Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto: All 10,000 Gates Explored ★ ONLY in JAPAN #24 夜の京都伏見稲荷神社
Adventure in Kyoto! Loads of culture and history in one city.
We've got all that and more in this episode of ONLY in JAPAN.
Kyoto's Shrine of 10,000 'Torii' or Gates is simply awesome. It's also ranked as Japan's no.1 attraction for foreign tourists*
Yes, it can be crowded during the day, but we'll explore this mysterous shrine at night when no one is around -- except the wildlife and a few stragglers.
This time, John will explore and explain Kyoto's most popular shrine, Fushimi Inari.
HISTORY:
Fushimi Inari is full of history going back to the year 717!
John interviews one of the Shinto priests and unravel some of the history that might not be in guidebooks. The lengend of Fushimi Inari is revealed!
Are those gates orange or red?
What's the meaning behind the color?
Which big Hollywood movie was this shrine featured in?
Who cleans all these gates?
John wants to know.
WHEN TO VISIT:
It may seem impossible to escape the crowds here, but you can!
The hours are officially listed as 10:00 to 16:00 but the shrine is open to all free of charge 24 hours a day.
Best of all it's FREE! Why? The gates!! They're all bought by people and businesses to bring them luck.
The best time to see it is at night. It's when most locals go with thewir friends, high school couples can be seen climbing up together. Night time adventurers will also see a lot of cats! That rustling you hear on the woods outside the orange gates may not always be a cat though ....
KYOTO BY BICYCLE:
How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Kyoto Station?
I could draw you a map, but it's much better to show you by bicycle!
Rent a cycle for the day and see more of Kyoto. Cheap and easy.
KCTP (Kyoto Cycling Tour Project) has a good variety of city bicycles for the surrounding hills or the city. You can reserve online or call and have the bike waiting for you as soon as you arrive.
The city is not always cycle friendly so keep to the left side, use the light after dark and try to avoid pedestrian sidewalks.
HOW TO GET THERE:
Here's the Google Map
Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto Station for 3 stops or rent a bicycle :) Taxi takes about 10-15 minutes.

Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, Japan (伏見稲荷大社) ⛩️ | Hiking Kyoto's 10,000 Red Gates!
Another Kyoto must-visit! We woke up early to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, Japan. This is the famed shrine with 10,000 red gates lining a path through the wooded forest of Mount Inari. The shrine is dedicated to Inari (伏見稲荷大社), the Shinto god of rice agriculture, but he is also worshipped by those in business. The foxes seen throughout the shrine are regarded as Inari's messengers - one of them holds a key in his mouth symbolizing the keys to the rice granary. The red torii gates along the entire trail, are all donations by both individuals and companies. Also, if this place looks familiar, you probably recognize it from the movie 'Memoirs of a Geisha'!
Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is a must-visit attraction in Kyoto, Japan. As one of the most iconic Instagram worthy places to visit in Kyoto (and all of Japan) we'd highly recommend waking up as early as possible to visit before it becomes impossibly busy with crowds. The earlier you get there the more likely you will have opportunities to snap photos without other people being in them. Furthermore, the further up you hike the more you have Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) to yourself.
Have you visited Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, Japan? Would you like to visit this attraction in Kyoto? Let us know in the comment section below.

Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto, Japan (伏見稲荷大社) ⛩️ | Hiking Kyoto's 10,000 Red Gates!
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel, we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world. Our most recent trip was to Japan where we spent 2 months travelling around the country and visiting the following destinations: Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, Takayama, Yokohama, Odaiba, Shirakawa-gō and Takao.
During our stay, we visited a mixture of big cities and small rural towns, where we enjoyed eating Japanese street food, trying traditional Japanese cuisine, visiting local attractions and staying in unique accommodations (such as capsule hotels and ryokans) that we are now going to share with you on this channel. The combination and contrast of visiting futuristic cities and traditional countryside areas is what makes travel to Japan so fascinating. Ultra modern versus traditional. This is the essence of Japan.
Our trip to Japan was unforgettable and until now it is one of our favourite countries that we have come to know. However, we only feel as though we just scratched the surface on this trip to Japan. If you want to see more videos from Japan in the future, let us know in the comments that places you'd like us to travel to and food experiences you would like to see on this travel channel.
Have you travelled to Japan before? What was your experience like? Please share your Japan travel tips, advice and experiences in the comments below.
Thanks again for watching our Japan series! Until next time!

