1965 Palm Sunday Comstock Park, MI Tornado (Documentary)
On Palm Sunday April 11, 1965; an outbreak of 47 tornadoes ravaged portions of Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. 271 people were killed, with over 1,500 individuals seriously injured. Millions of dollars in property damage resulted. This is the deadliest tornado outbreak to affect the Great Lakes region (to date), of which also resulted in the creation of the volunteer SKYWARN storm spotter network.
This 18-minute documentary focuses on a single significant tornado event to affect Kent County, Michigan that evening. Told through the words, memories and imagery from survivors of the storm. The violent (EF)-4 tornado killed five, injured 150, and resulted in estimated property damages to nearly $15 million across Standale and Comstock Park, Michigan. The tornado took a similar path to the violent (EF)-5 cyclical tornado family that struck across Allegan, Ottawa, Kent and Montcalm Counties on April 3, 1956. For information on that specific tornado, please refer to the 50th anniversary documentary The West Michigan Tornadoes produced in 2006 (also found on this channel).
Photographs or motion picture film of the physical tornado in progress across Kent County on Palm Sunday, April 11, 1965 have never been located, nor indicated to the producers per this production. Many photographs and films were taken primarily across Indiana, Southwest Lower Michigan (Branch Co.) and northwestern Ohio (at Toledo). A year-long historical search by researchers Ernie Ostuno and Blake Naftel resulted in hundreds of new damage photographs (color/b&w), but no material including the actual tornado (which struck close to dusk). In it's place, a artistic interpretation from eyewitness accounts has been created and included. The tornado photographs utilized within this documentary were photographed primarily in Rossville, Indiana that very evening by Donald Cox. Nearly every tornado on April 11, 1965 took on similar shape, coloration and characteristics, hence the inclusion within this short film.
This film was produced in tandem with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Alpine Township Historical Society in April 2015 for the 50th anniversary of the event. Produced by Blake Naftel and Ernie Ostuno. Narration by Robert Hartig. ©2015 Three Reel Films, All Rights Reserved.
Luthy Botanical Garden
This video showcases the Luthy Botanical Garden in Peoria, IL. I had the opportunity to shoot some beautiful footage at a unique time in the season between Winter and Spring, which gave the entire place an almost eerie, yet beautiful atmosphere. In this video, I tried to capture that unique atmosphere (and my favorite parts about this garden are the gnomes hidden everywhere).
Thank you for watching! Here is a link to the Peoria Park District's website about the Luthy Botanical Garden:
