Hachiman-bori Canal is the pride and joy of Omihachiman City. The canal is five-kilometers long and was used in the past to not only transport people and merchandises but also used to divide the city by class and caste.
It was in the late 16th Century that the Toyotomi noble family wanted to develop Omihachiman City by connecting it to Lake Biwa, and de facto made Omihachiman City into a huge trading post between Tokyo and Kyoto.