Fushimi-Inari-Taisha temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
The Fushimi-Inari-Taisha shrine in Kyoto, Japan is most famous for its long rows of vermilion Torii gates, nearly 5000 gates in all.
Various temple structures are in front including the famous Romon Gate, but the main attraction is that vast network of Torii gates which have made Inari one of the most popular destinations in town.
Whenever you see the torii gate you know that this is not a Buddhist temple but instead it's a Shinto shrine.
And this is the main shrine of this particular Shinto sect that's dedicated to the gods of rice and sake. Throughout Japan there are 40,000 other Inari shrines but this is the principle one.
The Inari Shrine is a wonderful Shinto experience. You walk through all of these different gateways along a path that winds through the forest.
This is the largest collection of Torii gates anywhere in the world.
You could spend one or two hours walking this pathway that extends for almost 3 miles altogether.
The gates are surrounded by natural forest and by various small cultivated gardens with some ponds here and there.
You can walk all the way up the hillside to the top of Mount Inari, which is about 240 meters high and you won't get lost, just follow the path, follow the tunnels of torii gates.
The biggest problem with the Inari shrine is that it's just too popular -- it's being loved to death.
Full Hike: The Endless Torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) in Kyoto, Japan
Hike Description:
Travelers to Japan are often confronted with the paradox of choice, but not to worry, as the choices are all good ones. They also suffer the too-little-timeitis condition, wishing their holiday trips could somehow be lengthened for them to experience more. Alas, if there was enough time, one might make the journey to the historical capital of Kyoto, next hop a train to either Inari or Fushimi-inari Station, then enter the Fushimi Inari Taisha (Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine), and finally walk among the multitude of torii (Shinto shrine gates)—which would make a fine choice indeed.
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head Inari shrine in Japan; there are around 30,000 other affiliated Inari shrines in the network. Lying at the base of and including the sacred Inariyama (Mt. Inari), the entire shrine complex is immense, containing many sub-shrines, buildings, teahouses, trails, ponds, and other sacred sites. Those are not yet counting the impressive torii, painted in vermilion and numbered in the thousands. They are donated by individuals and businesses for their wishes and prayers.
Worshipers, near and far, will also come to perform a 5-km pilgrimage through the complex, visit each sub-shrine, and pay respects to the different deities. The most ardent stand under the water at Yakuriki-taki. The tired rest at the teahouses while enjoying various treats and hot/cold beverages. And they will do so in the company of foreign and local visitors, hikers, students, and the plainly curious, as this is one of the most visited sites in the country.
Self Commentary:
In Kyoto there are many ways to get to the shrine, but if travelling by train then get off at the Inari Station to be deposited directly in front of the trailhead/main entrance, or the nearby Fushimi-inari Station instead and walk 5 minutes. Beware that this is a very popular location, therefore the crowds will show up soon after 08:00—and chilly December air does not seem to discourage anyone. If the goal is to take photos of the torii with nobody around, it is best to arrive very early in the morning.
I read that at night the hiking paths would be lit up by lanterns, but, unfortunately, did not get a chance to see that. It would be a different and somewhat eerie experience compared to doing a day hike. I also do not show every sub-shrine or sacred spot (I did visit them) in the video due to time and to leave something for viewers to discover. To thoroughly explore everything I would spend at least half a day here. And remember to also wander the surrounding streets as there are many interesting local shops, restaurants, businesses, and others. Finally, come during a festival or important event to up the enjoyment factor (the official shrine website lists some of the biggest ones).

TRADITIONAL Japanese STREET FOOD Tour at Fushimi Inari Shrine | Kyoto, Japan
During my twelve incredible days exploring the Asian island nation of Japan in January of 2019, I absolutely fell in love with the country. The people, the culture, the gorgeous sites, and of course, the phenomenal food, captured my heart. It’s near the top of my list of my favorite destinations of all-time and I believe it’s a place everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime. Join me on my latest Japanese adventure!
My Film Making Kit ►
After arriving in Kyoto on the morning of my fourth day in Japan, I met up with my new friend and guide Kosuke, who took me on an incredible tour of Kyoto’s temples and an insanely delicious traditional Japanese street food tour at the Fushimi Inari Shrine! Come along with me as I begin my exploration of Kyoto and gorge on some of its best street food!
Kyoto is an ancient city that is steeped in history and tradition (it served as Japan’s capital for over 1,000 years from the 8th century to the 20th century), and that history and tradition can be seen at every turn. The moment I arrived, I was immediately blown away by how different Kyoto felt from the ultra-modern concrete jungle of Tokyo. Kyoto felt much quieter and much more traditional by comparison. There are roughly 2,000 temples in the city!
My tour began at Kōmyō-in, a sub-temple in the Tōfuku-ji Buddhist temple complex that was founded in 1391. The temple is famous for its Zen garden, maple trees, and cherry blossoms. It’s customary to take off your shoes when you enter any Japanese temple or apartment, so we did so and continued on to the Zen garden, which is covered in moss; contains lots of white gravel (which is raked weekly by the head monk); and has lots of large rocks jutting up from the moss. The rocks represent mountains and the white gravel symbolizes the ocean. You can’t step into the garden; you have to enjoy it from the wooden walkways of the temple.
Inside the temple are several rooms and photos of the temple hanging on the walls. Kosuke also took me to the praying hall, where the head monk reads from the Buddhist bible. The hall contains a statue of the Buddha and is beautiful!
Next, we headed off to get some breakfast at the food market near the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is a very famous shrine that sees 7,000 visitors per day, including locals who pray for the prosperity of their businesses.
The aroma of the food in the market was amazing! I couldn’t wait to try it!
I started with takoyaki (500 Yen/$4.46), or octopus balls, which are made from a batter containing octopus, red ginger, and cabbage. It was hot, but so delicious with a soft, crème brûlée-like consistency inside, and had a nice takoyaki sauce and bonito flakes on top.
Next was a tofu steak (400 Yen/$3.57), which is tofu on a stick that’s pan-fried and is topped with wasabi, ponzu sauce, seaweed, and bonito flakes. I loved it, especially the texture of the bonito flakes and the flavor of the seaweed! So delicious!
We followed that with gyoza (300 Yen/$2.68 for 3 gyozas), or a type of Japanese potsticker, which was wrapped with chicken skin. It was the best gyoza I’ve ever had! The chicken skin was really fatty and changed the texture of the gyoza. It blew my mind! I followed that with a dried, fig-like fruit that was amazing as well.
As we continued through the market, I bought two Japanese masks (2,000 Yen each/$17.86 each) for my wall at home. We made our way toward the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Kosuke told me that it became popular after the film “Memoirs of a Geisha” was filmed there.
The shrine’s most popular site is the 10,000 vermilion torii gates that straddle a network of trails going up the mountain. Each gate was donated by a Japanese businessman and is inscribed with the name of the businessman’s company and the date it was donated. The gates are gorgeous!
Next, I visited some miniature torii gates stacked in front of the holy rock, and picked up the good luck rock to see what kind of luck I would have! Let’s just say I hope it was wrong!
I hope you enjoyed my temple, shrine, and food tour of Kyoto! If you did, please give it a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel for more awesome travel and food content!

