Franeker
Franeker is one of the eleven historical cities of the province Friesland and capital of the municipality of Franekeradeel. It is located about 20 km west of Leeuwarden on the Van Harinxma Canal. As of 1 January 2006, it had 12,996 inhabitants. The famous Eisinga Planetarium from around the year 1800 is located in the city. The Planetarium is an orrery built by a local wool carder to explain a conjunction of the planets and to help mitigate local fears of what would happen during the planets' alignment. Built in Eisinga's own living room, it is one of the oldest operating orreries in the world
Franeker was founded around 800 as a Carolingian stronghold. The name probably derives from Froon-acker, meaning country of the king; the oldest street in the city is still called Froonacker. Beginning around the 11th century, Franeker developed into the administrative center Westergoa.
Franeker received city rights in 1374. In the 15th century, Albert, Duke of Saxony established himself in Franeker. The city appeared for a time to be growing into the primary city of Friesland, but was eventually overshadowed in this role by Leeuwarden.
During the period of the Dutch Revolt, the town sided early on with William I.
From 1585 to 1811, the city housed the University of Franeker, which was the second Protestant university in the Netherlands. It was closed shortly after the incorporation of the Kingdom of Holland into the French Empire. A successor institution, the Rijksatheneum, was founded in 1815, but in 1847 it, too, closed.
The Krystkongres (Christmas Congress), usually held in Franeker, is the annual convention for Frisian students living in Dutch student towns.
Since 1852 Franeker is the home of the PC (nl). the most important tournament in Frisian handball. (Kaatsen)
Franeker is a regular host of the Frisian draughts competitions.
Being one of the Frisian cities, Franeker is also on the route of the 200 kilometres (120 mi) Elfstedentocht (Eleven-cities Tour), an endurance skating event held at irregular intervals depending on weather conditions.

NEDERLAND, Elfstedentocht Franeker 1997 / THE NETHERLANDS, Eleven Cities Tour Franeker 1997
NEDERLAND, Elfstedentocht 1997 / THE NETHERLANDS, Eleven Cities Tour 1997. Video impressie Franeker / Video impression Franeker.
English: A video impression (without narration, with live recorded music and sounds) of the Eleven Cities Tour, a nearly 200 kilometres long famous skating contest and leisure tour on natural ice in the Dutch Province of Friesland, that was held on the fourth of January 1997. The film was shot in Franeker and gives a lively impression of the enthousiasme and pleasure with which the massive crowd of public and the
many volunteers of organization The Friesche Elfsteden defied the cold in order to encourage and help the participants of the tour. A spectacle and a genuine national celebration! The route of the Eleven Cities Tour includes the eleven cities in Friesland that once got cities rights, in order: Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum.

Kijkjes tijdens de groote kaatspartij te Franeker
Director: Carl Welte | Production Country: The Netherlands | Year: 1920 | Production Company: Welte's Cinematograph | Film from the collection of EYE (Amsterdam) -
The film opens with shots of a parade through the city, a band, and dignitaries riding in a carriage. The bleachers surrounding the field are filled to the last seat. From a special 'tent', the board watches the match, which is played fanatically. Afterwards, the players pose for the camera. The film also contains footage of the audience, who consists almost entirely of men. Finally, we see a tribute being paid to the champions.

Documentary about the city of Franeker. | After a brief historical introduction, the film shows the main streets, canals, and buildings of Franeker, including the beautiful town hall built in 1591. Also explored in detail is the accident that befell Prince Johan Maurits of Orange in 1665 when he visited Franeker: he fell into the water, and only barely managed to be saved. Of note in the film are the sparsely populated streets – in contrast to the crowds seen in some of the other 'city films’.

This was made during the Elfstedenfietstocht or 11-city bike tour. Franeker is one of the 11 cities so it was busy. The City building is in the middle of town and is no longer used for official city business but is still used for weddings. The bells play every quarter hour.

SUP 11-City Tour 2017 - Day 3 - Workum to Franeker
The third day of the 2017 SUP 11-City Tour brings the athletes back to the normal schedule as we start in Workum to finish 42 kilometers away in Franeker. During this stage the paddlers will see some of the nicest parts of Friesland, and experience some nice weather to boot.
Athletes will experience the ultimate challenge as they paddle 220 kilometers (136 miles) in five days with weather conditions varying from windless, beautiful and sunny to cold, rainy and stormy. Besides the ultimate challenge the SUP 11-City Tour is also a unique experience. 200 national and international paddlers are expected to get to know Friesland, the northern province of Holland, from the water. Open fields with windmills, cows, and sheep will present itself along the water ways exchanged by eleven historical cities built from 1700 onwards. Since 2009 participants paddle the original waterways, where the ice skaters started conquering this historical tour on frozen waters.
