Kolhorn and Medemblik , North Holland, The Netherlands
Kolhorn is a village in the West Frisian municipality of Hollands Kroon in the province of North Holland.
Kolhorn is mentioned for the first time in 1288. The village of Colhorn was situated on the Zuiderzee until 1844 and was a fishing village. Since the reclamation of the Groetpolder, the Waardpolder and the Wieringermeer, the village lies about 20 kilometres inland.
Remains of the previous situation can still be seen on the West Frisian Circular Dike. On the dike there are still a few old fines (barns). It used to store peat and other merchandise awaiting further inland transport. Two museums are housed in the fines. Kolhorn is largely a government-protected village-village. The village also has a village church from the 17th century the Laurenskerk.
Medemblik is the oldest city in West Frisia: in 1289 it acquired city rights from Count Floris V, who at that time had just definitively subjected West Frisia to his grave authority. Until 2007, Medemblik was an independent municipality, to which no other residences belonged. The municipality was one of the smallest in the province of North Holland. The current municipality of Medemblik was the result of a merger with the municipalities of Noorder-Koggenland and Wognum as of 1 January 2007, followed by a merger with the municipalities of Wervershoof and Andijk as of 1 January 2011.
Medemblik has many historic facades, and a town hall from 1939 by the architect A.J. Kropholler. There is also a working corn mill (Molen De Herder, rebuilt 1986-1990) and the Dutch Steam Machine Museum is housed in the former steam pumping station De Vier Noorder Koggen. Medemblik has more than 80 national monuments.
Since 1887, Medemblik has had a rail connection with Hoorn. The Medemblik station building dates from the opening year. Nowadays this line is used by the Museum Steam Tram Hoorn-Medemblik.
