Fort Patiko, also known as Baker's Fort, was a military fort built by Samuel Baker in Patiko, Uganda. Construction of the fort was completed on December 25, 1872.After Baker left in 1888, the fort was used by Emin Pasha and Charles Gordon while they served as Governor of the Equatorial Province of the British Uganda Protectorate. A plaque on the remaining wall of a grain storage building in the center of the fort reads “Fatiko 1872 -88, founded by Sir Samuel Baker, occupied by Emin and Gordon” . Ruins of the fort remain in Ajulu parish, Patiko sub-county, Aswa County, Gulu district. The site is open to the public subject to a fee levied by the subcounty.

Fort Patiko potential untapped

The historical slave trade fort Named after Sir Samuel Baker in northern Uganda needs overall if it is to continue serving its purpose.
The former administrative centre of the then Lower Nile Equatorial Province that was occupied by Arab traders no longer attract tourists due to its eerie mood and status.
According to one of the caretakers, the guns could have gone silent for normal business to flourish but Patiko is not making any many.

Once prominent traditional secondary schools in Acholi sub region could soon be out of business due to the deteriorating numbers of students and debts surrounding the schools.
Take for instance Sir Samuel baker school and Gulu high school and Kitgum high school in Kitgum district that once had close to 2000 students, now only have about 230 amid poor performance.
Leaders blame it on the LRA war, high school fees, poverty and emergence of aggressive private schools plus lack of government intervention.

Around 400 people work at Kiwoko Hospital. About 40% of the staff are 'non-medical'. This video is a tribute to ALL staff at Kiwoko Hospital who use their skills and abilities every day to serve the people of their community and to help God make sick people well.
All 400 staff, and many other supporters, are included in the hospital's motto; 'We treat, Jesus heals'.
