Georgetown Grand Cayman Cruise Port Area Tour (4K)
See what the cruise port area of Georgetown, Grand Cayman looks like after taking a tender boat ride from the ship. Cruise ships tender here because the waters are too shallow to dock.
The Grand Cayman Cruise Port landing area has several zones- the South Terminal, the North Terminal & Royal Watler Terminal. There were lots of shopping abound as well as you walk down Church St which becomes Harbour Dr- the Bayshore Mall, Turtle Bay, Margaritaville, Tortuga Duty Free, Churchill's Cigars, plus various shops at Royal Watler.
There was a small beach at the port area, though we did not see anyone on there, so it likely is off limits. The industrial port area near Grand Cayman Port Authority provides a nice view of all the cruise ships anchored. We observed the Carnival sensation, Carnival Dream, MSC Opera, Star Clipper Star Flier, the Celebrity Equinox and our ship the MS Eurodam.
The walk itself had some historical locations such as Hog Sty Bay, the Grand Cayman National Museum and Fort George. You can actually spend the whole day in this area shopping, people-watching, and enjoying the beautiful scenery.
This was from our December 2017 cruise aboard the Holland America Eurodam.

Pirates pillage, party in Cayman
Scores of privateers and marauders flooded the streets of downtown George Town in search of plunder and booty Saturday in the marquee event of Grand Cayman’s annual Pirates Week celebration.
Thousands of spectators stood lining Harbour Drive for the sun-drenched spectacle, dressing their best to match the bearded renegades and torn-bodiced wenches that came ashore.
The costumed pirates made a boisterous entrance, firing cannons and filling the air with acrid white smoke before making their landing at George Town harbor. From there, they engaged in a mock battle with British regulars and marched their captives to a waiting pirate ship float for the parade.
Cheered on by a partying public that had arrived at least an hour before the landing, the pirate float – pulled by a Clean Gas pickup truck – led the procession down Harbour Drive and turned right on Fort Street.
The area later played host to a costume competition and a street dance.
The weekend had kicked off with a concert and fireworks on Friday, and it continued with a national song competition and another street-dancing concert on Saturday night.
Sunday culminated in the To Hell and Back 10K Run/Walk, the turtle release on Spotts Beach and the “Soaked” Wet Fete on Harbour Drive.
More than 1,000 people turned up for the turtle release, and the Tourism Attraction Board teamed up with Plastic Free Cayman to stage a pair of beach cleanups at Barkers. Cayman residents pitched in to tidy up Barkers Saturday morning, and another cleanup involving tourists happened Monday.
A few hours before the landing, Harbour Drive was the scene for the Pirates Pooch Parade. Mr. Chubbs, a pirate hat-wearing bulldog accompanied by Olivia Lomas, won the prize for best costume.

Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes in Caribbean
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Tuesday about 80 miles from Jamaica, shaking people in the Caribbean and as far away as Miami.
A tsunami of 0.4 feet was recorded in the Cayman Islands at George Town, but no tsunami was observed at Port Royal, Jamaica, or Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
A tsunami threat alert was lifted Tuesday afternoon, a few hours after the quake.
Alec Pultr, who lives in Ogier, Grand Cayman, said it wasn't the first earthquake he's experienced but it was the biggest by far.
We were simply working and things started to sway, he told CNN.
As the swaying and shaking became more violent, most people started to run; the ones who stayed behind got under their desks.

George Town, the Capital of Penang
Georgetown is the capital of the island and state of Penang, on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia. Named after Britain's King George III, George Town is located on the north-east corner of Penang Island. The Georgetown metropolitan has a population of 1,250,000 the second largest metropolitan in Malaysia by population.
George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light, a trader for the British East India Company, as base for the company in the Malay States. He obtained the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah and built Fort Cornwallis on the north-eastern corner of the island. The fort became the nexus of a growing trading post and the island's population reached 12,000 by 1804. The town was built on swampy land that had to be cleared of vegetation, levelled and filled.
Today, the town is known for its well-preserved colonial core, with original shophouses dating from the 19th century to the 1930s still surviving, together with their trades of old. Street markets and hawkers continue to be a part of daily life, and the atmosphere is often likened to that of Singapore back in the 1960s and 1970s.
George Town was voted as one of the best cities in Asia by Asiaweek, ranked 6th in 1998 and 9th in 2000. More recently, George Town has improved a notch to rank as the 9th most liveable city in Asia. The town truly springs to life in the evenings, when most of the locals would head to the nearby street hawkers to have their meals and sometimes, a couple of drinks.
In 2008, George Town was, together with Malacca, formally inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is officially recognized as having a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.
