-- About this video --
Today we are leaving the Fox Glacier area on the West Coast of New Zealand but not without checking out the Fox Glacier Terminal Face.
This is a free way to see the New Zealand glaciers, and it's only a 30-minute drive from the Franz Josef Glacier. So we drive up the Fox Glacier Valley to the start of the Fox Glacier Valley Walk.
The Fox Glacier walk is about 40 minutes one way down the every-changing glacier valley. It follows the Fox River then along a valley side until it reaches a viewpoint overlooking the Fox Glacier Terminal Face along with waterfalls.
After our Fox Glacier hike, we return the same way and continue our journey down the West Coast stopping at Hunts Beach along the way to try and find greenstone. Then we arrive at our final destination in Haast.
So what do you think of the free Fox Glacier Valley Walk? Is this a New Zealand Walk you would add to your must-do list? Let us know!

Fox Trail: Terminal Face Walk, Fox Glacier, South Westland World Heritage Area, New Zealand
This is an informative and leisurely trip to the dynamic face of Fox glacier in New Zealand. It is here that the Fox River emerges from the ice and where ice collapses are often heard and seen. This trip is for people with limited time or for those who would find the walks on the glacier too strenuous.
Although you will not walk on the glacier, your guide will take you to visit the final resting place of ice that has traveled 12 kilometres from the base of the Southern Alps, all the way to the river valley floor. Your guide may take you closer to the ice than the unguided public (if it is safe to do so at the time) and you will have the opportunity to learn the role of the Fox Glacier in shaping its environment.
This two hour trip is reasonably easy going. About one and a half hours is spent walking over terrain at a speed that almost anyone can manage. There is a strong focus on providing you with quality interpretation so you can learn about the glacier and the surrounding environment.
It is sometimes possible to view the cave at the terminal face of the ice from which the Fox River emerges.

Fox Glacier - Chancellor Dome Heli Trek - Fox Glacier Guiding 2018
This has to be one of New Zealand’s finest days in the mountains.
It starts with a thrilling flight by helicopter, over magnificent rainforest and ice pinnacles, into the valley of the Fox Glacier. Your helipad is at 1,270 metres (4,000 feet) on Chancellor Shelf, just above historic Chancellor Hut. In season, this area is rich in flowering alpine plants and the mountain antelope, Chamois, can frequently be seen.
From Chancellor Hut, the route ascends through snowgrass basins to a spot where a glorious view of Mt Tasman appears. Here your guide will organise you for a safe ascent of the gully. This gully gives access to a broad ridge and a beautiful snow shelf below the summit of Chancellor Dome. A highlight is the final ascent to the summit at 2,004 metres (6,526 feet). This climb, takes you to the point that affords the best view of the Southern Alps highest peaks and the magnificent snowfields that feed the Fox Glacier. To the west, you see the surf of the Tasman Sea breaking on Gillespies Beach.
After a relaxing lunch you descend to the hut, and fly down the glacier back to Fox Glacier township. As an introduction to mountaineering this trip cannot be surpassed.
Please note: This is a mountain trip with helicopter access, not a helihike on the glacier and is weather dependant.

-- About this video --
Today we join Fox Glacier Guiding for a heli-hike onto the Fox Glacier. Yes, there is another glacier on the New Zealand West Coast other than the Franz Josef Glacier and as we are about to find out, exploring the Fox Glacier is an awesome New Zealand adventure.
After gearing up with Fox Glacier Guiding for our Fox Glacier helicopter flight, we fly over the stunning Fox Glacier Valley and land on top of the glacier itself. Here, we watch the helicopter fly away then meet our two guides who are going to be taking us around this magnificent New Zealand glacier.
After putting on some crampons we follow our guides around this incredible landscape. We are the only ones of the glacier so it’s a real personal experience. We see waterfalls, learn about the glacier, step over crevasses and, our favourite, we crawl through ice cave after ice cave.
There are so many ice caves on the Fox Glacier which makes it a true glacier exploration tour. We have a blast the whole way around this Fox Glacier Tour.
After landing back in the Fox Glacier township, we treat ourselves to a beer.
So what do you think of heli-hiking on Fox Glacier? Is this a New Zealand glacier activity you would add to your New Zealand bucket list?

Exploring New Zealand #10: Fox Glacier Walk
It is basically the only thing you can do if you go to Fox: go to the Fox Glacier for a half-day walk or a full-day walk. You can also go to Fox Glacier by helicopter, but where is the fun of it? So we did a Fox Trot with the people of Fox Glacier Tours!
In the next Exploring New Zealand video we go to Queenstown, which is the last part of our journey in New Zealand: youtube.com/diogok
