About the Site
The Panama Fruit Feeder Cam is located on the grounds of the Canopy Lodge in El Valle de Antón, Panama. This site is just over 2,000 ft above sea level in the low mountains of Cerro Gaital, with a mild springtime climate year-round. A small stream called Rio Guayabo runs past the feeders in the background, and the lush landscaping of the Canopy Lodge grounds grade into the forested slopes around them. The feeding table is around 40 feet from the main lodge, and is one of several feeders provisioned throughout the day so that guests to the lodge are greeted to spectacular views of many of the common birds found in this ecosystem.
About the Canopy Lodge
The Canopy Lodge is a full service lodge specializing in nature tourism with a focus on birds. It is about 60 miles west of Panama City in the picturesque village of El Valle de Antón, right in the center of the gigantic crater of an extinct volcano. This is the largest inhabited crater in the Western Hemisphere and second only to the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. It is surrounded by the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument.
Canopy Lodge is one of a series of three ecotourism ventures developed by the Canopy Family. The first, Canopy Tower, involved transforming a former U.S. radar station overlooking the Panama Canal in Soberanía National Park into a unique birding lodge embedded in the canopy of the surrounding forest. Their newest property, Canopy Camp, offers a taste of some of the wildest lowland rainforest in Panama in the Darién region.

Panama with Victor Emanuel Nature Tours Part II
Two hours west of Panama City is the scenic town of El Valle. Canopy Lodge, the creation of Raul Aria de Para, is ringed by mountain peaks and a short walk from town where tourist and locals gather in the colorful marketplace. But Canopy Lodge is best know as a destination for birders. Sit on the veranda and watch tanagers and hummingbirds or take a walk to the waterfalls in search of a motmot or owl. Close by are also such well known birding areas as La Mesa and Alta Maria.

New Cam Species: Variable Seedeater – March 10, 2019
A Variable Seedeater dropped by to investigate the platform! As the name suggests this species' appearance varies by geographic location (mainly male appearance). Their diet is comprised mostly of seeds and they favor open habitats such as fields and pastures.

Panama Waterfall Adventure
Panama isn't known for waterfalls. Meanwhile on a journey to the mountain town of Volcan and in route to Volcano Baru, the country's largest volcano, we stumbled up a small cascade near the road. The cascade was tucked into a deep canyon, seemingly inaccessible by foot.
I had an idea: if we jumped off the 1st waterfall, we'd gain access to the canyon that was teeming with waterfalls, swimming holes and stunning scenery. Fortunately, I convinced Carlos Luis Atencion El Gato to go with me. We dove our way in and climbed back out and were granted a tremendous experience that most people only see from the highway bridge!
