Furnas Sao Miguel. Azores
Furnas Sao Miguel. Azores (2008).
Furnas is a civil parish in the municipality of Povoação on the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,439, in an area of 34.43 km². The parish is one of the largest in the island and in the Azores. It is located east of Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, west of Povoação and southeast of Ribeira Grande. One of the earliest references to Furnas came from the harvesting of trees in the valley of Furnas, in order to assist the construction of many of the homes destroyed by the 1522 earthquakes and landslides in Vila Franca do Campo. This includes numerous trees used to rebuild the parochial church, a project begun by Donatary-Captain Rui Gonçalves da Câmara. In 1553, his predecessor Manuel da Câmara, issued an edict to re-plant these trees after the area was nearly deforested, and roadways were expanded under his son, Rui Gonçalves da Câmara, in order to develop the area, allowing cattle herding in the valley after 1577.
Still during the tenure of Manuel da Câmara, a chapel was constructed to the invocation of Nossa Senhora da Consolação (Our Lady of Consolation) in 1613, and small residence built for the local priest (who was responsible for masses and the lighting of a lamp in the sacristy). More homes soon appeared in this area around 1615, and a small convent was constructed near the chapel. In 1630, as a consequence of a volcanic eruption in the valley, the area was abandoned. But, new settlers quickly returned to the Furnas valley (mostly from Ponta Garça, Povoação, Vila Franca and Maia) as the land became fertile and better able to sustain a larger population. New roads were constructed on orders between 1682–83, donated by the Baron of Larangeiras.
Even isolated in the interior, the village continued to be vulnerable to pirate attacks. In 1679, Algerian pirates (from the Barbary coast) landed in the of Portinho de Agrião, sacked the coastal village of Ribeira Quente, and proceeded to the interior, where the robbed several rams from the valley before returning to the coast. José Pereira Sodré, a resident near Agrião petitioned the governor of São Miguel for one of the canons that existed at the city hall in Vila Franca; he intended that the armament would be used to defend the area from future attacks: it was rejected.
In 1832, an unknown English settler purchased a large parcel around the crater lake to build a home, but unfortunately abandoned it and sold it to the English Consul-General at Ponta Delgada, named Vines, in 1855. There Mr. Vines constructed a summer home, with garden, which he named Grená in honour of his wife's familial relations: his spouse was the niece of Daniel O´Connell (who organized the Catholic movement in Ireland) and stayed at their Irish relatives' home, also called Grená. Upon Consul Vine's death, the home was used by a London surgeon named Hinton (who was a publisher of many works on hygiene and hearing), since Catherine Vine did not wish to return to Furnas. After Hinton's death in 1875, the home was used by Jorge Brown, who exploited the home as a hotel for summer tourists for several years. During this period many travellers stayed at the hotel, including Alice Baker (who wrote A Summer in the Azores with a Glimpse of Madeira) and others who produced literary and scientific reviews of the region. In 1882, Grená was sold by Catherine Vine's son to Jorge Hayes, following the death of Jorge Brown in the same year. It was occupied by José do Canto while his home and chapel were being constructed on the other side of the lake.

AZORES: Terra Nostra Park, Furnas - São Miguel Island
Parque Terra Nostra is a botanical garden located in the village of Furnas, on the Island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores.
You can find flora typical of the Azores, as well as numerous plants native to countries with climates that are completely different to that of Furnas. This adaptation has been made possible, in part, by the shared experience of Terra Nostra’s gardeners, who have been successful in adapting various plants, species and varieties to the existing conditions of the garden.
There is a thermal pool with volcanic, natural iron water of brown color. A thermal spring supplies the pool, at a temperature of between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius.
There are also two natural jacuzzis with thermal water
The development of the botanical garden & thermal pool started in 1780, after the then Consul of the United States, Thomas Hickling (1745-1834), ordered to build his summer residence here.
Vasco Elias Bensaude (1898-1967) bought, restored and expanded the park from 1937.

The Azores (Portuguese: Açores) is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal (along with Madeira). It is an archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. All the islands have volcanic origins.
São Miguel Island is the largest and most populous island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The island covers 760 km2 (290 sq mi) and has around 140,000 inhabitants, with 45,000 people resident in Ponta Delgada, the archipelago's largest city.
Similar to other islands in the archipelago, São Miguel is influenced by ocean currents and winds, and, in particular, the cyclonic Gulf Stream. This keeps temperatures hovering between 14 °C (57 °F) and 26 °C (79 °F) throughout the year. The island's location also makes it susceptible to many Atlantic storms.

The majority of journalists around the world have chosen to develop their subject on controversial and sensational themes: violence, war, crime. But all these facts represent only 1% of our world and its inhabitants, forgetting the remaining 99% of which we never speak.
I chose to visit every country on the planet and film them to present them in High Definition format but in a raw way, without music, without comment. Simply, reality in all its truth. Thus, you will be able to make your own idea of the world in which you live.

Azores, Furnas, São Miguel island
I met some young people who showed me and Chilly around Furnas. An amazing village built inside the crater of an active volcano. Beautiful scenery, a lake, bubbling cauldrons and an amazing gothic church.
The locals are so proud of the lovely environment and the sight on they’re little island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
What started as an accidental surprise stop is turning into an adventure on an incredible piece of our planet.
Geographically as far from Australia as you can get, few Australian tourists visit this place which has many similarities to Australia especially with food and relaxed lifestyles.
I’m thrilled to find out that im the first Australian tourist encounter many locals have had.

In Furnas, at the exit to Povoação, you can see a group of boilers steaming with the water in great boiling.
The Caldeira are visible from anywhere in town as they look like smoke. They are in fact vents of steam and other vapours from deep in the ground. There is a small park where you follow a path from vent to vent. Some are noisy and deep in the ground other just boiling on the surface, You can smell the sulphur and iron in the air. It is very interesting and part of a great day out in Furnas.

Terra Nostra Gardens & Furnas Hot Springs in Ponta Delgada, Azores - What to Do on Your Day in Port
On our port call in Ponta Delgada in the Azores, we took a shore excursion we bought onboard the Jewel of the Seas. The name of the tour was Terra Nostra Gardens & Furnas Hot Springs. And as the title says, we went to those places on the Island. The tour also stopped in the town of Riberia Grande on the North shore of the island. The price was $70 US each. It was a very good tour for the money. We really enjoyed it.
