal clear water reveals the rich sea life all around. It’s remarkable that we manage to keep a feisty GT on the line with all the sharp coral about. Later, south of Exmouth, in deeper water out from Coral Bay, I’m with Skipper, Bernie Vale, of Mahi Mahi Fishing Charters. First we catch and tag a small sailfish, then battle with Red Emperors of the reef and joust with Gold Spot Trevally. Back down on the Shoalhaven River of New South Wales, whether out with my mate Hugh in the Hobie, or the Frontier 590, the misty mornings are lovely for chasing more homely Australian Bass on cicada lures.
Destination WA - Mackerel Islands
Many of the islands off of the Pilbara coast are rich in history, biological diversity and situated in one of the most spectacular coastal areas you will ever see. In this segment Trevor takes us to the Mackerel Islands, a forty-five minute boat trip from Onslow.

BEACH SHACK CAMPING - Red Bluff Ep.68 - Road Trip Australia
We pulled into the homestead where we got some information and maps on the station, then headed up to ‘Red Bluff’. Our expectations of Red Bluff were quite high, as alot of people had recommended it to us.
Well we’re here to say... we LOVED it!
Arriving at reception, we asked the caretaker what could he offer us. As we knew it was off peak and could see alot of empty sites. He offered us a beach shack for only an extra $5 per head a night. As apposed to $15 per head for pure bush/beach camping, we had a nice lovely shack.
Of course we inspected it before agreeing but it was quite cosy and he assured us, it was the only shack which had lights. Oh la la fancy. We settled into our shack for 3 nights. It had 2 double beds plus a bunk bed, communal picnic table, some shelves, fire pit and its own private access to the beach. Oh plus lights of course.
There were 4 windows which opened up on the shack, which made it very breezy during the day, and provided great views out onto the ocean. We admired the view from our outside bench seat, where we ate alot of our meals from. Plus when the wind blew up, we could all sit around inside and play some cards.
Red Bluff
So whats here to do you may ask? Red Bluff is known for a popular surfing break. It has some really cool caves to explore. A large ridge to climb up, and if your lucky you might get a few bars of telstra. We saw countless goats, a handful of whales, plenty of fish etc. You can literally walk both directions for miles .
Red Bluff even has a small store, which sells smoothies, toasties and surfboards. Just have to check the times on the blackboard. As we were off-peak, it was only open for 1 hour during the day, which was fair enough. Why stay open with such little crowds. There was also plenty of drop toilets around, so you don’t have to be self contained.
Tip - Make sure you stock up on drinking water in Carnarvon, there is none in Quobba.
