ALASKA DAY IN SITKA - 2018
Is was in Sitka that Russia transferred the territory of Alaska into the hands of the USA on October 18th, 1867. Here that event is commemorated and celebrated in a variety of ways, including but not limited to, a smoked salmon competition, a memorial service, a pie sale, a parade, a SAR (Search and Rescue) Demonstration, a brew fest with Baranof Island Brewing Company, and a bag piper performance all of which took place on Alaska Day 2018 and were captured in this video. Enjoy!

The journey to Sitka alaska is like no other port I can think of for sheer grandeaur , before you arrive to the beautiful Sitka, sailing in the footsteps of Captain Cook . Cruising through Alaska’s Inside Passage and passing close to the extinct volcano of Mount Edgecumbe named by Captain Cook in 1778. An unexpected benefit of Alaska Cruise For Dummies, Sitka faces the Gulf of Alaska, and is on Baronof Island .
Sitka , Alaska .One of the highlights of an Alaska Cruise , Sitka once the capital of Russian America and formerly known as New Archangel while under Russian Rule.
Sitka Alaska was initially settled by the Tlingit Indians.
The Kiksadi Clan of the Tlingit Indians chose what is now called Baranof Island as their home, establishing a community at what is present-day Sitka. The Tlingits lived undisturbed until 1799, when Russian explorers arrived in Alaska and Alexander Baranof, Manager of the Russian-American Company, built a fort a few miles to the north. After a series of clashes, the Tlingits attacked and destroyed the Russian outpost in 1802. But Baranof retaliated and soon pushed the natives from the area. The Russians renamed the settlement New Archangel. The Russian Orthodox Church spread its influence into the area and built fortress-like structures on a hilltop overlooking the shoreline.
Rich wildlife resources in Alaska allowed the Russian-American Company to flourish - for a time it was the most profitable fur trader in the world. .
In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from the Russians for $7.2 million. The transfer ceremony occurred in Sitka Alaska . Today, the Sitka culture is a blend of Tlingit, Russian and American. Certainly a unexpected benefit of Alaska Cruises, and no of Alaska Cruise Holiday for Dummies.

Bears in Sitka, Alaska | 14 Miles
Comment question: What places in your community do you feel uncertain about? What would prompt you to go there and learn about it first hand?
It’s winter and the bears of Baranof Island are hibernating! Here is a slice of summer at the Fortress of Bears, a non-profit with a mission of rescuing and caring for orphaned bears. When the sanctuary was first proposed, a number of Sitkans were upset about the idea of wild animals in captivity. But now it is a main tourist attraction, with more than 20,000 visitors a year.
Note: As many locals know, Balloo, one of beloved bears featured in this episode passed away this past October.

Admiralty Island, the seventh largest island in the United States, host the largest concentration of brown bears in the world.
Alaska's Admiralty Island is home to an estimated 1800 brown bears, the largest concentration of bears in the world. Nearly 100 miles long and 20 miles wide, it is half the size of Yellowstone National Park, yet it sustains four times more grizzlies. The native Tlingít people call this island Kootznoowoo, meaning Fortress of the Bears. It is a place where bears depend on fish, fish depend on trees, and the trees depend on fish-eating bears to spread the nitrogen rich bodies of salmon throughout the forest. Everything depends on the annual salmon run. When a change in the weather keeps the salmon from arriving, the entire ecosystem is affected. Enter a world shaped by bears, trees, and salmon, and explores the delicate balance of their interconnected lives.
Fortress of the Bears premieres on PBS Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 8/7c (check local listings) and is part of the 30th season of the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen in association with WNET.ORG for PBS. Major support provided by Canon U.S.A. Inc.
