Visit to The FOXFIRE MUSEUM and HERITAGE CENTER
Visit The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center in Mountain City (right outside Clayton), Georgia, USA, for a look back at part of this nation's heritage and a look forward at the skills we can use to become more self-sufficient.
T.J. Smith, Foxfire's Executive Director, takes time to talk with Heritage Ways about the history, purpose, impact and future of Foxfire the magazine, books, and living museum. We certainly thank him, as well as Jessica, Bridgett and Sharon for their time and attention to our visit.
Please visit Foxfire in person as well as here...

Foxfire Museum....Mountain City, Ga
The Foxfire Museum
Camping in North Georgia afforded us the opportunity to visit this great place.
Foxfire Museum
This is a video created by the GPB affiliate radio station, WPPR 88.3FM with Candice at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA. This is an interview with the Museum Curator of the Foxfire Museum in Rabun County in Clayton, Georgia.
Basics of Wool Spinning at Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center
Sharon Grist takes the time to teach Little Miss Homemaker a bit about carding, spinning , and then plying wool. We certainly appreciate her sharing years of expertise with us.
With her permission and that of Foxfire museum, we share this video and a bit of information about Foxfire's Village Weaver.
Sharon's love for weaving began at age eleven when her family visited
Southern Highlands Handicraft Guild Fair in Asheville, NC. I saw a handweaving demonstration. I was mesmerized. From then on I knew that weaving would have a place in my life.
And what a place it is! Mrs. Sharon Grist is surely a valuable asset to the Foxfire Museum in Mountain City, GA, right there in the Appalachian Blue Ridge Mountains.
Sharon apprenticed at Rabun Gap Crafts in 1978 and 1979. She opened her own professional studio in 1981. Preferring a diverse career, she divides her time among teaching, demonstrating and exhibiting, as well as designing and producing garments, home accessories and one-of-a-kind pieces for professionals and individuals.
We at Heritage Ways appreciate Sharon's love for this beautiful craft. In her own words, In our fast-paced, high tech society it is necessary for each of us to enjoy something simple and beautiful and created by hand. Handwoven goods bring pleasure to the eye, to the touch, and to the spirit because each piece is created individually.....Weaving is my way of sharing beauty and joy-and my love for life.
Please check out the museum here....

Places to see in ( Sevierville - USA )
Places to see in ( Sevierville - USA )
Sevierville is a city in east Tennessee. To the south, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has forest trails and waterfalls. A statue of country singer Dolly Parton, a Sevierville native, is downtown by the 1896 beaux arts–style courthouse. The Tennessee Museum of Aviation has vintage aircraft, including 2 rare P-47 Thunderbolts. To the east, the Forbidden Caverns are vast underground caves with calcite formations.
In the town's eastern section, the Little Pigeon River is formed by the confluence of its East Fork and Middle Fork, both of which flow down from their sources high in the Great Smoky Mountains. Five miles (8 km) downstream to the west, the Little Pigeon absorbs its West Fork before turning north and flowing for another five miles (8 km) to its mouth along the French Broad River. Sevierville is centered on the stretch of land between these two junctions of the East and Middle Fork and the West Fork, known traditionally as Forks-of-the-Pigeon or Forks-of-the-River.
Situated in an area where the Foothills of the Great Smokies give way to the Tennessee Valley, Sevierville has long acted as a nexus between Knoxville to the north and the Appalachian towns in the mountains to the south. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located approximately ten miles south of Sevierville.
Like other towns situated along the Parkway in Sevier County, Sevierville has reaped the benefits of the burgeoning tourism industry brought on by the development of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As of 2004, nearly 50 percent of businesses based in Sevierville were linked to tourism. For example, there are more than 2,000 hotel and motel rooms in the city that generate more than $500,000 in hotel-motel tax revenues each year.

Following the discovery of gold in North Carolina, an enterprising Cornish engineer named Charles McCulloch came to the gold fields of Jamestown, North Carolina to build a gold refinery. He brought with him the architecture of England and the latest technological development, the steam engine. McCulloch Gold Mill was built in 1832 and operated many years as an integral part of the history of Gold Mining in the State and in the Nation.

Black Rock Mountain State Park - GA.
12 August, 2015
Black Rock Mountain State Park encompasses some of the most outstanding country in Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Located astride the Eastern Continental divide at an altitude of 3,640 feet, it is the highest elevation state park in Georgia. Numerous scenic overlooks provide spectacular 80 mile vistas of the Southern Appalacians, and several hiking trails lead visitors past colorful wildflowers, sparkling streams, small waterfalls and lush forests.
We picked this park for it's high elevation and dark night time skies for best viewing of the Perseid meteor shower which peaked on the night we were there. Getting up at 2 AM and watching the skies for about 45 minutes, we saw a total of 6 shooting stars.
This park is very quiet and peaceful and very beautiful. However, it's not particularily big rig friendly as the roads leading up to it and the park roads themselves are rather narrow, tight and twisty. Small pop-ups, tents and small trailers are very well accomodated with flat level sites, water & electric hook-ups, dump station, picnic tables, fire-rings and believe it or not, cable TV !