Exploring Japan: Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine Kyoto Japan
Make sure to like, share, and subscribe.
I was able to go to Kyoto this week and I was really excited about seeing the Fushimi Inari shrine there. So myself and Micah treked out to explore the beauty of it. If you've ever seen Memoirs of a Geisha this place might look very familiar to you as they filmed in this beautiful place. Also this might be the deepest I get as there was a quazi candid moment caught in this video that worked given the surroundings. Also Micah and I stumble upon a ridiculously large buddist shrine in this video to as an bonus. About Yukendoit.
Welcome! What you are looking at is a former Universal Studios, Halloween Horror Night, Walt Disney World actor/worker youtuber here. I really want to show the world to you! I was pretty inspired by Adamthewoo to get out and start making videos, and now I've left America to do just that. Now I'm out in Osaka, Japan. Living daily life in Japan. But I make adventure videos of exploring strange Japanese locations, theme parks like Universal Studios Japan, and generally showing off life as an American Abroad Jvlogging in Japan. As well I like to make Jvlogs about life in Japan. As I am a former scareactor at Halloween Horror Nights in Florida, I am very interested in the strange side of Japanese culture. Ghosts, Yokai, the Japanese equivlent of Oujia boards, abandoned Japanese buildings, and Japanese haunted houses like the one at Fuji Q Highland it's the longest one in the world!
Why the name Yukendoit? Well I think that you can do it! I'm currently teaching English in Japan and I love it. Patreon patreon.com/yukendoit

Renting a Kimono in Kyoto | Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine
We spent a day exploring Kyoto and the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine (famous for it’s beautiful red torii) after renting a Kimono.
We rented our Kimono from a Kimono rental store called Kimono no Obebe We wore our Kimono while exploring the beautiful Kyoto!
Thank you so much to Shoko and the whole team at Kimono no Obebe for making our day so wonderful with your kimono experience!
A little travel tip: go earlier in the day (or much much later but be aware that it gets dark fast) to get that perfect Instagram photo within the torii. Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine *can* be a bit of a tourist trap in Kyoto but I really believe that if you plan your trip right, you can have an amazing experience. The whole area is incredibly beautiful and steeped in history so do not be put of by the tourism/school trips/etc. It is still very much worth a visit!

Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine, Kyoto, Japan
In November 2019 I travelled across Japan with my daughter Bronwyn. She was there on series of speaking engagements talking about her artwork.
I travelled with her and we visited cities such as Tokyo, Nagoya, Saitama, Osaka and Kyoto. Being a mountain enthusiast I sought out something to climb while we were there as the Government shut down Mount Fuji during the winter months. The obvious choice was Mount Inari in Kyoto, a mountain made all the more impressive because it is the home of the most beautiful and scenic shrines in all of Japan.
Fushimi Inari-Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the head shrine of the kami Inari, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari which is 233 metres (764 ft) above sea level, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines which span 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) and take approximately 2 hours to walk up.

Fushimi Inari Shrine DAY & NIGHT - Kyoto, Japan Vlog
Visiting Fushimi Inari Shrine at day and night when it's dark! The highlight of our Kyoto trip, and one of the best things we did in Japan.
Fushimi Inari Shrine is a stunning Japanese shrine in Kyoto, with thousands of red tori gates. As well as visiting the main shrine buildings, you can walk up the mountain on a pathway through the gates. It's an amazing experience, and absolutely beautiful. Fushimi Inari is also free to visit, and the walkway doesn't close so you can go late in the evening when it's quieter and less touristy!
