Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto: All 10,000 Gates Explored ★ ONLY in JAPAN #24 夜の京都伏見稲荷神社
Adventure in Kyoto! Loads of culture and history in one city.
We've got all that and more in this episode of ONLY in JAPAN.
Kyoto's Shrine of 10,000 'Torii' or Gates is simply awesome. It's also ranked as Japan's no.1 attraction for foreign tourists*
Yes, it can be crowded during the day, but we'll explore this mysterous shrine at night when no one is around -- except the wildlife and a few stragglers.
This time, John will explore and explain Kyoto's most popular shrine, Fushimi Inari.
HISTORY:
Fushimi Inari is full of history going back to the year 717!
John interviews one of the Shinto priests and unravel some of the history that might not be in guidebooks. The lengend of Fushimi Inari is revealed!
Are those gates orange or red?
What's the meaning behind the color?
Which big Hollywood movie was this shrine featured in?
Who cleans all these gates?
John wants to know.
WHEN TO VISIT:
It may seem impossible to escape the crowds here, but you can!
The hours are officially listed as 10:00 to 16:00 but the shrine is open to all free of charge 24 hours a day.
Best of all it's FREE! Why? The gates!! They're all bought by people and businesses to bring them luck.
The best time to see it is at night. It's when most locals go with thewir friends, high school couples can be seen climbing up together. Night time adventurers will also see a lot of cats! That rustling you hear on the woods outside the orange gates may not always be a cat though ....
KYOTO BY BICYCLE:
How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Kyoto Station?
I could draw you a map, but it's much better to show you by bicycle!
Rent a cycle for the day and see more of Kyoto. Cheap and easy.
KCTP (Kyoto Cycling Tour Project) has a good variety of city bicycles for the surrounding hills or the city. You can reserve online or call and have the bike waiting for you as soon as you arrive.
The city is not always cycle friendly so keep to the left side, use the light after dark and try to avoid pedestrian sidewalks.
HOW TO GET THERE:
Here's the Google Map
Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto Station for 3 stops or rent a bicycle :) Taxi takes about 10-15 minutes.

JR Inari Station (JR 稲荷駅), Fushimi Ward, South of Kyoto City
JR Inari Station (JR 稲荷駅) is a train station in Fushimi-ku (Fushimi Ward), about five minute train ride from the JR Kyoto Station. Fushimi ward is famous for Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of the most beautiful and unique shrines in all of Japan. Fushimi ward is also serviced by Keihan railway but if you are carrying JR Pass, take the JR train instead.
Fushimi ward is also famous for it's sake breweries and you can take a tour of one of the breweries after you visit the Shrine. Enjoy!!!

Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan is beautiful to explore. When you're here you must make sure to eat the Fushimi Inari food of kitsune udon and inari sushi. The shrine is dedicated to the god of rice and the messengers of the god are kitsune or foxes. It is said that the kitsune's favourite food is deep fried tofu skin in inari sushi and udon or soba so there are a few places near Fushimi Inari to sample inari and kitsune udon.
We ate at Oukujidokoro Inari restaurant, a couple of minutes walk from the station and located on the street on the way up to the shrine on the left.
Another snack to try besides the street food vendors that line the path leading up to Fushimi Inari shrine is the tofu soft serve. It's creamy and super tasty!
After visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine we head to Gion, Kyotos famous geisha district and then on to Ippudo Ramen for dinner.
We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist. Subscribe to our food and travel channel for more Japanese food and travel videos.

Hi everyone! Today we're doing something I never got to do in the whole time I was living in Japan - climb to the top of Fushimi Inari Shrine! This shrine is in Kyoto and is famous for all the red tori gates it has snaking up a mountain. I've never done the full route - till today! It's not a hard hike, and doesn't take much time. Check out the video to see if you'd like to do it when you visit Kyoto! Thanks so much for watching!

There are thousands of vermillion pillars in the precincts.
This red pillar is called torii.
The whole mountain with a shrine is a sanctuary where God lives.
It will take more than an hour to climb the mountaintop.

