Meride (pronounced: Méride) was first mentioned in a document in 852. It is located at an altitude of 578 m above sea level between the Monte Pravello (1,015 m above sea level) and the Monte San Giorgio (1,097 m above sea level). The municipality belongs to the sub-district of Riva San Vitale of the Ticino district of Mendrisio.
Slightly secluded and above the village lies the church San Silvestro with frescos by Francesco Antonio Giorgioli (1655-1725) dating back to 1690. The original Romanic church was rebuilt completely during the 16th century. The simple parish church San Rocco lies in the village center at the Piazza Mastri di Meride and was built in the 17th century.
The paleontological museum Museo dei Fossili exhibits 200-m.-years-old marine fossils from the area of the nearby Monte San Giorgio. They come from the time when the Mendrisiotto only partly protruded from the ocean.
all'interno del museo.
The country of Besano with the Civic Museum of Fossils is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site for its rich paleontological property exspecially from the Middle Triassic.
A special thanks to Diego Sala for the authorization of filming inside the museum.

SUMMARY
=======
Monte San Giorgio is a wooded mountain (1,097 m above sea level) of the Lugano Prealps, overlooking Lake Lugano in Switzerland. It lies in the southern part of the canton of Ticino, between the municipalities of Brusino Arsizio, Riva San Vitale and Meride. Monte San Giorgio became a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2003, because it is the single best known record of marine life in the Middle Triassic period, and records important remains of life on land as well. The Italian region west of Poncione d'Arzo (Porto Ceresio) was added as an extension to the World Heritage Site in 2010.
In Meride is the Museum of fossils from Monte San Giorgio, designed by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta.
