Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria, Egypt
Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria, Egypt - Egypt Tourism
Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria, Egypt - Travel to Egypt and let Connolly Cove give you the right plans to follow.
There are different cities in Egypt, some are worth the visit and some could be placed later in the list. Alexandria, Egypt, is considered the largest city in Egypt coming directly after Cairo and this pretty much sums up why you should place it on your plan list.
There are different things to do in Alexandria, Egypt, which are divided between historical places to visit as well as those walks which you should go through the streets and by the sea; you will enjoy the good breeze, believe us.
Your next trip to Egypt should include visiting the city of Alexandria and getting the chance to see Qaitbay Citadel which will also give you the chance to enjoy a good view of the sea with a weather you have never witnessed before.
Being one of the historical places to visit in Egypt, we have to mention that Qaitbay Citadel of Alexandria is now in the same place where the lighthouse of Alexandria used to be but which was destroyed by several earthquakes that took the whole thing down after being one of the seven wonders of the world.
The history of Qaitbay Citadel is long since different characters helped in its existence; starting from building the citadel and ending with the renovations that were done to the whole place until the 20th century to become what we are seeing at this very moment.
The best thing about Qaitbay Citadel of Alexandria is that you will enjoy the idea of seeing the actual real place from where the archers stood in the old days in order to defend Alexandria. The structure of the whole place is actually what will take the breath away; you will have to pay attention to the inside as well as the ceiling of the whole area.
On the way to the citadel, within 2 minutes walk, there is an aquarium museum which carries different species and which will be mostly liked by the kids; will not take longer then 20 minutes in it, and just in front of the citadel entrance, there is another museum for fossilized creatures including the skeleton of a whale.
Planning a trip to this place should be on the list, but you should never spend more than a few hours there and pass by these other two museums in the same day in order not to keep coming back to the same area and lose time instead of seeing other parts and historical areas of Alexandria.
Qaitbay citadel Alexandria is placed in the most visible location of Alexandria city, making it an attraction for those who want to see the best out of this place.
Qaitbay citadel opening hours are from 8 AM till 5 PM everyday and that is the reason why it is always considered better to go in the evening where the weather will be always better and it won't be much crowded.
The plus point for those visiting Egypt from around the world is that the prices are considered low for them at this point and thus they could get the chance to visit different places and do several things without having a lot of money. Qaitbay citadel entrance fees for the Egyptians is about 15 EGP and a little bit more for the non-Egyptians which might reach now 35 EGP.
This 15th century defensive fortress is located in As Sayalah Sharq, Qesm Al Gomrok, Alexandria Governorate. You could spend the whole day walking inside and outside of this castle and you could even sit there where you will be considered sitting on the sea, but it is considered better to watch out and make sure you are not wasting the whole day sitting there.
There are different fish restaurants there where you could have a proper and delicious meal and enjoy the Egyptian way of cooking it. You could also rent a boat - and you could bargain about the price - but always make sure that life vests are there and make sure that you are feeling safe with that person who will be with you on the boat.
There are a lot of things to do in Alexandria and with the good weather of this city, you will definitely enjoy every single detail of your trip, you just have to take the needed precautions and make sure you are bargaining whenever needed in order not to get easily robbed - because that's how people manage to get things done there.
Qaitbay Citadel is among the old places to visit in Egypt which will get you out of Cairo and let you see something that is not related to the capital city.