FEATURES IN THIS EPISODE:
** Fushimi Inari
Train: Inari Train Station
If you are coming down to Kyoto, you’ll know why this is amongst the top most visited spot by tourist every day, every month and every year.
Famous for its thousand gates Fushimi Inari is the most important of several thousands of shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Foxes are thought to be Inari's messengers, resulting in many fox statues across the shrine grounds. First and foremost, Inari is the god of rice, but merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshiped Inari as the patron of business. Each of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha has been donated by a Japanese businesses
My recommended Itinerary for coming down to Fushimi Inari
- Wake up at 5am
- Leave hotel / Airbnb / motel by 5.30
- Get there by 6am (Train / Bicycle / etc)
- Head uphill to get your picture / video
- Once you are done head up again to explore the mountain top
**Warning its quite a hike, there is a halfway point where its pretty high up and decent **
But if you got the time, knock yourself up - if you do my itinerary on this video including a pit stop at the coffee place (9am you will be down at the base of Fushimi Inari Shrine Again)
** Vermillion Café
The name itself is inspired by the colour of the Torii gates of fushimi inari, in Fushimi Inari there is two vermillion café.
The one I tried is halfway down the Fushimi Inari shrine, there is another near the station (but I would guess it would be a lot more crowded down there)
Okay what I like about this coffee shop is the fact that the owner took its concept from the laneways and alleyway of the city of Melbourne, Australia.
And if you don’t know it, Australian are into their coffee!
Vermillion Café uses local Kyoto Beans to make their Coffee, absolutely amazing and after your 6am workout up and down the shrine, it will be worth making a pit-stop down here and support their local business as well.
If you have read this far down, do feel free to support me by commenting, thumbs up and subscribing goes along way.
And see you next week for more Japan Adventures

Fushimi Inari Shrine. Kyoto, Japan 【HD】
The Fushimi Inari Taisha, is a complex with several Shinto Shrines, located about 2,5 km southeast of the JR Kyoto Station, with a total area of 870,000 square meters. Its most famous feature is the Senbon-Torii or the Thousand Torii Gates standing in the path to the Oku-sha.
More than 24 ceremonies are held in this Shrine around the year. Within the boundaries of the Shrine, you'll find mysterious trails going up the Inari Mountain, two ponds and a general ambience that somehow takes you away from reality into a travel back in time, to a land where the spirits and creatures of Japanese tales and folklore wander and hide behind the countless Torii gates and Byakko Fox Statues.
In this video we see the main path to the Shrine Complex, then people participating in the Nagoshi no Oharae ceremony. Later we see the Senbon Torii gates and part of what you see when going further into the trails up the Inari Mountain.

