Artesian Springs, WI wetland USA, March, 2016
Last month, I was talking to a Floridian who told me that his drinking water came from an “underground river” that originated in Kentucky. I was surprised to hear that, and later discovered that the existence of “underground rivers” was - and evidently still is - a belief held by some people. In reality however, “underground rivers” don’t exist. What does exist, at various depths beneath the earth’s surface, are layers of sand, gravel, and/or porous rock where groundwater is collected, held (like, for example, the way a sponge holds water) and slowly moves towards areas of lower elevations and/or under pressure. This saturated substrate is called an “aquifer”. Groundwater may be intercepted by wells; it also discharges to lakes, rivers, wetlands, etc. If you’re lucky enough, you may sometime see a spring or artesian groundwater, which is a naturally occurring discharge of groundwater rising above the land surface due to the forces of pressure acting upon it in a confined aquifer. I considered myself lucky…saw over 40 of these little devils in one spot while walking some property in WI last week!
