HOLLAND: Church of Hegebeintum, Friesland [HD]
In the Dutch province of Friesland, the small village and church of Hegebeintum are located on the highest artificial dwelling hill in the Netherlands, at about 8.8 metres (29 ft) tall.
In Friesland an artificial dwelling hill is called a 'terp'.
An artificial dwelling hill is a mound, created to provide safe ground during high tide and river floods. These hills occur in the coastal parts of the Netherlands (in the provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen), where tides interfered with daily life.
This ended with the coming of dikes. During the 18th and 19th centuries, many 'terpen' were destroyed to use the fertile soil they contained to fertilize farm fields. 'Terpen' were usually well fertilized by the decay of the rubbish and personal waste deposited by their inhabitants during centuries.
The church was built in the early 12th century, as can be seen from the use of tuff, a volcanic stone from the Eiffel Mountains in Germany. The interior of Hegebeintum church differs surprisingly from the usually sober interior of Protestant Churches, and has been influenced by the aristocratic residents of the nearby Harsta State. The memorial panels form one of the richest collections in the Netherlands. These panels, in memory of the deceased aristocracy, are dated from 1689 to 1906, and differ greatly in size and design. Some are highly decorated with symbolic carvings and gilding, whilst others are quite simple.
A very steep slope is all that remains of the original, unique, Hegebeintum 'terp'.

AMSTERDAM CITY TOUR - NETHERLANDS - WHERE TO GO, WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam city tour in the Netherlands.
This month i took a two day trip to Amsterdam in the Netherlands to check out the sights and lifestyle in this canal city. Like many I usually travel solo and this is a great place for solo travellers to get out into the world.
I took a canal boat ride through the canals of Amsterdam taking in the many different streets and sights along the way. The best way to get around Amsterdam is by a boat, a bike or simply walk.
Check out Amsterdam central station, the van gogh museum, the heineken brewery and many more.
Plenty of places to shop, eat and drink. The locals are really friendly and Amsterdam is good to visit all year round.
Amsterdam (/ˈæmstərdæm/, UK also /ˌæmstərˈdæm/;[9][10] Dutch: [ɑmstərˈdɑm] (About this sound listen)) is the capital and most populous municipality in the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands,[11] although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague.[12] Amsterdam has a population of 851,373 within the city proper, 1,351,587 in the urban area,[13] and 2,410,960 in the Amsterdam metropolitan area.[8] The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country but is not its capital, which is Haarlem. The metropolitan area comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 8 million.[14]
Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme,[15] indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds.[16] In the 19th and 20th centuries the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since the annexation of the municipality of Sloten in 1921 by the municipality of Amsterdam, the oldest historic part of the city lies in Sloten (9th century).
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands.[17] Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and seven of the world's 500 largest companies, including Philips, AkzoNobel, TomTom and ING, are based in the city.[18] Also, many leading technology companies have their European headquarters in Amsterdam, such as Uber, Netflix and Tesla.[19] In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)[20] and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer.[21] The city was ranked 3rd in innovation by Australian innovation agency 2thinknow in their Innovation Cities Index 2009.[22] The Port of Amsterdam to this day remains the second in the country, and the fifth largest seaport in Europe.[23] Famous Amsterdam residents include the diarist Anne Frank, artists Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh, and philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, include its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, the Anne Frank House, the Scheepvaartmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum, the Heineken Experience, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Natura Artis Magistra, Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, NEMO Science Museum, its red-light district and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 5 million international visitors annually.[24] The city is also well known for its nightlife and festival activity; several of its nightclubs (Melkweg, Paradiso) are among the world's most famous. It is also one of the world's most multicultural cities, with at least 177 nationalities represented.

HOLLAND: Delft city - view from church tower [HD]
The church tower of the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft is the second highest in the Netherlands (108,75 metres, 356.79 ft), after the Domtoren in Utrecht. It offers a perfect view across Delft and its surroundings. In good weather, you can easily see Rotterdam and The Hague from the top. The tower has 376 steps and reaches a height of 85 metres (278.87 ft), so it is only appropriate for visitors with good physical fitness. There is no lift.
The church was completed in 1496.
The city of Delft is primarily known for its historic town centre with canals; also for the painter Vermeer, Delft Blue pottery (Delftware), the Delft University of Technology, and its association with the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau.

HOLLAND: Afsluitdijk / Enclosure Dam [HD]
The Afsluitdijk (English: Enclosure Dam) is a major causeway in the Netherlands. It is damming off the Waddenzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea, from the fresh water lake of the IJsselmeer.
It was constructed between 1927 and 1933 and runs over a length of 32 kilometres (20 miles) and a width of 90 m, at an initial height of 7.25 m above sea-level.
The Afsluitdijk is a fundamental part of the larger Zuiderzee Works, a manmade system of dams, land reclamation and water drainage works, the largest hydraulic engineering project undertaken by the Netherlands during the twentieth century. Its main purposes are to improve flood protection and create additional land for agriculture.
Beside the dam itself is also the necessary construction of two complexes of shipping locks and discharge sluices at both ends of the dike. The complex at Den Oever includes the Stevin lock and 3 series of 5 sluices for discharging the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea. The other complex at Kornwerderzand is composed of the Lorentz locks and 2 series of 5 sluices. In total there are 25 discharge sluices. It is necessary to routinely discharge water from the lake since it is continually fed by rivers and stream and polders draining their water into the IJsselmeer.
The Afsluitdijk was Holland's first 130 kph road (1st of March 2011).

Netherlands: Amsterdam the Old Church and the New Church - De Oude en de Nieuwe Kerk
The Old Church is the oldest remaining building in Amsterdam and is located at the Oudekerk
Square in the district Amsterdam-Centrum.
At this moment a restoration takes place, which is hoped to end in 2013.
The New Church is located on the Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace. The church is built in the 14th century, when the expanding parish no longer fit in the Old Church.
Nowadays the church is also a cultural center with exhibitions, concerts and lectures.
The New Church is a burial site for Dutch naval heroes, including the Tomb of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
At the time of our visit it was alas not possible to take pictures in the entire churches because of the restoration in the Old Church and an exhibition in the New Church.