TRADITIONAL Japanese STREET FOOD Tour at Fushimi Inari Shrine | Kyoto, Japan
During my twelve incredible days exploring the Asian island nation of Japan in January of 2019, I absolutely fell in love with the country. The people, the culture, the gorgeous sites, and of course, the phenomenal food, captured my heart. It’s near the top of my list of my favorite destinations of all-time and I believe it’s a place everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime. Join me on my latest Japanese adventure!
My Film Making Kit ►
After arriving in Kyoto on the morning of my fourth day in Japan, I met up with my new friend and guide Kosuke, who took me on an incredible tour of Kyoto’s temples and an insanely delicious traditional Japanese street food tour at the Fushimi Inari Shrine! Come along with me as I begin my exploration of Kyoto and gorge on some of its best street food!
Kyoto is an ancient city that is steeped in history and tradition (it served as Japan’s capital for over 1,000 years from the 8th century to the 20th century), and that history and tradition can be seen at every turn. The moment I arrived, I was immediately blown away by how different Kyoto felt from the ultra-modern concrete jungle of Tokyo. Kyoto felt much quieter and much more traditional by comparison. There are roughly 2,000 temples in the city!
My tour began at Kōmyō-in, a sub-temple in the Tōfuku-ji Buddhist temple complex that was founded in 1391. The temple is famous for its Zen garden, maple trees, and cherry blossoms. It’s customary to take off your shoes when you enter any Japanese temple or apartment, so we did so and continued on to the Zen garden, which is covered in moss; contains lots of white gravel (which is raked weekly by the head monk); and has lots of large rocks jutting up from the moss. The rocks represent mountains and the white gravel symbolizes the ocean. You can’t step into the garden; you have to enjoy it from the wooden walkways of the temple.
Inside the temple are several rooms and photos of the temple hanging on the walls. Kosuke also took me to the praying hall, where the head monk reads from the Buddhist bible. The hall contains a statue of the Buddha and is beautiful!
Next, we headed off to get some breakfast at the food market near the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is a very famous shrine that sees 7,000 visitors per day, including locals who pray for the prosperity of their businesses.
The aroma of the food in the market was amazing! I couldn’t wait to try it!
I started with takoyaki (500 Yen/$4.46), or octopus balls, which are made from a batter containing octopus, red ginger, and cabbage. It was hot, but so delicious with a soft, crème brûlée-like consistency inside, and had a nice takoyaki sauce and bonito flakes on top.
Next was a tofu steak (400 Yen/$3.57), which is tofu on a stick that’s pan-fried and is topped with wasabi, ponzu sauce, seaweed, and bonito flakes. I loved it, especially the texture of the bonito flakes and the flavor of the seaweed! So delicious!
We followed that with gyoza (300 Yen/$2.68 for 3 gyozas), or a type of Japanese potsticker, which was wrapped with chicken skin. It was the best gyoza I’ve ever had! The chicken skin was really fatty and changed the texture of the gyoza. It blew my mind! I followed that with a dried, fig-like fruit that was amazing as well.
As we continued through the market, I bought two Japanese masks (2,000 Yen each/$17.86 each) for my wall at home. We made our way toward the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Kosuke told me that it became popular after the film “Memoirs of a Geisha” was filmed there.
The shrine’s most popular site is the 10,000 vermilion torii gates that straddle a network of trails going up the mountain. Each gate was donated by a Japanese businessman and is inscribed with the name of the businessman’s company and the date it was donated. The gates are gorgeous!
Next, I visited some miniature torii gates stacked in front of the holy rock, and picked up the good luck rock to see what kind of luck I would have! Let’s just say I hope it was wrong!
I hope you enjoyed my temple, shrine, and food tour of Kyoto! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel for more awesome travel and food content!

Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine (伏見稲荷大社) - Part 1 (Visiting the Shrine), Kyoto City
Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine (伏見稲荷大社) is the head shrine of all Inari shrines in Japan. Inari shrines are generally dedicated to the shinto gods associated with agriculture and rice growing. The Fushimi Ward (伏見区) is also known for great sake breweries.
The worshiped shinto deity here is called Inari-Okami and the shrine was dedicated to this deity in 711 AD. This Shrine is located south of Kyoto city and can be easily reached by a ten minute train ride from JR Kyoto Station (at the JR Inari Station).
One of the most fascinating aspects of this shrine is the Inari mountain area (O-Inarisan). The entire mountain is full of small shrines and associated Toriis (Shrine Gates). The pathways connecting these locations on the mountain are covered with beautiful red colored Toriis. There are literally tens of hundreds of these gates all over the Shrine trek.
In the part 1 of this video I will introduce you to the Shrine and then in the part 2 I will introduce you to the trek on the Inari mountain.
Enjoy!!!
The Making of Taiyaki at Fushimi Inari Shrine Kyoto, Japan
Taiyaki is a famous Traditional Japanese Cake that appears in very cute fish shape. We found this man making Taiyaki Fish just at the exit of Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto. With just 100 yen, you can choose either Red bean or Creme Filling inside your delicious Taiyaki. It's a must try when you travel to Japan.
