Pensacola Beach Grand Islands National Seashore and Peg Leg Pete's Florida
Gulf Islands National Seashore offers recreation opportunities and preserves natural and historic resources along the Gulf of Mexico barrier islands of Florida and Mississippi. The protected regions include mainland areas and parts of seven islands. Some islands along the Alabama coast were originally considered for inclusion, but as of 2009, none is part of the National Seashore.
Gulf Islands National Seashore, near Pensacola
The color of the sand in the region is exceptionally white, as seen in this 1957 photo at Pensacola Beach, Florida, adjacent to the protected area designated in 1971.
The Florida District of the seashore features offshore barrier islands with sparkling white quartz sand beaches (along miles of undeveloped land), historic fortifications, and nature trails. Mainland features near Pensacola, Florida, include the Naval Live Oaks Reservation, beaches, and military forts. All Florida areas are accessible by automobile.
The Mississippi District of the seashore features natural beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, islands accessible only by boat, bayous, nature trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds. The Davis Bayou Area is the only portion of the National Seashore in Mississippi that is accessible by automobile. Petit Bois, Horn, East Ship, West Ship, and Cat islands are accessible only by boat. The 4,080 acres (16.5 km2) Gulf Islands Wilderness offers special protection, within the seashore, to parts of Petit Bois Island and Horn Island, Mississippi.
Considerable damage to public infrastructure occurred as a result of storms during the 2004 and 2005 Atlantic hurricane seasons. In subsequent years, infrastructure was fully repaired. All roadways, parking areas, campgrounds, and visitor centers have been repaired and are fully operational. A few trails and associated boardwalks and dune crossovers were still under repair as of late 2010, especially near the Fort Pickens campground.
Pensacola Beach is an unincorporated community located on Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island, in Escambia County, Florida, United States. It is situated south of Pensacola (and Gulf Breeze connected via bridges spanning to the Fairpoint Peninsula and then to the island) in the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 2,738. Pensacola Beach occupies land bound by a 1947 deed from the United States Department of Interior that it be administered in the public interest by the county or leased, but never disposed; its businesses and residents are thus long-term leaseholders and not property owners.]
Pensacola Beach is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Escambia County and Santa Rosa counties.
Gulf Islands National Seashore Opal Beach
A brisk morning walk on a beautiful powdery sugar white quartz crystal sand beach in the Gulf Islands National Seashore on Santa Rosa Island at the Opal Beach day use area. See the beautiful crystal clear waters of the emerald green Gulf of Mexico and listen to the sounds as the swells flattened by the north wind sends their graceful waves to gently caress the beach. Watch and listen to the shore birds, gulls and pelicans as they start their daily routines in this beautiful but sometime harsh environment. Look out on the horizon and you might see a ship on the way to a distant port or maybe a local yacht or fishing boat out to enjoy the day. Maybe you will see someone out on a paddle board, kayak, sunfish or other watercraft for a morning workout. If you look closely into the clear waters as you walk you might spot a pod of bottlenose porpoises catching their breakfast, or maybe see any number of the other bountiful aquatic life that inhabits the waters near the shore. It doesn't get much better than this! ENJOY !

Splashing Around in the Clear Waters of Florida
Offering a teensy, short little video that captures the entire Florida portion of my vacation in a nutshell. I’d gone 2000 miles in a week all over the Southern states to join up with extended family in the Pensacola / Navarre area of Florida, and clearly it was time to relax, splash around, and just have fun. raventurous.com
