Fort Davis National Historic Site, Fort Davis, Texas
A panoramic view of Fort Davis, which was established on the San Antonio-El Paso Road between 1854 and 1891, 400 miles west-north-west of San Antonio. The video is taken from a scenic overlook in the low-lying volcanic mountains that hem in the rear of Fort Davis, panning from right to left. First the hospital ward comes into view, then the officer's quarters, parade ground, and enlisted men's barracks. Only some of the structures have been reconstructed, others left in an arrested state of decay or just outlines on the ground. The modern-day town of Fort Davis (about a thousand people) is just beyond. Towards the end of the video, you can faintly hear the noontime bugle call. The location is now a national historic site, and also one of the best preserved among the dozens of forts and camps formed throughout the state in the nineteenth century.
Fort Davis National Historic Site, Texas Part 1
We visited Fort Davis National Historic Site and discovered a lot of history in West Texas. There are a lot of buildings there that show the various layouts and phases the post went through. This is a 2 part series and both are long, but so worth watching if you are into history as I am. I hope you enjoy Part 1 and come back to see Part 2 upon its release.

ABOUT:
A key post in the defense system of west Texas, Fort Davis played a major role in the history of the Southwest from 1854 to 1891. Troops protected emigrants, freighters, mail coaches and travelers on the San Antonio to El Paso road. Today it is one of the best remaining examples of a frontier military post and a vivid reminder of the significant role played by the military in the settlement and development of the western frontier. That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

Fort Davis National Historic Site, Texas Part 2
This is Part 2 of our walk through of Fort Davis National Historic Site. We see a lot of the beginnings and ending of the fort in this video. At the very end I ran out of batteries in my audio recorder and my gimbal. So the last minutes were recorderd on my 5D Mark 3. So the stabilization is not there and the audio is not very good. But I know you will enjoy the first 98% that is good.

The opening of the West is the most colorful and romanticized period in American history, and the forts of the Western frontier were silent witnesses to this history. From the Northern Plains to the Southwest, from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, on the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, they were forerunners of settlement, bastions of refuge, centers of trade, and outposts of diplomatic and martial relations with indigenous peoples and foreign colonial powers.
Fort Smith, Fort Riley, Fort Stephen Kearny, Fort Laramie, Fort Bridger, Sutter's Fort, Fort Phil Kearny, Fort Fetterman, Fort Abraham Lincoln, Fort Union Trading Post, Fort Buford, Fort Larned, Fort Hays, Bent's Fort, Fort Garland, Fort Union, Fort Davis, Fort Craig, Fort Selden, Fort Bowie, Fort Apache
FORTS OF THE FRONTIER WEST tells the stories of these lonely and legendary posts, the people who lived there, and the events that that shaped the history of the American West.

We used the Davis Mountains State Park as a base camp to explore Fort Davis National Historic Site, the McDonald Observatory, and the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop. We highly recommend all three.
The show-stopper happened at the Davis Mountains State Park. We saw so many bright, colorful birds at the Interpretive center, and got our first lightning shots ever!
