Fresh Water Lake Dominica
The Freshwater Lake
2.5 miles from the village of Laudat high in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, this lake is the source of the Roseau River and forms the basis for Dominica's hydro-electric scheme.
The Lake was originally of volcanic origin but construction of a dam some years ago as part of the hydo-electric scheme increased the size of the lake.
It is said to be bottomless although it is actually only 55ft deep... If you visit on a grey, misty day when wind-swept vapours swirl across its dragon-green surface, you will forgive the story-tellers for creating their far-fetched legends.
The Lake is reached on a new 2.5 mile road from the main Laudat-Roseau road just before you enter the village.
2005 saw the introduction of kayaking and boat tours on the Lake.
Besides the Lake itself, there is a good hour-long trail around the lake.
You can also continue on the road to the Boeri Lake.

The Boiling Lake in Dominica
The Boiling Lake in Dominica
The Morne Trois Pitons National Park in the island country of Dominica, in the Caribbean, is an area of significant volcanic activity. Located within the boundaries of the park’s nearly 7,000 hectares are five volcanoes, dozens of hot springs and fumaroles and a very large and famous boiling lake.
Dominica's Boiling Lake is actually a flooded fumarole, which is an opening or a hole in the Earth’s crust. It is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water at temperatures of around 90°C. The water is heated by hot steam and gases escaping from molten lava below. The surface of the lake is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapor. The lake is around 76 meters across, making it the second-largest hot lake in the world after the Frying Pan Lake in Waimangu Valley near Rotorua, New Zealand.
The lake was first sighted in 1875 by two English gentlemen who were working in Dominica at that time. Later that year, a government botanist and one of the original discoverers were commissioned to investigate this natural phenomenon. They measured the water temperature and found it to range from 82–92 °C along the edges, but could not measure the temperature at the center where the lake is actively boiling. They estimated the lake to be about 60 meters deep or more.
The lake is fed by rainfall and two small streams which drain into the area. The water then seeps down to the lava and is heated to the boiling point. The lake’s water level keeps fluctuating and the activity of the lake also lowers from time to time. The lake had almost disappeared after a phreatic eruption occurred nearby in 1880, and formed a fountain of hot water and steam instead. The lake had another dramatic fluctuation in 2004-2005 when its level got lowered by 10 meters, and then recovered in a single day.
Geologists believe that the lake is suspended above the local water table, which explains its rapid draining and refilling. A continuous flux of steam or gas generated by an underlying magmatic intrusion drives water up into the lake. A disturbance to the supply of gas can cause the lake to drain through the porous connection that normally allows steam to rise and heat the lake.

11 Most Terrifying Lakes on Earth
Lakes usually instill a feeling of calm and serenity with their clear water and light breezes. When you imagine a lake, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a calm pool of water where you can swim, sail, or just sit and enjoy the beauty. But are all lakes safe? Well, we don’t think you’ll wanna go anywhere near the lakes we’re gonna tell you about, let alone take a dip in their dangerous waters!
Have you ever heard, for example, about the Boiling Lake? Located in Dominica’s Morne Trois Pitons National Park, this lake can reach temperatures of 197°F along the edges. One more really dangerous lake is located in Africa. Weather conditions over it change so rapidly and without any warning that even experienced sailors have no idea when to expect danger...

SUMMARY:
- Dubbed the most polluted place on earth, Lake Karachay is no body of water you want to be anywhere near. And that’s because it was chosen as a dumping site for radioactive waste back in the 1950s.
- Rakshastal is so salty that literally nothing can survive in its waters, and those who live in nearby villages consider it poisonous.
- If there’s a really notorious lake on our planet, it’s definitely Lake Natron. First of all, the water can get as hot as 120°F, the red stuff is salt so it’s certainly not a freshwater lake, and its pH level is about 10.5. This makes it so alkaline that very few creatures can live in it.
- There are lakes surrounded by lush forests and green pastures, and then there’s Horseshoe Lake that only has dead trees for hundreds of feet around. This lake is among the deadliest in the world because of its CO2 emissions.
- Lake Nyos is one of the 3 explosive lakes we know about. Its CO2 deposits at the bottom are quite dangerous, and even the smallest earthquake can trigger their release.
- Lake of the Ozarks located in central Missouri actually holds a dark secret: it’s downright poisonous! The concentration of E. coli bacteria in its water is so high that you can get sick just by swimming in it.
- Lake Michigan isn’t as safe as you think. Its underwater currents can be so rapid that if you swim in it, you won’t even have time to react when something grabs you and pulls you into the watery depths.
- Just like Lake Nyos, Kivu is an exploding lake and one of the It holds not only CO2 at its bottom but also about 1.94 trillion cubic feet of methane, an extremely explosive gas.
- There’s nothing toxic, explosive, or extremely hot about the waters of Lake Champlain. You see, Champlain is home to hundreds, if not thousands, of lampreys. Lampreys are blood-sucking parasites that latch onto their prey to feed.

Laudat, Dominica - Titou Gorge HD (2015)
Laudat is a small village in the interior of Dominica, nestled between 3 mountains: Morne Watt, Morne Micotrine (Morne Mackak), and Morne Trois Pitons. With a population of just above 300 persons, Laudat is referred to as a gateway because it is the sole entry point to many of the islands most spectacular sights, including the Boiling Lake, Fresh Water Lake, and Titou Gorge, among others. Perched about 1200 feet above sea level Laudat boasts a cool climate and spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea. It is located approximately 20 minutes from the capital, Roseau and is literally the end of the road (there is no alternative but to turn around to exit) The road to Laudat used to be a hair-raising ride up the mountains, around blind hairpin turns with sharp drop-offs into the jungle canopy; however, the road has been improved and may be completed by the time of this writing. Laudat has seen many changes over the past years, including the aerial tram taking visitors from the village up into the high mountains--making possible what was previously a daunting journey by foot, to even the least athletic visitors. Titou Gorge was also altered over the last decade and is now considerably smaller and more developed. It is still a great place to swim, and small waterfalls of hot and cold water stream into the gorge. There are some overnight accommodations available in the village. There are also a few small shops of the kind typically found throughout the Caribbean; rum, soft drinks and a few grocery and household items can be found. Laudat receives some of the highest rainfalls in the Caribbean, about 900 cm a year. The air is often misty and cool, and is a refreshing change from the blazing heat of the low areas.