Qaitbay Fort - Alexandria Egypt (Historical places in Egypt)
The Citadel of Qaitbay is a 15th-century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean sea coast, in Alexandria, Egypt. It was established in 1477 AD (882 AH) by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay. The Citadel is situated on the eastern side of the northern tip of Pharos Island at the mouth of the Eastern Harbour.
The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria is considered one of the most important defensive strongholds, not only in Egypt, but also along the Mediterranean Sea coast. It formulated an important part of the fortification system of Alexandria in the 15th century AD.
The Citadel is situated at the entrance of the eastern harbour on the eastern point of the Pharos Island. It was erected on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse continued to function until the time of the Arab conquest, then several disasters occurred and the shape of the lighthouse was changed to some extent, but it still continued to function. Restoration began in the period of Ahmed Ibn Tulun (about 880 AD). During the 11th century an earthquake occurred, causing damage to the octagonal part. The bottom survived, but it could only serve as a watchtower, and a small mosque was built on the top. In the 14th century there was a very destructive earthquake and the whole building was completely destroyed.
The founder of the Citadel of Qaitbay is a Circassian Sultan named Al-Ashraf Abou Anasr Saif El-Din Qaitbay El-Jerkasy Al-Zahiry (1468–1496 AD) who was born about 1423 AD (826 AH). He was a Mamluke who had come to Egypt as a young man, less than 20 years old. Bought by Al-Ashraf Bersbay, he remained among his attendants until Al-Ashraf Bersbay died. Then the Sultan Djaqmaq bought Qaitbay, and later gave him his freedom. Qaitbay then went on to occupy various posts. He became the Chief of the Army (Atabec Al-Askar) during the rule of the Sultan Tamar bugha. When the Sultan was dethroned, Qaitbay was appointed as a Sultan who was titled Almalek Al-Ashraf on Monday 26th Ragab, 872 AH (1468 AD). He was one of the most important and prominent Mameluke Sultans, ruling for about 29 years. He was a brave king, who tried to initiate a new era with the Ottomans by exchanging embassies and gifts. He was fond of travel and made many prominent journeys.

Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria, Egypt
Qaitbay Citadel is a sight to behold and would be a perfect movie set for a great action movie about the Crusades. The Citadel was built on the site of Ancient Pharos of Alexandria. The Pharos lighthouse was once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and guided sailors into the harbor.
Destroyed by an earthquake, the Qaitbay Citadel was rebuilt by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay who fortified the place to use as coastal defense against the Turks. Built in 1477, Ahmed began walking us through, up and down, all the while relating Qaitbay's very interesting history.

Al-Ashraf Kajtbaj (actually: Al-Ashraf Sajf ad-Din Kajtbaj) (Arabic - قايتباي) (born around 1416/1418, died on August 8, 1496 in Cairo) - Mamluk Sultan from the Burda's dynasty [ a], prevailing in the years 1468-1496. He was the last strong ruler of Mamluk Egypt, he faced the Ottoman armies, and his armies twice defeated the invading Turkish armies, carrying Kajtbay to the most important ruler in the contemporary world of Islam. He was also a staunch builder who erected hundreds of monumental buildings throughout the country. He was famous for mercy and piety. He strengthened and consolidated the power of the Mamluks, and at the same time he cared for the well-being of the subordinate Egyptian population. However, the Sultan during his long reign failed to draw Egypt out of the permanent social and economic crisis and to carry out reforms modernizing the state and the army. Shortly after his death, the Mamluk Sultanate was conquered by the much better armed and more numerous armies of the Ottoman Turks. Al-Aszraf Kajtbaj (właściwie: Al-Aszraf Sajf ad-Din Kajtbaj) (arab. – قايتباي) (ur. ok. 1416/1418, zm. 8 sierpnia 1496 w Kairze) – sułtan mamelucki z „dynastii” Burdżytów[a], panujący w latach 1468–1496. Słynął z miłosierdzia i pobożności. Wzmocnił i skonsolidował władzę mameluków, zarazem dbał też o pomyślność podległej ludności egipskiej. Jednakże sułtan w ciągu swego długiego panowania nie zdołał wyciągnąć Egiptu z permanentnego wówczas kryzysu społeczno-gospodarczego ani przeprowadzić reform unowocześniających państwo i armię. Wkrótce po jego śmierci sułtanat mameluków został podbity przez znacznie lepiej uzbrojone i liczniejsze armie Turków osmańskich.

The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque has been a part of this city since 1775.
It is named in honor of a scholarly saint, upon whose tomb the mosque is built.
There have been several renovations, since its completion, to keep the mosque pristine.
The exterior of the tall minarets and domes are decorated with incredibly fine, intricate details.
Alterations were made to the mosque to allow a separate entrance for women to be able to worship within these holy walls.
